Hendln. Boom und I.lbrnrl,
Wo understand that the Young Men’s
Christian Association of this city Intends
to establish a reading room aud library
for the beuellt of its members and all who
feel a desire to enjoy its privileges. This
Is a good move aud should bo carried out.
Thobeginning must necessarily bo small,
as the Association Is young and lias the
command of very little funds. If the at
tempt Is made with a will to succeed, and
made In the proper W|y, tho desired end
may be attained.
Of tho advantages of a public library
and reading room, it Is unnecessary to
speak. All who thfcik for a momont can
sec the almost incalculable good to be ac
complished by such institutions. Every
city should have ono, and the maintenance
and prosperity of such an enterprise Is an !
honor to any community.
A library undor tho control of a Christian
association would bo specially beneficial.
It would contain the purest aud best liter
ature and bo kept free from tho polluting
lnliuences of sensational publications
whose morals are even worso than their
literary merit.
It would be amusing and instructive if
somebody capable of the task would in
form the public what per cent, of tho pub
lications which are pouring upon the
country in an unbroken stream, is worthy
the notice of a sensible man.
If our Young Men’s Christian Associa
tion receive the aid and encouragement
which will insure the success of their plan,
we have no doubt but that the institution
thus established will not only be produc
tive of good, but that it will continue to
improve, increasing its facilities and at
tractions until It becomes one of tho fix
tures of the etty and a source of public
benefit which will receive the help of all
disposed to aid In the Improvement of tho
city.
The young men engaged in the endeavor
are hopeful of success, though they have
nothing to start from. Conscious that they
are engaged in a good work, they are de
termined to make a strong, manly effort
to attain their desired end. They propose
to go to work at once. Tho beginning will
be small. May It lead on to a complete
success.

May 15, 1875;
Editor Itailu Timm:
For tho information of many enquiring
friends, asking why I was dropped from
the police force, you will do me the kind
ness to make this statement: On the 26th
day of May last I received a notice from
His Honor, tho Mayor, to this effect;
Mr. John St. Clair:
Draii Sib The Mayor and Folleo Com
mittee, at a meeting held on tho 20th, de
termined to reduce the number of police
on the Ist. You will, therefore, bo sus
pended from that date.
Very respectfully,
John Mcllhenny, Mayor.
No charge having been assigned in any
manner against me as an officer, I am un
able to answer. Bespectfully,
John St. Clair.
The above was handed us by Mr. St.
Clair, with a request that it be published.
We very willingly consented, for we con
sider that every man, however humble,
has a right to t>o hoard in defence of him
self, anti so long as we own and control a
public journal, all sides shall have a fair
hearing through our columns. Wo are
never in favor of the “gag” rule, and our
columns will never lie closed against a
gentleman desiring to make a statement.
Mr. 8t Clair, we presume, lias been dis
charged in tho discretion of the Mayor,
and that discretion we do not question. It
is generally talked of, however, that some
others, who have violated the police regu
lations, might have been better spared
than Mr. St. Clair, who for nine years has
served the city without a charge ever hav
ing been brought against him, either for
derilection of duty or abuse of power.
Tliis much can bo said to his credit, and
ho retires with tho good wishes of nearly
every citizen. Another tiling that recom
mends him to us all is, that he was.a good
Confederate soldier, and, though a North
ern man, showed his devotion to our cause
by going with our army into Pennsylva
nia, and within three miles of his family,
whom he had not soon for four years, yet
came away without leaving his post for
an hour. That was a trying time. How
many could have stood it?

River Freights.
Our river freights are very light at
present. The merchants do not seem to |
be sending many goods down the river, |
and the city is receiving very little from
that source. Cotton has almost ceased to
come. At present the Jnlia St. Clair is the
only boat on tho river. She makes her
trips weekly. The Farley is receiving a
general repairing and anew coat of paint,
which will improve her appearance con
siderably. Tho Wylly has been tied up.
One boat is able to carry all the freight
and tho stray passengers that corne along
occasionally.
Rending dub.
There is some talk of organizing a read
ing club among the young folks for amuse
ment during the summer. Such a dub
would be the source of much pleasure and
profit, aud would be especially pleasant at
this season of the year. It seems that
very few of our people are going away
this summer, and there would be no
scarcity of material for a dub of any size.
People are either too poor to go to sum
mer resorts or do not feel inclined to do
so, and therefore the city is apt to be full
all during the hot months.

Tom Glover.
Yesterday morning the case of Tom Glov
er who shot Lewis Thomas, on Tuesday j
night and shot at two or three other no- j
groes was presented to the Grand Jury, j
They found throe true bills against Tom,
two for assault with intent to murder, and
one for carrying concealed weapons.
Judge Johnson fixed the prisoner’s bond
at SI,OOO which he gave and was accord
ingly released. His bond is amply strong.
A rather bad case was made out against
Tom, but he is confident of coming out all
right at his trial. Ho says the negroes
were crowding around him, aYid one or
two of them had drawn bricks to knock
him down, when lie fired, and his enemies
scattered. He claims that he shot purely
in self defense. Several other darkies tell
very different tales, and make matters
look very grave for Tom. Ile will be tried
in a week or two.
Lewis Thomas, the wounded negro is
not very badly hurt. The ball only made
a flesh wound, and he will soon recover.

