I iiII.-it Rlalm Mull.ilr. mid Hlial They lIrTCRI. Tho luterlor Department of the Uni ted States has had corapllod by Prof. W.u.kkii, of VuloColleße, tho Superin tendent or Census of 170,a Statist icul Atlas, which is siioken of iu the hiqh ost terms. The great faotsof our his tory and progress nro illustrated by mu) is. The editor of tho Chicago Tri bune has carefully examined this valu able work, and groups sou* of tho more interesting particulars as fol lows : . , • "The woodland and rain charts jus tify all that has been said iu disparage ment ot tho Interior deserts wnteh me Northern and Southern Paeiflle Hail roads pretended were lands of unsur passed fertility. They stretch iu dreary whito across the man, marked at thominimun standard oi wood and water. The rain map shows that the superior fertility of tho vicinity of Salt Lake City is not due, as so many •people have said, to Mormon energy alone. It received more rain than any other spot for hundreds of miles around. “The chart of mean temperature fails to show the tropical belt” of which Northern Pacific advocates huvo had so much to say -unless, in deed, a tropical climate belongs to a region iu which the thermometer varies from 90degrees and 7 minutes above to2o degrees below. The latter temperature would rather discourage banana-growers. "The colored population is cluster ed most heavily, of course, at the South, but Northern cities are dark ly shaded on the map. There are over 23 negroes to the square mile iu Cuicago, but their proportion to the whole population is only 7 per cent, labile it is over GO in parts of the South. Illiteracy coincides pretty closely with the distribution of the colored people, but the next census will doubtless show a marked differ ence in this respect. Illinois makes a good appearance in the map of il literacy. The southeastern corner <>t Tennessee has the most ignorant adult whito male population; GO per cent, cannot write. Southern Mis souri is the next stupid section. There is a striking coincidence be tween tho charts of illiteracy a ltd poverty. Tho most intelligent sec tions are tho wealthiest.” “The foreign population is almost exclusively confined to the North and to a strip of territory In Texas. The larger cities of the South contain a small proportion of foreigners, but nine tenths of that section have less than two foreign-born citizens to the square mile. Over ill per cent, of Chicagoans are foreign-born, and over (SO per cent, are of foreign par entage. Small charts show the dis tribution of particular nationalities. ‘A north and south line drawn through Buffalo will leave about two thirds of the Germans to the west and an equal proportion of the Irish totheeast;u north and south line drawn through Lake Michigan will leave four-fifths of the British Amer icans to the east, but nine-tenths of the Swedes and Norwegians to the west.’” "The map of public indebtedness is a strong argument in behalf of mu nicipal reform. It consists mainly of u number ofdots, which coincide with cities, and grow deeper iu color with the size of the city. There are, how ever, some unfortunate rural districts. The railroad aid bonds stain many Illinois and Missouri counties on the chart. The tax map follows this one faithfully. Chicago is darkly stamped on both, “The atl is shows that a person who wishes to bo born had hotter move west of the Mississippi. He has the best cnauee there, for the birth rate is heaviest in that section. The East is increasing iu population very slowly while the South is gaining rap idly. It is a noteworthy fact, how ever, that the birth-rate is in tho minimum in those sections of the South where the colored population is most dense. Will the negro die out? “Disease seems to be prelty fairly distributed. The South is the home of malaria, but it is comparatively free from consumption, which marks the New England States and the Up per Mississippi Valley iti blood-red. It is possible that, the heavy con sumptive death-rate in the valley is partly due to the number of dying patients who go there too late in search of health, but a glance at this map shakes confidence in the efficacy of Minnesota uir as a cure for con sumption. Fever bestows its curses quite impartially. Wo regret to say that idiocy increases more rapidly in Illinois than iu any other State, though Indiana follows close upon us and has a greater absolute number of idiots than we have. “The maps prepared to illustrate Prof. Walker’s article on the prog ress or the nation, give an interest ing picture of tho way in which the centre of population has shifted since 1790. It was then near Washington. In lHOOithad moved a few miles west, and the merest trifle to tho south. By 1810, its westward way had been deflected a little more towards the south. In 1820, it had shifted a great distance to the west. By 1830, it was nearly in the longitude of Pittsburg, and ut the most southern point it has ever touched. Since then it has gradually tended to tho northwest. It crossed Mason and Dixon’s line between 1830 and 1860. In 1870 it was in Ohio, about south of Columbus and east of Cincinnati, it was 4 min. 3 see. farther south and 7 deg. 34 min. 5 see. farther west than iu 1870. It will bo due in Chicago about 1900.” Auguxta Comtitutionalixt. G. A. Emj nr Kir: 80 well pleaaed am I with your Joyous Julep, tluit I hereby ten- i tify to the superior merit of your unequaled j preparation lor Neurn i. I Khali esteem my self happy should even ./us of that worst of all clauses of sufferers be led through me to take the Julep. My wife has for ten (10) yearn been a mar tyr to the most malignant and persistent neural gic torture, without being able to find any relief except from your preparation. She was relieved by the second dose as per directions, and has not had a return of it for two months. To some I may seem strangely sanguine about your medi cine, but I have a right to be so. It is not rea sonable to suppose tiiis malignant malady would liavo died of sheer exhaustion of capacity for Hugtaining itself, and that too in a minute, and the very minute your medicine was taken. If so, it is a most remarkable, simple coincidence, and 1 prefer giving tho credit in your favor of the best testimony man can ever have—experience. Vary truly yours, JAMES T. TOSH.
