The OrlKlu or Hexex. Aristonhanoes, the funny man of classic Greece, gives the following myth: “Once upon u time man had three sexes and a double nature; be sides this, he was perfectly round, and had four hands and four feet, one head with two faces looking op posite ways, set on a single neck. When these creatures pleased, they could walk as we do uow, but if they wanted to go faster, they roll over with all their four legs in thenir, like a tumbler turning somersaults; and their pride anil strength were such that they made war upon the gods. Jupiter resented their insolence, but hardly liked to kill them witli thun derbolts, as the gods would then lose thoir sacritlces. At last he hit upon apian. ‘I will cut them iu two,' lie said, ‘so that they shall walk on two. legs instead of four. They will then be only half as insolent, but twice as numerous, and we shall get twice as many sacrifices.’ This was done, aud the two halves are continually going about looking for one another; il’ we mortals (says Arlstophances, with a comic air of apprehension,) are not obedient to the gods, there is a dan ger that we shall be split up again, and shall have to go about in basso relievo, like those figures with only half a nose which you may see sculp tured on our columns.” Moral Courage. A great deal of talent is lost in the world for the want of a little courage. Every day sends to the grave a num ber of obscure men, who have only remained In obscurity because t heir timidity has prevented them from maktuga firsteffort; and who,if they could have been induced to begin would in all probability, have gone great lengths in fame, The fact is,to do anything in the world worth doing, we must notstaud backshiveringand thinking of the cold and the danger, but jump in and soramble through as well as we can. It, will not do to be perpetually calculating tasks, and ad justing nice changes. It did very well before the flood, where a mau could subsist his friends upon an in tended publication for a hundred and fifty years, and then live to sec its success afterwards. But at present a man waits and doubts, hesitates, and consults his brother, and his uncle, aud particular friends, till one fine day, he finds he is sixty years of age, that he has lost so much time in con sulting his first cousin and particular friends, that he has no more to fol low their advice. —Sithiey Smith. To Can Fruit.- Use only fresh fruit, and that which is ripe—not too soft, just right to eat well; till your can full of fruit; put the can in a vessel of cold water, and put a few iron rings in the bottom of the vessel to prevent breaking; then make it hotter and hotter after the water lias become hot. Too gloat a heat at first will crack the cans at the bottom. Meanwhile making a syrup of white sugar and when your fruit is half done cooking, pour the syrup over the fruit, in the cans, und continue boiling until done. Remove from the fire and seal imme diately. Some prefer cooking their fruit before putting it in cans, it does not preserve its natural flavor as well, neither will the syrup bo per fectly clear. Cooking the fruit in the cans is the proper way of can ning fruit. Use half a pound of su gar to a quart jar of fruit. Cher ries, peaches, pears, raspberries will do with six ounces of sugar. Cook quart jars twenty to thirty min utes according to the ripeness of t lie fruit. Keep watch of your cans while boiling, and as the fruit lowers in the cans, till up with well-ripened fruit. Next morning test your jars ;if Un cover will not bear up the weight of the can, boil over again. In ten days from time of canning, test your fruit again, and if it holds, then it will j keep fur years. By this process you will nevet be awakened iu the night by a loud report as of a gun, and ! perhaps breaking some half dozen cans nearest to it. Keep your cans in acool, but not damp place. Tlio story of the NiUluin murder is being discussed once again in New York. In the police investigation that is in progress there, an ex-police men named Oonkling swears to having tracked up and arrested a man the morning after the murder was committed, against whomo Ids story makes out a strong case of cir cumstantial evidence. Oonkling says tnat ho visited Wash Nathan, one of the sons of the murdered man, and lie tried to dissuade him from working up tho case, and thatj when he wont to the Super intendent of Police for permission to follow it up, ho was flatly denied and was told to go back to his boat and about his bulsness. Oonkling story is calculated to revive tho old charge thut, lias been so often hinted at, that, Wash Nathan knew more about the dreadful occurence than it was expedient, to bring to light.
