Yesterday afternoon a shady nook on
St. Clair street was the scene of a little
fracas, which caused considerable stir in
tho neighborhood. Maier Dorn, the cigar
maker, had somo difficulty with a boy
named Eli Howard, who is about fifteen
years of age. Eli is said to have drawn
his knife on his antagonist, and at this
juncture Maier caught the boy with a firm
grasp and blew a little whistle with all his
might until Policeman Brady appeared on
tho scene. Tills officer took Eli in charge
and marched him off to the gloomy apart
ments of the Guard House. As he went
he was followed by the gaze of a crowd of
darkies and youngsters, In whose hearts
Eli's daring bravery had awakened tho
strongest sympathy.

Muscogee Operatives Pass a Galt Day.
Glorlon* fan and a Good Time for .ill !
Yeflterday morning at seven o'clock, tho
pio-nlc train of the operatives of tho Mus
cogee mills left the Oglethorpe street de
pot for Klngsboro, on the North and South
road. About four hundrod people woro on
Iniard, and after a pleasant trip of an hour
and a quarter, thoy reached their destina
tion. On reaching tho depot a proces
sion was formed and tho happy party
wended Its way to tho pic-nic grounds.
Hero was found a large platform, about
40x50 feet, and planed as smooth us any
floor. Boon Georgo Williams’ string band
struck up its strains, and fifty happy peo
ple launched out on to the festive social
board. The dancing continued from this
time until one o’clock. After hard climb
ing, two fine swings were suspended from
huge oaks, and fun of another kind was
furnished. At one o’clock dinner was had;
baskets wero opened under the shade all
around, and a royal feast enjoyed by all.
Everybody hud an invitation to dinner,
and there was enough offered for the en
joymont of the crowd to feed twice the j
number.
After dinner, dancing was resumed, and
foot and sack races attracted considerable
attention. The races were the source of
groat amusement. All kinds of sports were
engaged in by children, and everybody
seemed to adopt some way to enjoy tho
day.
The dancing was kept up, continuously,
until 5 o’clock.
About 4:30 a very refreshing little
shower fell on the grounds and made the
atmosphere fresh, while it completely
laid the dust.
At half past flvo the dances ceased, and
the crowd repaired to the depot. The
train left at 6: 20 and reached the city in
an hour and a half.
During the whole day nothing unpleas
ant occurred. Tho pic-nic was well con
ducted and the thanks of all present are
due to Mr. Van Cook and the other man
agers of the affair. Their kind attention
to tho employees of the Times office
wero most thankfully received.
During the day, lemonade and ice-water
were distributed to all free of charge.
Hundreds of gallons of water were used
from the splendid well near tho grounds.
A large number of people, from Hamil
ton and Harris county were present, and
onjoyed tho day’s proceedings. The whole
crowd could not have been less than eight
hundred.
There was a target practice, by ladles
and gentlemen, at various times during
the day, a lady shot against a member
of the Columbus Guards, with his own
pistol, and centred the cross.
On a second trial, she shot with the press
man of the Times, and with his own pis
tol, a large English Cavalry one with
out rest, at a distance of eighty feet, she
placed three balls within a circumference
of an inch in diameter, thus beating
one of the crack shots of the city. She is
a fine marksman. This is her first pistol
practice.
The whole party came back in high glee,
anti many wished for another plc-nie of
the same kind very soon.
THANKS.
Wesley Ferguson, tho clever engineer,
will accept thanks for his courtesies and
kind attention. On the return he al
lowed us the luxury of a ride on the
“cow-catcher;” also, Messrs. Forbe and
Cicero Buchanan, John Hardis, Absalom
O. Young, Zeno Pickett, W. 8. McMichael,
Wm. Turnage, John Wiley Rontfroe; and
numerous ladies, for favors rendered.
The operatives request us to return
thanks to the Secretary and Treasurer,
Willie Swift, Esq., for his magnanimity in
the getting up and furnishing pecuniary
means, without limit, for this (to them)
bountiful feast. This, we believe, is a
“failing” of that family. A “good ” one,
say we!
Wo had almost forgotten to mention the
rarest treat, to us, of the occasion. The
songs, at our request, by little Emma,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Van Cook, aged
two years, excelled all efforts, age consid
ered, ever listened to by an admirer of
vocal music. The old Scotch ballad
“Jamie, dear Jamie,
I do love you, so, etc.”
would havo done credit to one in her
“’fecA.” She undoubtedly exhibits tal
ents for vocal music, unexcelled, and, on
hearing onco repeated, any song, sings to
a syllable, and correctly, any numlHir of
lines or measure. Long may sin* live to
bless father and mother.
An individual, of Celtic blood, who feign
ed drunkenness, by repeated insults to
gentlemen, seemingly invited a “ killing;”
we are pleased to state that in this ease,
“forlwuiranoe did not cease to be a virtue.”

