He was doorkeeper of the House of Representatives and of the Senate for several terms. —At the nominating convention for the 33d Senatorial District, composed of the counties of Henry, Dale, Coffee and Geneva, held at Ozark on the Bth iust. Col. Wm. C. Oates, of Honry.was nominated hy acclamation as a can didate to represent that District in the Constitutional Convention. The exercises of the coming Ala- j bama Teachers’ Convention, in Mo bile, promise to be unusually inter esting. Hon. John M. McLeroy delivers an address; Dr. Carlos G. Smith, Prof. Thornton, of Howard College. Profs. Larabee, Goodhue, Wills, Walker, and other able teach ers have promised papers. Rev. A. J. New Y’ouk, June 11. Tho Vicks burg was a screw steamer, and be longed to tho Liverpool .V Mississippi Steamship Company, of Liverpool. During the winter she usual I y plietl between New Orleans aud Liverpool. New York, June 11. Nothing new to-day regarding the loss of the steamer Vicksburg, froui Montreal to Quebec, by a collision with icebergs. There are but faint hopes entertained of ever hearing from tho second and third boats that left the 111-fated steamer, and the probabilities are that all on hoard, eighty-three in number, perished, excepting tho five seamen rescued by the steamer State of Georgia. New York, June 11. Survivors of the Vicksburg wreck state that after 1 boat No. 1 was launched with five I persons, the second officer's boat was ; lowered, with nine persons iu it, and pulled off to windward, ('apt. Ben nett signalled to the first boat to come back and take more persons on board, but they could not return, as the ice had drifted between them and the ship. Only fifteen persons had left the ship, when someone in the boateried “There she goes!” and the Vicksburg disappeared, head fore most. As she sank, a boat in charge of the second officer, and containing thirty men, was floated from the j decks. All Ihe women and children went down in the vessel, not one | having been taken off. After the ship sunk nothing was visible except ; bales of hay ami lumber. One man, supposed to be the captain, was seen on a bale of hay, but they could not ! reach him for tho Ice. One seaman i says that the captain was terribly j ex cited before the vessel sunk, and ordered the men, pointing a, pistol at them, to jump into tlio boats. Tho rescued sailors are totally ignorant as to the names of the passengers. There were thirty-two in all. Saloon I passengers were Mr. MeShane of Montreal, Miss Sutherland of New j York, A. H. Betts of Kingston, Mr. ! and Mrs. Bloom and Rev. ('. A. Ad janis of Upper Canada, and Mr. Vi j pond. The vessel was valued at, $325,- noO; fully insured. Cargo was worth j $85,000. ■ ♦ . Ballison, Senator, from lowa, has been appointed Chairman of the Commission, to negotiate with the Sioux, in relation to the Black Hills and other mineral lands. District-Attorney Bliss, of Now York, arrived here this morn ing, to look into the charges preferred against him by one Walter Gibson, of New York. These charges wore sent to tho President, at Long Branch, and forwarded thence to the Attorney-General for examination. They will be examined to-day or to morrow. No selection lias yet been made of a First Assistant Attorney-General. The position, It Is expected, will ho tilled by tho Ist inst. National Bank notes received for redemption to-day $805,850. Omaha, Neb., June ll.—A large war party of Sioux, Cheyennes and Apa ches, coming from the north hy the Sweetwater river, entered Rock creek valley between Forts Steele and San ders, Wyoming Territory, on the sth inst., where they attacked tho settlers and ran off over four hundred horses, taking them north, crossing the rail- j road at Horse Shoe bend. The loss falls heavily upon the farmers who wore putting in their crops. This is the second or third raid of this character mode this Spring. The Indians evidently in tend to own all the horses iri the country. For once they get them in side the lines of their reservation, it will be a rare occurence if they ever see them again. —The members of a prominent auc tion firm in New York have been in dicted for concealing silks to the value of $1,006,000. They provide that breaches of contracts calculated to cause public injury by working people employed in a public capacity, as in the supply of gas and water, shall bo dealt with criminally. All other cases shall be regarded purely as matters of civil contracts, to be settled by tho County Courts. The law against pickettlng to continue in forco; defendants, how ever, are to have option of trial by a justice of the peace or a jury ; In re gard to strikes, there was no agree ment ; to do any non-criminal act, in relation to disputes between masters and workmen, shall be punishable as conspiracy. The Carlists claim that tlio victory of their troops over tho Alfonsoists at Carinern, was an important one. Paris, J uno 11.—M.OUlvior’s book in defense of the Ministry, and of which lie was the head in the breaking out of the Fra neo-Prussian war, lmsappcar ed. It declares that Prussia, by her insults, really declared the war. His Ministry cannot bn held responsible for entering upon tho conflict, for the act was unanimously approved by the (Senate and Legislative body; nor is it responsible for tlio military organization, which was the work of years before it came into power. M. Ollivier claims for his Ministry,; that in a few months after its organi- j zation it had calmed the public mind and restored tho authority of the Gov ernment without employing either corruption or intimidation. He pub lishes a letter from the Emperor, written after the fall of tho Ministry, expressing his continued confidence in it. In conclusion, Mr. Ollivier urges the Bona.parti.sts to help the present Government to maintain the peace, and respect, the Constitution; and when the opportunity comes for re vising the Constitution, then claim an appeal to the Plebiscite. Baltimore, June 11.—Tho graves of Confederates at London Park, were decorated with flowers Thursday, un der the auspices of tho Society of the Army and Navy of the Confederate States in Maryland. Tho oration was delivered by Mayor Robert Stiles, of Virginia.
