All the lmpor for the money issued
by the United States Government is
manufactured on u sixty-two-inch
Fourdriuier machine, at the Glen
Mills, near Westchester, Pa. Short
pieces of red silk are mixed with the
pulp in the engine, und the liuislied
stuff is conducted to the wire without
passing through any screens, which
mightretaiu the silk threads. By an
arrangement above the wire cloth, a
shower of short pieces of line blue
silk thread is dropped in streaks up
on tile paper while it is being formed.
The upper side, on which the blue
silk is dropped, is the one used for the
lace of the notes, and, from the man
ner in which the Threads are applied,
niustshow them more distinctly than
the reverse side, ulthough they are
imbedded deeply enough to remain
fixed. 'The mill is guarded night and
day, by officials, to prevent tin- ab
straction of any paper. - Paper Trade

An Immense 1-lilntillg,
A private exhibition of Walker’s
great painting, "The Battle of Look
out Mountain,” was given in tile
rooms of the San Francisco Art Asso
ciation the other evening. It is the
largest painting ever exhibited, and
entirely conceals the wall against
which it is hung, it is thirty-two
feet long and fifteen feet in height.
Four years’time was occupied in pro
ducting this mammoth work of art.
It is the property of General Joe
Hooker. It is the most meritorious
battle picture ever presented for pub
lic inspection, and is a vivid portrayal
of tlie battle as it actually occurred.

liISM.IHCK AN I) Kmiouation.—The
Philadelphia Times remarks:
it lias been stated in the leading
papers of Europe that in order to ar
rest emigration from Germany,
Prince Bismarck has been offering
imperial lands for sale in small lots
at low prices. This, it was hoped,
would stop the tide by showing the
working classes of Germany they
could live as well there as in the
United States. But the plan did not
succeed. The lands were not taken.
Even the agricultural hands that re
main at home are not disposed to till
the earth when they can find more
remunerative employment. A letter
was lately received in New York
upon this subject from a highly intel
ligent gentleman in Prussia, in which
the writer says that field hands, just
now, can make more by working
upon forts and railroads than in
using the plow andseytho, anil, there
fore, the sale of land is extremely
dull and languid. Not until ail those
improvements are completed can it
be scon whether the men of Germany
prefer government lots on the Bis
marck plan to the advantages ob
tained under tho homestead law of
the United States. One thing is cer
tain, that at tho present time the sale
id imperial lots in Germany is not
brisk.