Yesterday was remarkable, principally
j for its heat. It was probably tho warm
jest day of tho year. Yesterday after
, noon, tho thermometer at Pease A Nor
j man’s book store stood at 88 degrees in
the shade. This is unusual heat for May,
and if it Increases in a regular proport ion
until August, wo may expect very little
comfort. Umbrellas, straw hats and
linen coats have already boon hauled out.
Palm leaf fans are in glorious popularity,
and everything is putting on the quiet
appearencc of summer, but matters have
so changed that comfort is now in pro
portion to tho thinness of one’s dress.
We will soon get used to it, and will
either be indifferent to the effects of heat,
or, like heroes, “sweat and liear it.”

Yesterday our friend Mr. Jeff Worsham
called us out to his wagon to pick for our
solves, a basket of strawberries. Surely
we never saw before such lucious berries.
They are of the Lillie varlty, and every
one in the basket, we selected, was half as
large as a guinea egg. Ho brought in
that morning five bushels, and readily
sold them out. He has two acres in straw
berries and can supply tho town. He has
quit merchandizing, and shows himself to
be an adopt in “garden farming,” to as
great an extent as ho tfus the clever mer

so rare “ under tho sun.” We had asked
this man if he had any news to give us ;
he replied in the negative, when wo asked
him how we were to get up a paper on
such a dull day. llis reply was full of

which completely won us over|to him.

WITHOUT A PARALLEL.
The demand for Dr. J. Bradfield’s Fe
male Regulator is beyond precedent in
the annals of popular remedies. Orders
come in so thick and fast that the Propri
etor has, heretofore been unable to fill
them all. He is happy to state that ar
rangements are now complete by which i
he is prepared to manufacture Female j
Regulator on a scale equal to the emer- j
genev, and the public may feel assured J
that their wants may now be supplied.!
Physicians of high repute are using this I
great remedy, in daily practice, all over \
Georgia. Hereafter no woman need suf
fer from suppressed, suspended or irreg
ular menstruation. This valuable medi
cine is prepared by L. H. Brad field, Drug
gist. Atlanta, Ga., and sold at $1.50 per j
bottle by druggists throughout America.
HEARTY, BLOOMING WIDOW.
Marietta, Ga., March 9,1870.
Messrs. Bradjleld <k Cb.:
Gentlemen—You will please ship us an
other supply of your invaluable Female
Regulator, and forward bill by mail. We
are happy to state that this remedy gives
better satisfaction than any article we
sell. We have been selling it since 1868,
and witnessed many remarkable cures by
it. Among others, there was a lady
friend of ours who was sallow and sickly
until she was twenty-six years old, when
she was married. Iter i. -band lived two
years and died. She continued in bad
health; in fact, she has never been what
a woman ought to be. A few months
after the death of her husband she saw
your advertisement, and came to our
store and bought a bottle of your Regula
tor from us, and took it according to di
rections. It has cured her srtuiid and
well, brought her regular monthly peri
ods on, and to-day she is a hearty, bloom
ing widow—with the use of but'two bot
tles of your Regulator, costing her only
three dollars, when she had tried several
physicians and spent a great deal of
money without any benefit. Wishing you
great success with your valuable reme
dies, we are, respectfully yours, etc.,
W. Root <fc Sons.
