I* KAIILY MAIN.
In *rly days, when fancy bold
My heart in bondage strong and itwcet,
And youthful aapiltmobi awcllcd
To glad fruition 'ueath my foot.
No dveam flf lamo allured my soul,
Beguiling it to height*) above;
A sweeter influenno bail control.
Aud all my dreams were dreams of love.
Then skies above were always bright;
The earth around mo over fair;
For hearts whoso love was infinite
(’an make an Eden anywhere.
I thought tho future hold for me
The calmest joys, the gentlest fkte,
And planned that household goods should be
The preoious things of my estate.
How strange ia all on which I gaae!
The i>ust—-how far away it seems!
Ah. me, but those were foolish days!
Ah, me, but those were foolish dreams!
The love that came to other men.
Around my doorway never grew;
I waited years aud years—and then?
Why, then I planned my life anew!
Crop Report*.
Wo have before us the consolida
ted report of the condition of the
crops of the State, complied by ltr.
Thos. P. James, Commissioner of
Agriculture.
From a general comparison of
tho return of the 111 counties that
have reported the following interest
ing information is gleaned.
Corn. —There are 7 per cent, more
acres planted in corn more than
last, or 152,16 acres more than last
year. There is also an increase of
per cent, in tho amount of fertili
zers used on corn: r>B per cent, of
these comspost. Xu preparation
aud time of planting, there is a de
crease of 3 per cent. A largo mar
gin from tho middle and lower
counties report tho best distance of
corn 4x5, 3x7, or 3x<;— the upper
counties, 3x4 3x5 and 4x4.
Oats—Ther is an increase of 12
per cent in tho uumbers of acres
sown in oats or 55,215 acres more
than last year. 49 per cent of these
wen- some in the fall, and 21 per
cent featilized, Tho condition of the
crop May 15th throughout the
State, was 1 per cent about an
average. A large majority who re
ported “best variety” give the pref
erence to the “rust proof’’--many
prefer the “winter grazing,” while
quite a number prefer what they
call the “yellow, which many mean
either of" tho above. A largo ma
jority sow one bushel of seed per I
acre some only one-half bushel, !
and others as much ns three!
bushels.
Wheat—The acreage in wheat is 14
per cent, or 50,239 acres more than
last year ; sper cent, more fertilizers j
used on it, and tho condition of the
crop, May 15, 1 percent, above an av- .
erage. The varieties principally rec
ommended as successful are tho
“Tappahannock,” “Early Red,” or
“Red May,” In the middle and lower
counties, and the “Tappahannock”
and the spring varieties in the north
counties. A large majority sow one
bushel per acre, while many sow on
ly one-half or three-fourths that
quantity. A few sow more than one
bushel.
Cotton There is 5 per cent, or BD,-
150 acres hiss cotton planted this
year than last. •Preparation of tho
soil is reported ouly two-thirds of 1
percent, inferior to last year, while
41 per cent, more fertilizers are used,
52 per cent, of which is compost.
It is gratifying to state that 83$ per
cent, of tlie corn being fed in the
Stato is home raised.
