The University now consists of flvo De partments, viz: Academic Department, Shite College Department, Law Depart ment, Medical Department, Medical Col : lege of Goorgla, situated at Augusta, and j the North Georgia Agricultural College, j situated at Dahloncga. Tho attendance ; | upon the various schools is good, and ag- j gregates 229 students. They are divided as follows: Georgia, 218; Alabama, 8; I Florida, 2; Texas, 2; British Honduras, 2. | Columbus has only one representative, ! Carlyle Terry. The examination questions are Incorporated in tho catalogue, nnd most of thorn arc very difficult. A consul ♦•ruble degree of proficiency would be ne-: oessarry to answer them all. THE JUDGE OVERRULES THE CLERK. Yesterday Judge Johnson decided an important legal point in the matter of the publication of interlocutory orders. > During the day several orders were taken 5 to perfect service by publication. The first i order was drawn up reciting the facts, ' and concluding with tho usual form, to wit, naming tho newspaper in which it should bo published. It happened that the Daily Times was mentioned, and when tho order was handed to the Clerk, Maj. J. J. Brad ford, he claimed that he had the right to select the paper. The point was then made to the Court, and the Court very properly and legally decided that when tho matter pertained to the office of the Clerk, he had the right to select his paper; but where tho Plaintiff, or his Attorney, were concerned, they could select their paper in their discretion and the Judge instructed Maj. Bradford accordingly. Judge Johnson remarked that it was an important matter. As the decision has thus been made, we would call the attention of all parties hav ing business in that line, to said decision, trusting that whenever they see proper to give their legal advertising to us, they will do so. We assure them that all such favors will be thankfully received. The Times has a wide and steadily increasing circuiat ion. I*i*ut*. Glrnii'o Exhibition. Prof. G. It. Glenn lias changed the time for his school exhibition from the 24th to the 17th—next Wednesday night week. The programme of the entertainment is varied and complete and will afford a rare treat. Several things not usually seen at school exhibitions art* on the programme. The Opera House will doubtless be filled with a fine audience. Prof. Glenn has obtained a deserved popularity in this city, and his many friends will all bo present at his exhibi tion. He has one of the finest schools ever known in Columbus, and his pupils ought to be happy in the possession of one of the best of teachers. Bridal Presents of Solid Silver and Silver-Plated Ware. Anew assortment: just received at V/rmcir A* Ktvskt/s. I)i*<* • In Church. If wo do say it, it is nevertheless true, that Columbus ladles are noted for their stylo and taste. In making this asser tion, wo merely echo tho opinions of all who have visited tho city, and hope it will not be deemed anything like the tendency ! of some of our exchanges, who seo no iru ■ perfections within the corporate limits of | the places where they are published, and who never tire of informing the world of I this fact. ' Nowhere is the taste of our ladies better displayed than at church. Here they give tho best evidences, not only of sound dis cretion in dress, but also of common sense. Tho pulpit all over tho land has resounded with denunciations of tho folly and ex travagance of modern fashion. There Ims j been much cause for this “holy wrath.” j Home of the fashions that have been popu- ■ : lar throughout tho land during the past two years are laughable; others are ex-, cocdingly distasteful, and gome would not be too severely characterized if they were called disgusting. From all these extremes, we are happy j Ito say, our ladies have kept free. They' I have been guided by the refined tastes of! Southern women, and that which might | seem admirable to those reared under a different dispensation, and with different views of womanly modesty, has appjarod exceedingly objectionable to them, and, therefore, has boon most strictly proscrib-, ed. The distinctive features of Southern 1 women have not yet disappeared, and it is to be hoped they never will. Of nothing; ought we to be more proud, for nothing re fleets more honor upon our land. Since (hey have retained these distinctive char acteristics, it Ims been impossible for them to run into the follies and imprudencies which have made tho females in some j parts of the country the objects of such terrible satire and generous ridicule. Columbus is particular fortunate. Her ladies have fully kept up with tho innova tions of laudable fashion, and have avoid- 1 ed the excesses which would entirely change the character of those fashions. As we said before, nowhere