Wasuinoton.-Julj' The Exeeu
tlve Committee of the National
Orange yesterday determined to send
throe of their number, viz,, Messrs.
Shunklin of lowa, Chose of Now
Hampshire, and Jones of Arkansas,
to represent the Patrons of Husband
ry In the Cotton States Congress,
which meets in Raleigh, N. C.,on the
ltlth lust.
The Executive Committee of the
National Orange lias spent consider
able time in receiving ami consider
ing the proposition of the English
eo-operatives for the union for com
mercial purposes of the two compa
nies. The co-operatives arc repre
sented liv Hon. D. Worrill, of Man
chester. England, who is managing
director of the company which is pro
posed as the bond of union. It ap
pears that the British co-operative
societies are not a secret body, hence
it will bo impossible, under existing
circumstances, to unite with the Pat
rons, but this difficulty has been met
by the formation of a trading compa
ny, having the endorsement and sup
port of the united co-operative body,
and the two bodies will form a coun
cil who will, by joint action, decide
what branches of business will lie
engaged, and detlne the method of
conducting the same. An American
will be. sent to Livingston to watch
the interests of the grange branch of
the company, and the English board
will have n like representative in New
Orleans, while the general supervisor
will bo in the hands of a managing
director, already elected, who, though
au Englishman by birth, lias been
twenty-three years iu America. The
proposition is regarded with great
favor, and it is expected tiiat the sub
committee of tlie National Grange,
to which the whole matter is referred,
will report on Monday.
Tlie co-operative societies of Eng
land are organized under tlie English
laws. The propositions arc to have
two branches of the society—one in
England and tlio other in the United
States. The board in eaeli country
is to have the absolute control of the
funds subscribed therein, and all to
be used for the purpose of interna
tional exchange of commodities. The
capital is $25,000,000. Alltrausaatious
are to bo made for easli or its equiva
lent. The British co-operators num
ber 500,000 members, have over one
thousand stores, some fifty or sixty
cotton spinning mills, about twenty
flouring mills, an agricultural and
horticultural society, and a number
uf manufacturers of commerce, a
large quantity of agricultural pro
ducts. The funds subscribed by tlie
English branch of tlie company will
lie employed in the purchase of ships,
the erection of warehouses and t lie
manufacture of such articles as are
in constant demand among the pat
rons of husbandry. These ships will
bring the goods to New Orleans and
other Southern ports, and to Eastern
ports if necessary, and they desire
the patrons to employ their portion
of the capital in conveying American
staples and products to meet these
ships, and thus make the necessary
exchange in the most direct and sim
ple manner. Tlie eo-operators have
a large surplus capital which is con
stantly on the increase and which
they triink can bo profitably employ
ed in trade, while each branch of
them will have control of its own af
fairs.
OnctCAHi) Grass.—A friend of ours
a progressive farmer in one of the
best farming towns of Western New
York—is enthusiastic about orchard
grass, Ho says he can keep a cow on
a half acre through the summer and
have some hay for winter use from
same plat of ground. Orchard grass
starts earlier than any other feed,
stands the drouth well, and not only
bears but needs frequent cutting or
cropping. Our friend’s plan would
be to pasture in sections, tying the
cow to a tlie duv ami
letting her eat the grass in a small
circle around it. As soon us any part
of it became largo enough to cut it
should lie mown, and either fed to
the cow at. once or saved for hay.
Nothing injures orchard grass more
than to let it get too large. The stalk
becomes woouy and the root is en
feebled. When cut often and early
the grass starts with astonishing
rapidity. No other grass will yield
as much good feed per acre, and no
other will better pay for liberal ma
nuring. New York Hural.