New Revised Edition.
Entirely rewritten by the ablest writers on every
subject. Printed from new typo, au<l illus
trated with Several Thousand Engravings
•nd Maps.
The work originally published under tlie title
of The New American Ctclofjbdu was com
pleted iu IHII3. Biuop which time the wide circula
tion which it has attained iu all parts of the
United States, and the signal developments which
have taken place tn every branch of science, lit
erature and art, have induced the editors and
publishers to submit it to an exact and thorough
revision, and to issue a now edition ewtttlod The
a.mkrican Otclopjidia.
Within tho hint ten years the progress of dis
covery in every department of knowisdgt h
made s new work of reference ao imperative
want.
The movement Of political affairs hus kept pace
with the discoveries of science, aud thakr lroittul
application to the industrial ami useful arts aud
the convenience and refinement of social life.
Airest wars und consequent revolutions have oc
curred, involving national changes of peculiar
moment. The civil war of our own country,
which was at Its height when the lent volume of
the old work appear- and, has happily been ended,
and anew course commercial and industrial
activity has been commenced.
Large accessions to our geographical knowl
edge have been made by the indefatigable ex
plorers of Africa.
The great political revolutions of the last de
cade, with the natural nsuL of the lapse of time,
bare brought into public view a multitude of new
mea, whoso names are in every one’s mouth, and
of whose lives every one is curious to know the
particulars. Great battles have been fought and
important sieges maintained, of which tb** de
tails arc as yet preserved only iu tuc newspapers
or in the transient publications of the day, but
‘which ought now to take their place in perma
nent and authentic history.
In preparing the present edition f"r the press,
it has accordingly been the' aim <>l the editors to
bring down the information to tho latest possi
ble dates, aud to furnish an accurate account of
the most recent discoveries in science,of every
fresh production in literature, aud of the newest
inventions iu the practical arts, as well as to give
a succinct ami original record of the progress of
political and historical events.
The work has been begun alter long aud care
ful preliminary labor, aud with the moat ample
resources for carrying it on to a successful term
ination.
None of the original stereotype . plates have
been used, but every page has been printed on
new type, forming iu fact anew Cyclopedia, with
the same plan aud compass as its predecessor,
but with a Ar greater pecuniary expenditure,
and with such improvements in its composition
as have been suggested by longer experience and
enlarged knowledge.
The illustrations which aro introduced for the
i first time in the present e4iitiou have been added
I not for the sake of pictorial effect, but to give
i greater lucidity aud force to the explanations in
I the text. They embrace all branches of science
j aud of natural history, and depict tho most
! famous aud remarkable features of scenery,
i architecture aud art, as well as the various pro-
I cesses of mechanics and manufactures.
I Although intended for instruction rather than
: e(abolishment, uo pains nave been spared to in
jure their artistic excellence; the cost of their
j execution is enormous, and it is believed they
i will find a welcome reception as an admirable
! feature of tho Cyclopaedia, and worthy of its
high character.
This work is sold to Subscribers only, payable

Jordan’s Joyous Julep.
A Specific for Neuralgia.
TESTIMONIALS.
Petersiu ro, Va., Jan. 'JOth, 1875.
John L. Jordan. Esq.—Dear Sir: So well pleased
am I with your Joyous Julep, that I hereby tes
tify to the superior merit of your unequaled
preparation tor Neuralgia. I shall esteem my
self happy should even bne of that worst of all
classes *-( sufferers be led through me to take the
Julep. My wife has for ten (10) years been a mar
tyr to the most malignant aud persistent neural
gic torture, without lM>ing able to find any relief
except from your preparation. She was relieved
by th second done as per directions, and has uot
hail a return of it for two months. To some I
! may seem strangely sanguine about your medi
cine, but 1 have a right to be so. It is not rea
sonable to suppose this malignant malady would
have died i>t sheer exhaustion of capacity for
sustaining itself, and that too in a minute, and
the very minute your medicine was taken. If so.
it is a most remarkable, simple coincidence, and
I prefer giving tho credit in your favor of the
I best testimony man can ever have—experience.
Vary truly yours,
JAMES T. TOSH.
Columbus, January 16,1875.
; Mr.Jordan:—l take great pleasure in recoin*
mending your Joyous Julep for neuralgia,
lias produced a most wonderful relief iu one oi
the severest attacks of neuralgia my daughter
I ever has bad. She has been treated for It by
j three skillful physicians, with very little benefit,
aud used all the usual remedies with little suc
-1 ccaa. I can with much conhdcuua hope for a per
! manent cure. It is only two days since we began
I the use of it. and it is apparently of permanent
j benefit. Yours, with respect.

The demand for Dr. J. Brad field’s Fe

the annals of popular remedies. Orders

he is prepared to manufacture Female
Regulator on a scale equal to the emer

that their wants may now ie supplied.
Physicians of high repute are using this
great remedy, in daily practice, all over

! Gentlemen—You will please ship us an
! other supply of your h; valuable Female
I Regulator,.and forward bill by mail. Wo
! are happy to state that this remedy gives
! better satisfaction than any article we
sell. We have been selling it since 1808,
and witnessed many remarkable cures by
it. Among others, there was a lady
friend of ours who was sallow and sickly
until she was twenty-six years old, when
! she was married. Her husband lived two
1 j vears and died. She continued in bad
’ 1 health; in fact, she has never boon what
j a woman ought to be. A few months
j after the death of her husband she saw
i your advertisement, and came to our
i store and bought a bottle of your Regula
tor from us, and took it according todi-
I rectaons. It has cured her sound and
j well, brought her regular monthly peri-
I ods on, and to-day she is a hearty, bloom
ing widow—with the use of but two bot
tles of vour Regulator, costing her only
three dollars, when she had tried several
physicians and spent a great deal of
J money without any benefit. Wishing you
j great success with your valuable reme
! dies, we are, respectfully yours, etc.,
