XI NU MK PIETY. A NECHiO LAYMAN’S I'UAYEK. Alexander Clark, in his MethodiM Reoorder, gives a graphic description of “A Sabbath in Rionmond,” and an account, of his visit to the first Afri can Baptist Church, in that city. We take from it this specimen of charac teristic natural eloquence: A layman helm,' called upon to pray, led this part of the service in a fervent appeal to God. a plea at once eloquent In simile ami musical in ut terance. It wus a pictured petition, vivid to the eye and pleasant to the ear. With a voice of elevated key, tho pleader recounted the mercies of God, and besought, blessings from above. It may have been indecorous in us, but the prayer was unique, so like a chant, a dream, and yet so like a converse with the listening God, that wo ventured to note down a few passages, while no less sharing the devotional spirit of tho hour and place. [The words spaced wore prolonged and elrcumllexod in a higher key, as if the words of a song, while the Inter vening words were uttered with a rapidity almost beyond the appre hension, the final words of each sen tence being pronounced in a low voice and with the falling inflection.] “Oh! Lord, our blessed Father of love, thou k-di-o-w-s the ’dition of the worl’. Thou knows the p-o-r-e mis’- ble sinner despin' dy grace who turned Ills back upon dy call. Thou sees his footsteps in tlie w-i-l-derness, and you sees de bloomin’ roses grown, all ’round de thorns de debit's a sharpen’ for his feet. In this dark way of sin and death, while de loud thunders of de wrath r-o-1-1 in majes’ in his ears, and do b-l-a-z-e of dy fury flash in sudden fore his eyes, oh s-e-n-d your broodin’ spirit like a dove thro’ do storm and speak peace to his wretched soul ’fore ’tis o-v-o-r --lastin’ too late! Show him de slip pery rocks and de miry clay. Make him see dat Satan follows fast trip pin’ at his heels, and hell yawns open to catch him when ho falls. Oh, 'rest, him by de mighty p-o-w-o-r of dy grace. Pour down your mercy like rain from de Summer clouds. Make him open his blind eyes to see de b-c-a-u-t-y of dy holiness a shinin’ in de face of your beloved Son, like do rainbow when dp storm done gone and ]<assed away! "On, thou great King of Glory who rides in de gol’n chariot, in do Now Jerusalem, above do sun, I ’seech an’ p-r-a-y you drive dy white horses down dis way; and when de h-o-o-f-s of de horses strikes dis lower worl’ and de dashiti’ wheel* comes in our sight, stop dy chariot at, Washington city, and’light in loving kindness at do door of dy servant, de President Grant, an’ tell him ’xaetly what to do. Soun’ de tneanin’ of your will into de C-o-n-g-r-o-s-s halls, an’ tell de great men ’thout their own axin’ how to servo dare country bes’. Purge de hearts of de senators an’ ’sentatives from de love of sin, an’ 1-e-a-d dare stumblin’ stops from de snares of hell. Help them to ’member dy servants in everys-o-r-r-o-w and temptation, as Jesus ’mombers them. Thin out the ’sire of honor and the love of salary from their s-o-u-l-s like suckers out’ll corn; and may your name be above every name, and d-y kingdom come into the high places and do low like the light, of mornin’come to de hills an’ de val leys de same. Af’r leavin’ Washing ton city, an’ tukin’ dy time, drive your eliriot down over de Helds and reign up dy h-o-r-s-e-s of fire at the capital of Old Virgin’y. ’Light out at .do Governor, s door, and go into bis house an’ tell him what t’ings ho ought to say, an’show him what, things he ought to do, like a f-a-t-h --o-r who ’structs his own child.” D ANIEL R.
