Only tha United States, Belgium
and Italy have more men than wo
men. This is attributed to the wear
and tear of hard work, which-kills
offsomanyof the fair sex of these
countries. According to the census
of December 31,1871, Italy Imda pop
ulation 0f‘2(5,801,154, yielding a per
centagoof 50.27 men and 40.7;i women,
58 per cent, of old maids and bach
elors, HO per cent, of married couples,
and 0 per cent, of the widowed, of
whom the widows more than double
the widowers. In France there is
relatively the smallest number of
births, though old porsons aro there
preserved longer than in any other
countries, 22 per cent, of its inhabi
tants being over fifty years, and sov
en por thousand upwards of eighty.
In the United States there are only 'll
per cent, upward of fifty, while the
young of both sexes only reaching 20
constitute 50 per cent, of tho entiro
population.
The City of Paris.
In 1775 the total area of Paris was
7,410 acres; now it covers a surface of
19,266 acres. The number of streets,
squares, boulevards, etc., which
about a century ago was l.uoo, has
now increased to about threefold. In
1775 there wore 19.000 houses; now
there are 70,000 at least. Tho popu
lation. which a hundred years ago
was 555,000. is now in round numbers
2,000,000. It will bo seen from this,
that Paris lias in a century increased
in size about two-thirds: it has now
2,000 streets and 41,000 houses more
than in 1775, and at the sauio time its
population has tripled.

Jordan's Joyous Julep.
A Specific for Neuralgia.
TESTIMONIALS.
I’KTKnSBUiio, Va., Jan. 20tli, 1875.
John L. Jordan, Esq.—Dear Sir: Ho well pleased
am I witli your Joyous Julep, that I hereby tes
tify to the superior merit of your unequaled
preparation for Neuralgia. I shall esteem my
self happy should even one of that worst of all
rlass' H of sufferers be led through me to take the
Julep. My wife has for ten GO) years been a mar
tyr to the most malignant and persistent neural
gic torture, without being able to find any relief
except from your preparation. Hho was relieved
by the second dose as per directions, ami has not
had a return of it for two months. ■ To some I
may seem strangely sanguine about your medi
cine, but I have a right to be so. It is not rea
sonable to suppose this malignant malady would
have died of sheer exhaustion of capacity for
sustaining itself, and that too iu a minute, and
the very minute your medicine was taken. If so,
it is a most remarkable, simple coincidence, and
1 prefer giving the credit in your favor of the
best testimony man can ever have—experience.
Vary truly yours,
JAMES T. TOSH.
Columbus, January 16,1875.
Mr.Jordan:—l take great pleasure in recom
mending your Joyous Julep for neuralgia,
has produced a most wonderful relief' in one o
the severest attacks of neuralgia my daughter
ever has had, Hho has been treated for it by
three skillful physicians, with very little benefit,
and used all the usual remedies with little suc
cess. I can with much confidence hope for a per
manent cure. It is only two days since we began
the use of it, and it is apparently of permanent
benefit. Yours, with respect,
MRS. L. I. NORMAN.