do they give letter evidence of their superiority than ! In their dress at church. We seldom sec that gaudy display in tho temple of wor-j ship which would be appropriate at an op era. There is no effort at show; no at tempt to dazzle and attract tho attention j of admiring congregations by sweeping up the aisle arrayed in colors that shame the rainbow, and in feathers that would j make, the peacock jealous. Our church j congregations will compare favorably in point of elegance with any in tho State,, but wo are all proud that they are not j characterized by that llashincss which is the sure index of shoddyism or senseless vanity. There are places for gay dresses. In a ball-room they are proper. There they may flash just as much as the wearer may please. Churches are not the places for su#h displays. Good taste condemns such gaudiness, and the opinions of our • best people are firmly set against it. Tho ladies of Columbus should be con gratulated on their admirable taste and the soberness of their dress in church, which is an evidence* of elegance, refine ment and true womanly grace. Apparently the ladies who listen to the sermons of the Rev. Mr. Talrnage have not learned that black is the most fashion able color for church wear, for lie declares that: There seems to bo in the churches a great strife raging. It is an Austerlitz of j ribbons. The carnage of color is seen all over our religious assemblages. Along on the outskirts of tho Sabbath audiences you sen here and there a picket of fashion, but down in the middle of the church are the solid columns blazing away through the service. Five hundred “broken and con trite hearts,’’ covered up in rainbows ami spangles. Followers of the “meek and lowly Nazarene” all a-jingle and a-fiash. Furthermore, he says: We want a great ecclesiastical reformation in this matter of Sabbath accoutrement. Shoo these re ligious peacocks out of the house >f God. By your example make subdued and mod est costume more popular than gaudy ap parel. Do not put so much dry goods on your lmek that you cannot climb into glory. You cannot sail into the harbor of Heaven with such a rigging os that. They would level their guns at you as being a blockade-runner. Coming up to tho celes tial door, the gate-keeper would cry, “Halt! you cannot go in with such regi mentals.” And as you answered, “I got those? jewels from Tiffany and that dress from Arnold and Constable, and those shoes from Burt’s,” tho gatekeeper would say to ono of the attendants: “Take this soul down to one of the out-houses, and tear off t host? puffs and ruffles and knife i plaitings and Hamburg embroideries, and put on her more appropriate Sunday at tire; for, going in as she now is, all Hen | von would burst out a-laughing!’’ Ex'Ui‘ftlon to KliiK^boru. Brad fir* Id’s Fe male Regulator is beyond precedent in tiie annals of popular remedies. Orders come in so thick and last that the Propri ! etor has, heretofore been unable to till them all. He is happy to state that ar rangements are now complete by which lie is prepared to manufacture Female Regulator on a scale equal to the emer gency, and the public may feel assured that their wants may now in? supplied. Physicians of high repute are using’ this great remedy, in daily practice, all over Georgia. Hereafter no woman noed suf fer from suppressed, suspended <>r irreg ular menstruat ion. This valuable medi cine is prepared by L. H. Bradfield, Drug gist, Atlanta, Ga., and sold at $1.50 per bottle by druggists throughout America. HEARTY, BLOOMING WIDOW. Marietta, Ga., March 0, 1870. Mejutr*. Bradfield A' On.: Gentlemen—You will please ship us an other supply of your invaluable Female. Regulator, and forward bill by mail. We are happy to state that this remedy gives better* satisfaction than any .article we sell. We have been selling it since 1868, and witnessed many remarkable cures by it. Among others, there was a lady friend of ours who was sallow and sickly until she was twenty-six years old, when she was married. Her husband lived two years and died. Sin? continued in bad health; in fact, she has never txß*n what a woman ought to be. A few months after tin? death of her husband she saw your advertisement, and came to our store and bought a bottle of your Regula-; tor from us, and took it according to di rections. It has cured her sound and well, brought her regular monthly peri-; ods on. and to-day she is a hearty, bloom ing widow—with the use of but two bot tles of your Regulator, costing her only three dollars, when she had tried several physicians and spent a great deal of money without any benefit. Wishing you great success with your valuable rente- ■ dies, we are, respectfully yours, etc., W. Root A Sons. ap23 3m UKAIJ : ueaoTT'l <°\** *'*TlO\ < | it,... | OSFK'E OF O.
