hi waxx tH, (la., June 15. Yesterday
morning a party of ladies and gentle
men, amongst whom were Mr. )•'. C.
O’Driscoll, Mr. Henry Stull/., Miss;
Rhotta and Master Charlie Johnson, ,
the two latter children of Mr. J. R.
Johnson. They left this place in the
steamer Mary Draper, for Reach
Hammock, where the part\ had pro-
Kosed spending the day. In the |
[afternoon several of the party, tie- ■
[cording to pryor arrangement, pre-
Ipnred for a surf hath, and among the
[number were Mis- Rettu Johnson, j
flier brother Charlie and Mr. O’Dris-i
■coll. These three, whether they yon- 1
Ituretl out further than the rest or not ]
Iwe are unable to learn, hut by some j
i means they were taken by an under:
|tow and Miss J.and her brother were
t carried beyond their depth“. Air. A.
[being near Charlie made un (‘(Tort to j
save him, hut as is frequently the
i case iu excitement and terror of the
moment lie clung to his neck and so
embarrassed his movements that
both, in a few moments, sank, and
were seen no more. Miss J. in the
meantime had been at the mercy of
the waves, and some say that
twice she sank, but her bath
ing suit buoyed her up, and
after being in the water about half
an hour sho was picked tip in an in
sensible condition by the Mary Dra
per, who had been some distance
from the scene and was hailed as soon
as the accident took place, and was
told to look about for a lady that was
drifting out to sea. Fortunately the
men on the steamer discovered her as
noon as they reached the spot, and
the engineer shoved off in a small
boat and soon had her aboard.
Nothing was left undone to rescue
the bodies of Mr. A. and young J.
but without success. And the steam
er left the scene for Savannah with
Miss J. undone or two others. The
vest remained at. Hammock, and will
use every effort for the recovery of
the bodies. Miss J. is pronounced
to be in no serious danger, although
much exhausted. Mr. F. C. O’Dris
e.illis known by all iu Savannah. He
leaves a wife, three daughters and a
father to mourn his sad fate.

GETTING naCRI.Y MORE CRITICAL.
Galveston, Texas, June 15. The
-Yeic.-i' Brownsville special says: One
i of the raiders of the party attacked
by MeNiily’s company has escaped.
He was wounded, feigned death,
crawled into high grass and was not
found. He is in Mntnmorns, and had
a bail extracted late yesterday. The
raiders’ casualties In the light sum]
ub twelve killed and one wounded.
They lost, besides eleven horses and
] saddles and all their arms, repeating
rifles and pistols. Private L. 1?.
Smith was buried yesterday. There
Was a large funeral procession citi
zens and soldiers turning out. Col.
Merinm, of the regular tinny, and
! Col. Ford were marshals. He re
ceived a military burial, honor by the
citizens and soldiers. Capt. MeXilly
could not go after the raiders under
Ricardo Flores, because his horses
1 were broken down. Gou. Cortina is
; incensed at the killing of his cattle
thieves. The Mexican pupers say
the raiders were assassinated while
j asleep. Capt. McNllly says if they
were asleep he don’t want to find any
of them awake. Cortina swears he
W ill have revenge. Cortina is arm
ing. and has been for more than a
week. He received a peremptory or
der to report at the City of Mexico,
and in the event of disobedience the
i order is for Gen. Fucro to arrest him.
If ho thinks lie can whip him, he
may cross to this side and place him
self at the head of the Mexican Squat
ters, desolate the country mid cross to
the Mexican side again and get
pardoned b> the Supreme Govern
ment. The troops are mt the alert,
and the citizens of Brownsville are
adopting defensive measures. No
one knows what a day or an hour
may bring forth. There i- no chance
for a division of opinion, everything
precludes a doubt, as to the account
ability of the Mexican Authorities
for the enormity of outrages and
dangers threatening tlio frontier.
Some of the Mexican officials are
•watching Cortina’s movements with
anxiety. Should he sueoeed, more
than one half of them will be march
ed to Laguna and shot. They are
honestly trying lb put him down,
not for what he has done to Ameri
cans but what he may do to them.
New Orleans. June 15. Late infer- 1
mation from Brownsville leaves no
doubt of Cortina’s intention to cross \
the Rio Grande with a large force, to j
avenge the death of the men killed by j
McNally, who wore in his employ. ]
Gen. l’uoro is on route from Monte
ray with three thousand Mexican
regulars for duty on the rivet. Cor
tina* is vicious and may attack him.
If defeated he will unquestionably
cross the river with his followers and
ravage the country. Fuero’s orders
are imperative to place Cortina in
arrest and Cortina will as certainly
refuse to surrender.
The Timm appeared as usual to
day. The iwper was set up mostly
by boys, and the office is guarded
night and day by a strong force of
police. Only one knock-down has
occurred.
