A celebrity Dead.
The following was translated by
Mr. C. F. Millerl of this' eity, from
the Swedish Now York North Star,
for the Daily Times :
The celebrated American skater,
Jackson Haines, expired Juue SSd, in
the town of Old Karleby, Finland.
His last words to his friends by his
bedside were: " Bury mo at Stock-!
halm, Sweden.”
Born tttul ruisßM in tho Uuitca i
States, knowing and known in all t he
European countries, everywhere win
ning laurels. Of all countries he loved
Sweden the best, and of all cities
Stockholm was ’his choice, there he I
delighted in spending his leisure
time, there he wished to die. Jack
son Haines’ birthplace was Boston,
Massachusetts. As his father was in
good circumstances ho wished his j
son to become a merchant, accord
ingly he was put in an office, but the
ice ami skating rink were by far more !
attractive to him than the desk, and
the office Boor burnt the feet that
were made for sliding on ice, encased
in steel shoes, lie soon made a repu
tation in Boston, then in New York,
and finally excelled every member of
these cities’ skating clubs. Gradu
ally he conceived the idea that ska
ting ought and could be made equal
ly as attractive a branch of art as
dancing. This he proved to the
world by his subsequent career,
us no one that has ever wit
nessed his feats in public exhibi
tions on tile ice would doubt that his
motions, at least, rivalled in beauty,
ease and grace the best performances
of any ballet-dancer. His pieces
when not, comic—were beforehand as
accurately calculated, studied and
practiced as a ballet-piece. He al
ways described figures, that he had
previously drawn on paper, to which i
lie affixed some suitable music which i
regulated the length and number of
steps to be taken. Asa consequence
he very seldom appeared in public
without accompaniment of music.
The writer of this hud once the pleas
ure of seeing his sketches. Some
represented houses, others land
scapes, but mostly rggular returning
curved ornaments, something like u
piece or lore or rich embroidery.
Comparatively only a few of the be
holders knew that Jackson Haines
had adopted this plan in order to at
tain the greatest possible ease in mo
tion. But no one will now say that
he did not succeed.
The “King of Skaters,” as ho was
called in Eurojie, was at his death,
which was caused by inflammation |
of the lungs; 36 years of age.
Cast a Line far yourself.
A young man stood listlessly watch
ing some anglers on n bridge. He
was poor ana dejected. At last, ap
proaching a basket filled with whole
some looking fish, he sighed “If.
now, I had these, I would be happy.
I could se.ll them at a fair price, and
buy me food and lodging.”
“I will give you just as many and
just as good fish,” said kilo owner
who chanced to overhear his words,
“if you will do a trilling favor.”
“And what is that V” asked the oth
er. eagerly.
“Only to tend this line till I come
back. "I wish to go on a short er
rand.”
The proposal was gladly accepted.
The old man was gone so long that
the young man began to be impa
tient. Meantime the hungry fish
snapped at the baited hook, and t lie
young man lost all his depression in
the excitement of pulling them in;
and when the owner returned, lie
hud caught a large number.
Counting out from them as many
os were in the basket, and presenting
them to the young man, the old fish
erman said:
"1 fulfill my promise from the fish
you have caught, to teach you, when
ever you see others earning what
you need, to waste no time in fruit
less wishing, but to cast a line for
yourself.”

The change in the climate of Color
ado is most likely owing lothc evap
oration of water from their system of
irrigation, and its condensation by
t fie cobl nignt air from the mountains.
The days being warm and the nights
cool, currents from the mountains set
in toward the valleys at nightfall, und
continue until morning. It was pre
dicted in early days that irrigation
would supersede irrigation by promo
ting rainfall.

At a religious revival of the colored

two lines are specimens:
