G, Wilhelm, wc learn that the fem le who sported herself around last winter as the famous Belle Boyd, is now in Opelika. She delivered one of her matchless lectures in that city Monday night, announcing beforehand that noth ing would bo charged for admission. Af ter her mellow voice had died away, she took up a collection, and the crowd attest ed the quality of Its generous apprecia tion, by donating her about three dollars and a half. Sho seems to be much dis gusted with the reception sho has receiv ed everywhere, and is convinced that the gallant chivalry of years ago has gone. As the public happens to know that the original reckless Belle Boyd Is now living a quiet life and rocking an infant cradle In some town In New York, this shadow of the famous original ought not to expect an ovation on all sides. Wo wish tho poor woman would quit her foolishness, or, if she likes tho business, would adopt some branch of it which would pay her better than tho one on which she now suspends her queenly hopes. Broad street is ornamented by a row of trees in its center, which are pretty and which add a great deal to the appearance of the city. Tho trees are In a flourishing state of growth. Their appearance is greatly injured by the shabby boxes which enclose most of thorn. Two or three old broken planks put around them both for protection and ornament, have ceased to bo either, and glvo to tho street a rather neglected appearance. Much ef the simple beauty of the trees is destroyed by these rough and broken boxes. They would look much better without any. It would not cost much to enclose all the trees with neat, boxes, and the effect it would have on the general apimaranco of tllo street would bo very marked. If the city cannot afford to do this, it can surely afford to have tho present rough and broken tsixes put together and white washed, so as to look neat and respecta ble. Strangers coming to the city judge by wtiat they see around them of tho gen eral character of tho place, and it is a matter of no little importance that tile principal street in Columbus--tho one whieh everybody who come here sees— should be neat and well kept. A small out lay will remedy the defect of which wo have just spoken, and there is no reason wily itshould not be attended to at once. New Ties and Hamburg Edgings. Mnlciil Soiree. It Is reported that Madame Baiiini, as sisted by her pupils and a number of la dies and gentlemen of the city, will soon givo a musical soiree and a dramatic en tertainment at the residence of Mr. James Cook in a week or two. Preparatory to this Madame Baiiini is now having a series of rehersals, which are attended by all who intend to take part in tho soiree. The dramatic entertain ment will consist of short plays, which will be rendered by tho araatetures of this, among whom, we are assured there is a considerable amount of talent. The entertainment will be the most pleasant of the season, and will furnish both a rich musical treat and an abun dance of amusement. Jewelry repaired and made to order. It will be remomberod that, some time since, a motion was raado before the Chan cellor at Montgomery, on tho part of tho Branch Sons and others, to be made par ties to tho sale of the Western Railroad and to have tho samo set aside. Almut tho same time a similar motion was made by Gen. Toombs, as attorney for G. P. Cozart and others, before Judge Gibson, of Au gusta. The latter motion afTeeted only the part of the transaction had by tho Georgia Railroad. Tho Montgomery Advert inn- of yesterday says that tho following disposi tion was made of the former motion: “The Chaneellor, on yesterday, denied and overruhsl the motion of Branch Sons and others to bo made parties to proew*<i ings for sale of the Western Railroad and have tho sale set aside. Ho said that any right they had could be assert**! quite as well as in a separate bill, and lie would not delay the proceeding by entertaining their petition. The confirmation of tho sale, we judge bv this decision, is a fixed fact. “The Court also dismissed, on motion of the Attorney General, the hill filed by the South V North Alabama Railroad Compa ny against the State to eall it to an ac count for the three per cent, fund, holding that the late act forbidding suits against the State applied as well to this case as to others. Tho case goes to the Supreme Court." Tho injunction was also refusal by Judge Gibson, and the Directors of the Georgia Road were authorized to proceed with and perfect the purchase of the West ern Road. These two decisions settle the matter of making ncw T parties to the sale, or in any way delaying it, and it is probable that the road will pass into the hands of the new ownership very soon. PKTEKhBtiuo, Va., Jan. 20th, 1875. John L. Jordan, Esq. -Dear Kir: Ho well pleased am I with your Joyous Julep, that I hereby tes tily to the sup* rior merit of your unequaled preparation for Neuralgia. I shall esteem my self happy should even one of that worst of all classes of sufferers be led through me to take