Million* lu It.
In Tuesday’s Union and American
we quoted a statement from the New
York irorW, to the effect that the
peach growers ot Delaware and Ma
ryland, who will have eight millions
of baskets for sale this year, have
held a convention and appointed a
committee to make arrangements
with Rome foreign steamship for car
rying their fruit in good condition to
Europe, We may add that the coun
ty of Copiah, Mississippi, lias ship
ped s:wo,one worth ot fruits to the
North this season. This is the way
for the Mouth to utilise ail the re
sources It possesses, instead Of devo
ting its labor to a limitbd class of I
staple productions. Tennessee eau
raise immense quantities of fruits
and vegetables for the early markets
of the cities of the North and North
west. We assure our farmers that
“there Is millions in it;”- -Union and
American.
That is the correbt way to express
it. IVe must “utilize” all the re
sources that we possess. Reflect, that
our climate is adapted to certain
fruits that eau not be raised in the
North, and succeed better here than
further South. He who llrst owns
100 acres planted in figs and will
properly prepare them for market,
will reap a fortune. l’’igs can not bo
raised successfully iu the North.
Some interest was recently excited
in the Hois de Boulogne, Paris, by
the appearance every morning, be
ween 7 and 9 o’ clock, of a woman
with a black velvet mask concealing
her features, and mounted on a fine
ehesnut horse. The fair unknown is
tall, and judging from her rounded
figure, must be young.
That woman understands the i
French people. We will venture the
assertion, that there are a thousand'
men waiting each morning to see her:
pass.
Joaquin is at Long Branch. The
New York S uu says of him :
Joaquin .Miller is here. Ho bathed
this morning, amt was ns uncouth in
his dripping, clinging suit as any of
the rest. He is an excellent swim
mer, and after a long turn tar beyond
the ropes, he lay lazily on the beach,
and listlessly pawed in the sand. He
wears his yellow hair long, but is not
otherwise eccentric in looks or be
havior, ami is not generally recog
nized.
Uctlliw Out ul Bed.
Dr. Hal! does not approve of the j
old doctrine which was formerly in-j
stilled into the minds of children I
that they should spring out. of bed
the instant they awake in the morn
ing. He says: Up to eighteen years
ola every child should be allowed to
rest in bed, after the sleep is over,
until they feelus if they would rather
get up than not. It is a very great
mistake for persons, old or young -
especially children or sedentary per
sons—to bounce out of bed the mo
ment they wake up; all the Instincts
shrink from it, apd fiercely kick
against it. Fifteen or twenty min
utes spent in gradually waking up,
after the eyes are opened, ami in
turning over and stretching the limbs,
do as much good as sound sleep, be
cause the operation sets the blood in :
motion by degrees, tending to equal
ize the circulation ; for during sleep
the blood tends to stagnation, the
heart beats feebly and slowly, ami
to shock the system by bounding up
in an instant and sending the blood
in overwhelming quantity to the
heart, causing it to assume a gallop,
where the instant before it was a
creep, is the greatest absurdity. This
Instantaneous bouncing out of bed as
soon as the eves are open, will be fol
lowed by a weariness long before
noon.
