The man was drowned, but the mule crossed in safety, walking on the bot tom and breathing through his ears. —Two countrymen went into a hat ter’s to liny one of them a hat. They were delighted with tiro samples, in side the crown of which was a look ing-glass. “What is that for?” said one of the men. The other, impa tiont at such a display of rural igno rance, exclaimed : “What for ? \1 ity, for the man who buys the hat to see how it fits him.” —A Presbyterian minister, while marrying a couple of his rustic par ishioners, felt exceedingly disconcert ed, on his asking the bridegroom if he wore willing to tako the woman for his wedded wife, by scratching his head, and saying: "Ay, I'm wul’ln’; but I’d rather hoe her sis ter.” —Mark Twain's joking advertise ment for the body of the boy who stole his umbrella at a base bull match, recoiled rather heavily upon him. Connected with this famous water ing place is a line old darkey, who sits on a pine plunk at the chalybeate spring and dips up water for invalids and others, receiving such trilling sums as the visitors may choose to give him. This darkey would not bo selected among a million for beauty. He is as black as any crow that ever flew over a corn-field. No blacker being ever lived, for they couldn’t. This oitizen is stoop-shouldered and bow-legged, and Ills lingers that look like hoop-poles when stretched out upon his lap. He wears brogun shoes IS Inches long, which look at a dis tance like gunboat models. Some body has given him a pair of tight legged trousers, so that as lie ap proaches you from a distance, you see his feet before his legs come to view, just as a canal boat heaves in sight before the attached rope can be “Jim,” said 1, “where in creation were those shoes made?” “In the penitentiary, sail: hit’s de only place I could get a fit.' “What’s the size?” “No size, sab; just put in what leather dey had on hand that day. ’Poa my word, sail, everybody axes ’bout dent shoes. The lady told him she would like some, and taking the pail from him she stepped Into the house. He did not follow, but remained behind, whistling to some canaries hanging in their targe on the side of the porch. “Why do you not come in and see if I measure your berries right V” said she; “how do you know but I may cheat you!” "I am not afraid, ma'am; you would get the worst of it.” “Get the worst of it?” said she; "wliat do you mean ?” “Why, liia’am, 1 should only loose my berries, and you would be steal ing ; don't you think you would get the worst of it?” A T4*mlc*r-Ilt*art*cl Mml her. A couple of enterprising Dutchmen, doing the clothing business in Atlan ta, are interviewed by a customer in search of a coat. This was too heavy for the dealer, so, taking his customer to the extreme end of the store, and drawing him into u dark corner, he whispered in his ear: “Mine frent, I let you have zat, coat for twelve dollars and a half.” “Well, sir,” said the customer, “I like youreoatvery much, and am s_at istied with the price, yet I would like to know why this misterious perform ance.” “Veil, Mine frent, you see dot leetle man dare?