the Julep. My wife has for ten (10) years been a mar tyr to the most malignant ami persistent neural gic torture, without being able to find auy relief except from your preparation. Sho was relieved by the second dose as per directions, and has not had a return of it for two months. To some 1 may see in strangely sanguine about your medi cine, but I have a right to be so. It is not rea sonable to suppose tuis malignant malady would have died of sheer exhaustion of capacity for sustaining itself, and that too in a minute, and tho very minute your medicine was taken. If so. it is a most remarkable, simple coincidence, aud I prefer giving the credit in your favor of the best testimony man can ever have—experience. Vary truly yours. JAMES T. TOSH. fihLUXSUS, January 16,1875. Mr.Jordan: ~ l take great pleasure in recom mending your Joyous Julep for neuralgia, lias produced a most wonderful relict in one oi the severest attacks of neuralgia my daughter '•ver has had. Khe has been treated for it by three skillful physicians, with very little benefit, and used all th.* usual remedies with little suc cess I can with much confidence hope for a per manent cure. It is only two clave since we began | the use. of it. and it is apparently of permanent j benefit. Yours, with respect, MRS. L. I. NORMAN. JOII.V 1.. JOlllllV, l potlii'can. Printed from now type, and illus trated with Several Thousand Engravings and Maps. Tin work originally published under tho title of Tut: Nkw Amluioan Cyclovjuhu was com pleted in 1863, since which time the wide circula tion which it has attained in all parts of the United States, aud the signal developments which have taken place in every brauch of science, lit erature aud art, have induced the editors ami publishers to submit it to an exact and thorough revision, aud to ishuc anew edition entitled The Am eiucan Cyclop.edu. Within the last ten years the progress of dis covery iu every department of knowledge has made anew work ol reference an imperative ; want. The movement of political affairs has kept pace with the discoveries of science, and their lruittul application to the industrial aud useful arts aud the convenience aud refinement of social life. Great wars aud consequent revolutions have oc curred. involving national changes of peculiar moment. Tho civil war of our own country, which was at its height when the last volume ot the old work appeared, has happily been ended, and anew course of commercial and industrial activity has been commenced. Large accessions to our geographical knowl edge have been made by the indefatigable ex plorers of Africa. The great political revolutions of the last de cade, with the natural result ot the lapse of time, have brought into public view a multitude ol new men, whose names are in every one’s mouth, aud of whose lives every one is curious to know the particulars. Gr< at battles have been fought and i important sieges maintained, ol which the de tails are as yet preserved only in the newspapers i>r iu the transient publications of the day, but , which ought now to take their place in perma nent and authentic history. Iu preparing the present edition for the press, it has accordingly been the aim of the editors to bring down the information to the latest possi ile dates, and to furnish an accurate account of the most recent discoveries in science, of every fresh production iu literature, aud of the newest inventions in the practical arts.>as well as to give | a succinct and original record of the progress of political aud historical events. The work has been begun after long and care mi preliminary labor, aud with the most ample, resources for carrying it on to a successful term ination. None of the original stereotype plates have been used, but every page has been printed ou new type, forming in tact anew Cyclopaedia, with the same plan and compass as its predecessor, but with a far greater pecuniary expenditure, aud with such improvements in its composition as have been suggested by longer experience aud j enlarged knowledge. I The illustrations which aro introduced for the j first time iu the present edition have been added u 't for tho sake of pictorial effect, but to give I greater lucidity and force to the explanations iu , tne text. They embrace all branches of science aud of natural history, and depict the most larnous and remarkable features of scenery, architecture and art, as well an the, various pro cesses ot mechanics and manufactures. Although intended fur instruction rather than entbelishuieut, no pains have been spared to in sure their artistic excellence; the cost of their execution is enormous, aud it is believed they will find a welcome reception as an admirable feature ot the Cyclopaedia, and worthy of its high character. This work is sold to Subscribers only, payable on delivery of each volume. It will be completed iu sixteen largo octavo volumes, each containing about 800 pages, lully illustrated with several thousand Wood Engravings, and with numerous colored Lithographic Maps.
