Mate Fair tor res pond cur®.
New Your, July 2'l, 187.1.
Editors Telegraph S' Mrttsrmjer: I
am glutl to say that it is likely we will
lmve at the approaching State knit', n
largo representation of exhibitors
uud visitors from each of Lite largi
cities of Baltimore, Philadelphia,
New York uud Boston. Through tin
kindness aud assistance of that polite
geutlemau uud courteous otUcer, Mr.
George Yonge, agent of the Georgia
Central Railroad, at 409 Broudway, in
this city, 1 have been euabled to ef
fect most fuvoruble rules for passage
and transportation to the Georgia
Slate Fair, from each of the cities
limned above, via tin- steamship lines
to Savannah and tho Central Rail
road. The fare from New York lo
Macon and return by this route will
be only #27, tickets good for twenty
eight day 9 and including berths,
staterooms and meals, on tho steam
ships. A special excursion ticket to
the “Georgia State Fair,” to carry
out this arrangement, will be put on
sale at each of these cities from the
7tlt October.
All goods for exhibition will In
transported at tho current rates pre
vailing at the time and returned/w.
Mr. A. Pope, the indefatigable and
accommodating general passenger
and ticket agent of the "Atlantic
Coast Line,” bus obtained for us an
excursion ticket via that line, at three
cents per mile going to Macon and
return free, or about $29 for the round
trip from New York to Macon and
return. The same rates will prevail
from Baltimore, Philadelphia, Bos
ton and Providence. Freights by this
line will also be transported at hall
tlie regular through rate. Thus wc
have facilities by either water or nit
rail at unusually favoralde prices for
getting to our great exposition in
October next.
NOTABILITIES WHO EXPECT TO ATTEND
THE FAIII.
While in Cincinnati i had the
pleasure to meet Mr. Frederick Hus
saurek tof whom your readers have
heard before as one of the gentlemen
expected to deliver an address at the
Fain, editor of the Cincinnati I’ulk#-
bliits, and a prominent and influential
leader of tile German people in the
United States. In personal appear
ance lie is small, thin, medium
height and fair complexion has a
bright, quick eye, musical voice, and
though a man of diminutive stature,
lias a commanding and impressive
bearing, lie is a man, 1 learn, ol
rare literary attainments, and lias
achieved quite an enviable reputation
as an orator.
There will certainly be a large aim
respectable delegation from the Cen
tennial Board in attendance upon the
Fair, prominent umoug whom 1
may mention Gen. J. R. Hawley,
President of tho commission, Mr.
Welch, President of the Centennial
Finance Board, and ex-Gov. Win.
Bigler. Gen. Hawley will very likely
make a short address at the fair,
selling forth the object of the Cen
tennial, aud urging tile Ho in tier n
States to the importance of their tak
ing an active part in the exhibition.
Georgia cannot afford to miss tuis
golden opportunity, of illustrating
her productions, manufactures, min
eralogy, geology, etc. that tire world
may be informed of the advantage®
which she offers in the way ol soil
and climate and natural resources,
uud she wilt not, I believe, let escape.
At our Fair will be a line opportuni
ty to make a collection from the ar
ticles ou exhibition, to be represented
hero in tlie Centennial, ami i trust
our Commissioners and those charg
ed with this duty, will improve the
opportunity. 1 visited the grouuus
and buildings aud lound preparations
going ou in tile grauUesl aud most
extensive scale, single buildings
covering acres ot ground and con
structed in the most approved style
for bounty, elegance, comfort mid
general adaptability to the purposes
ot exhibition in the special depart
ment for which they are intended. The
improvement being as yet in an in
choate condition, no just conception
could be formed of tho place us it
would be when per footed. A large
force is employed upon the work, uud
there is no doubt but that everything
will be in readiness before the exhi
bition opens on May in, l7<>.
In my travels X have met many gen
tlemen with whom X have conversed
freely concerning the affairs of the
South and of Georgia, and their pros
pects politically, agriculturally and
commercially. X liud a general lack
of information as to the true status
of tho South in these respects, espe
cially in the material progress she
has ’made since the termination ol
tlie war, many of them having never
visited Georgia, and others not since
the time when Atlanta was an insig
nificant railroad station, and Macon
poled tier cotton on liatboats to the
sea. I have invited them all down to
the State Fair, to see, ou that, impor
tant occasion, the South, and par
ticularly Georgia, illustrated, and
to meet and converse with our
people, and have been met with
the general response, “Weil, X have
been wishing to visit, the South for
many years, and I don’t know of a
better opportunity than at your fair;
I think X will come down then.” X
believe we may confidently expect a
large number of Northern visitors at,
the next State fair. A good number
of manufacturers and merchants
from this city will attend with a
stock of goods in their lines for exhibi
tion. I intended to speak of some of
the exhibitors in this letter, but find
X will not have space. I will say,
however, that our old friends of tlie
Fairbanks and Ilowe Scales Compa
nies will he down on a grander scale
than ever before and will make a dis
play that will astonish the natives. I
leave for Boston to-morrow. J.
