The vo to ran agricultural editor of
the Nashville Union and American,
$f jgpuniel Leo, writes ns follows to
the, iCural Carolinian:
Soldi'oe told me, thirty years ago,
that an Hereof South Carolina sun
shine, solar heat anil rainfall, will
produce twice as much cow feed in
twelve consecutive months for mak
injf either butter or cheese, as can be
grown in the sumo time on the dairy
farm in New York, on which I was
reared. Large dealers in butter, who
make it a study, say that the crop of
;; 187-i was not less than one billion live
hundred millions pounds in the Uni
ted; States, and if three pounds of
good butter fetch a dollar, then this
agricultural staple was worth to the
country live hundred millions dollars.
In the neighborhood, North, where
the writer practiced medicine fifty
years ago, the milk of two thousand
five hundred cowsismado into but
ter ami choose In one factory. Should
the time over como when the land
holders of the planting States think
seriously of butter-making to supply
in part the growing markets of the
world, let me say to t hem that in a
million pounds of pure butter there
is not an ounce of assimilated nitro
gen, phosphates or potash exported
in the staple sent abroad. Bermuda
and blue grass pastures will grow
from one decade to another for cen
turies, as well as the damp atmos
phere, so favorable to sea island cot
ton, as In England. No where on
'this planet can air and water bo
f transformed into grass, and grass in
to wool, cheaper than in South Caro
lina. It has becu well said that “his
, tory is philosophy teaching by exam
jple.” Listen to the words of t rut h
uul history. The same farmers of
Erie county, N. Y., who asked the
undersign to represent them in the
Legislature, wanted a County Sav
ings Bank. A charter for such an in
stitution was granted in 1844, called
the “Erio County Savings Bank."
The official report of the same made
on the iirst day of the preent year
shows the large sum of a=s,:iv*7,s-2t on
deposit. The Buffalo Savings Bank,
in the same city and county, returns
$5,(xi7,9(:6, and the Western Savings
Bank (Buffalo! $1,455,359. The total
sum deposited in banks of this class
in too State was $24(1,678,16-1 on the
first of January. 1875. No reader
should be olfendid if I remark that
the producing classes in the South
■ought, to learn more of the great art
of keeping property as well ns the
arts <>f skillful production. There is
pttmoro limit to tiie wealth which
good tillage and husbandry may call
into existence then there is to the
atoms which exist in the atmosphere,
iu the ocean, and in the solid earth;
but it requires study and science to
change a pound of air into a pound
of wheat, corn, cotton, meat, or wool,
to the best advantage.

preparation lor Neuralgia. I shall esteem my

Blasses of sufferers be led through me t" take the
Julep. My wife bus for ten (Id; years been a mar
ly r to the most malignant and persistent neural
gic torture, without being abl< to find any relief
Except from your preparation. She was relieved
by the second dose as per directions, and has not
had a return of it for two mouths. To some I
may see in strangely sanguine about your medi
cine, but I have a right to he so. It is not rea
sonable to suppose this malignant malady would
have died of sheer exhaustion of capacity for
sustaining itself, and that too in a minute, and
the very minute your medicine was taken. If so,
it ia a most remarkable, simple coincidence, and
I prefer giving the credit iu your favor of the
best testimony man can ever have—experience.
Vary truly yours,
JAMES T. TOSH.
Columbus, January 16, 1m75.
Mr.Jordan: —1 take great pleasure in recom
mending your Joyous Julep fur neuralgia,
has produced a most wonderful relief in one oj
the severest attacks of neuralgia my daughter
ever has had. She has been treated lor it by
three skillful physicians, with very little benefit,
and used all the usual remedies with little suc
cess. I cau with much confidence hope for a per
manent cure. It is only two days since we began
the use of it, and it is apparently of permanent
benefit, yours, with respect,
