Mock.—ln a recent conversation
with Professor Oully, of the Agricul
tural College, ho made a number of
very strong statements regarding
tho employment of muck in the farm
economy. He believes in a literal
interpretation of the old Scotch max
im, "Muck is the mother of the meal
tub." He is getting out tons of it on
the college farm and making his
barn-yard au immense compost heap,
using alternate layers of the muck
and oaru-yard manure. He also in
tends making a compost of clay ami
muck as a top-dressing for sandy
soil. The value of muck cannot well
bo over-estimated, and tho farmer
who husa muck bed of bis pwn buried
wealth U] kju his farm that is surer to
be more prolific titan a majority of
gold mines.
Muck taken from the bed and
thrown directly upon the land lias
been a common practice in the vi
cinity of Benton Harbor for some
years with beneficial results, still it
probably would bo more satisfactory

Bone Gathering in the Valley of
the Arkansas.—During the winter
and spring hundreds of settlers along
this valley have supported their fam
ilies by gathering up buffalo boues
and hauling them to tho towns. The
prairies for forty miles each way
from the railroad have been gleaned
over (ill not a relic of tho chase can
be found. Heads and ribs arc worth
$5 a ton; those are shipjied to Phila
delphia and ground up Into fertiliz
ers. Shins and shoulder-blades arc
worth slu a ton ; these go to the BUgar
refineries. The horns are worth S2O;
the tips arc sawed off here and sent
to the factories of umbrellas, fans,
pipes, &c.; the remainder is used by
the chemists. Bits of hide found
hanging to the heads are taken off
and sent to the glue factories. Every
fragment of these animals is made to
serve a purpose. The trade has been
opportune for the settlers, as it
brought them the means of a liveli
hood when the crops failed. —Kanttas
