All I liKilllant Jokr.
She came from Detroit, Michigan,
and her great pride was being an In
valid. She lost no opportunity in
stating that she came to Minnesota
to recniterate. She did not hesitate
to enter into conversation with any
person she came In contact with, giv
ing advice, climatological or physio
logical, to invalids, ami seeking the
same from those of robust constitu
tion. Her conversation was always
prefaced with the Introductory in
quiry, so common to visitors, "Did
you come here for your health'/” She
thus addressed a stalwart, ruddy-vis
aged young man at the dinner taide
of the Metropolitan a few days since,
and tho following dialogue ensued :
“Yes, madam, 1 came hero proba
bly the weakest person you ever saw.
1 had no use of my limbs ; in fact, my
bones were but little tougher than
cartilages. I had no intelligent con
trol of a single muscle, nor the use of
a single faculty.’’
“Great heavens,” exclaimed the as
tonished auditor. "and you lived’/"
“I did. Miss, although 1 was devoid
of sight, was absolutely toot hless, un
able to articulate a single word,•and
dependent on others for everything,
being deprived of all power to help
myself. I commenced to gain imme
diately upon my arrival, and have
scarcelv experienced n sick day since;
hence t can conscientiously recom
mend the climate.”
“A wonderful ease,” said the lady,
“but do you think your lungs were
affected?”
“They were probably sound, but
possessed of so little vitality that but
for tho most careful nursing they
must have ceased their functions."
”1 hope you found kind friends,
sir?”
“Indeed I did, madam; it is to them
and the pure ait of Minnesota that I
owe my life. My father’s family were
with me, but unfortunately my
mother was prostrated by severe ill
ness during t lie time of my greatest
prostration.”
“How sad! Pray, what was your
diet and treatment?”
"My diet wasthe simplest possible,
consisting only of milk, that being
the only food my system would bear.
As for treatment, I depended entirely
upon the life-giving properties of
Miuuesotnnir, and took no medicines
except an occasional narcotic when
very restless. My improvement dated
from my arrival. My limbs soon be
came strong, my sight and voice came
to me slowly, and a full set of teeth,
regular and firm. appeared.”
"Remarkable, m raeulous! Surely,
sir, you must have been greatly re
duced in llosli?"
“Madam, I weighed but nine
pounds. 1 was born in Minnesota.
Good day.”—.St. Paul Pioneer Preen.

All newspaper readers in this State,
says tho Warrenton Clipper, cannot
fall to remember the startling and
unaccountable manifestations which
occurred at Surreiicy, on the Macon
.'c Brunswick Railroad, a year or two
since, ami which was attributed to
the agency of spirits. The house of
Mr. Surrency was turned into a per
fect pandemonium for tho time be
ing. Crockerv from unseen sources
would fall into the middle of rooms,
brick-bats would crash down, and
billets of woo 1 be hurled in at win
dows, seemingly without any human
agency. The wonderful occurrences,
however, finally stopped, and after a
while lived only in the remembrance
of those who had witnessed and
heard of them.
Some time since similar manifesta
tions began in the family of a very es
timable lady, Mrs. Russell Johnson,
of Bartow, on the line of the Central
Railroad. The crockery, brick-bats,
and other portable and small articles,
rained about the house in the nest
astonishiug manner, causing no little
terror to the inmates. However, Mr.
John A. McMillan, a son in-law of
Mrs. Johnson, not being frightened
entirely out of his wits, note I the
similarity of the manifestations to
those at Surrency, and finally remem
bered that they had employed in tin
family asa servant at the time, acnl
ered girl who had also been ia the
employ of Mr. Surrency at the time
those strange freaks of the unseen
agency took place in his house.
Thinking that, the two must certainly
have some connection with each oth
er, a strict watch was kept upon t his
girl, and she was finally detected in
the act of taking a brick from a con
cealed position about her person and
hurling it into the middle of the
room.
Here then was the secret. She was
immediately apprehended, and un
der fear of lining dealt with by law,
confessed that she was the author of
the mischief. She was of course dis
charged. What has been her motive
in all these actions is, perhaps, lock
ed in an impenetrable mystery, but
it will be a relief to many to know
the truth of these singular things
which so puzzled the brains of tin
good people of Surrency a year or
two since.

Tlmt is rather a Rood joke on the
Indian (tuptived in Florida, the refu
sal of their wives to join tliein. The
lhy chiefs who are in liinbo for in
(lnlyiny in the diversion or murder
ing the whites made a piteous appeal
for their duskey mates and littleones,
and their army officer in charge in
dorsed their request favorably. Gen.
Sheridan, in forwarding t lie request,
said the talk of the chiefs about
their wives and children was “mere
Indians twaddle, but, nevertheless,
1 1 ho General had just taken a wife
be it remembered,/ he would recom
mend that the request be granted,
since they would never rest until
they had them.” The requisite order
for the removal of the wives and chil
dren from the Indian territory to
Florida was issued, but now Agent
Haworth telegraphs that the Sioux
and Comanche women are unwilling
to go, and wants to know if he must
forcibly remove them. Perhaps, de
al wiring of their husbands’ release,
they have made other domestic ar
rangements. The question the gov
ernment must now decide is shall
tbev be forced to go in compliance
with the request of Imsbanes No. 1 ?
