Üb*frvwirc t tin- wnbluitlt In KnKlttiul. London Oomipondom* Now York Hnn.) The strict observance of the Sab bath by the English and their civil estness in religious mutters area char acteristic which forces itself upon a stranger’s attention very soon after his arrival, especially if he has previ ously been on the Continent. He sits down to his breakfast in London on Sunday morning and finds only stale bread on the table. The bakers d**' not bake ou Sundays. Hu calls tor the Times and is informed that the Times is not published either on Sun days. He goes out into the streets, which the day before were almost impassable from the crowds of pedes trians and vehicles, ami sees nothing i but bare {lavements and closed shut -1 tors. In fact, on Bond street and Piccadilly and all round that neigh borhood, the shops close early on Saturday afternoon, as they do in New York in wholesale establish ments. The ealis ply us usual on Sundays, and some of the omnibuses ; there tire trains on the railways, and the liquor shops are open ; but with these exceptions, all London stops work. I cannot add that it all goes to church, hut a good part of it does, and the rest amuses itself sadly, “after tho manner of the country, ” as Froissart said three hundred years ago. The English and Seoteli are, 1 believe, the strictest Sabbatarians in tlie world, and proximity to France, where Sunday is not even a holiday for multitudes, has not been able to change their notions. There must bo among them, too, a great deal of gen eral Interest in religious things, or else our American missionaries, MOODY AND BANKEY, could never have got together the crowds that they have. Their prodi gious m uccess proves the general dif fusion of religious education ami training in England, and the very op position they arouse is equal evidence of earnestness in their opponets. Whatever may be the faults of the established church, it has made reli gion fashionable, and a knowledge of thoßiblo and religious truth a nec essary part of a good education. A young man can not graudate at. (Ix rord without passing a thorough ex amination in the Old Testament his tory, tiro gospels, and the Acts in their original Greek, and repeat the thirty-nine article almost word for word. It is curious to note how familiar this makes the educat ed classes with the Bibb 1 . An allusion to a scripture incident Is made and understood as read ily in Parliament as it would be with us in a Presbyterian synod, ami 1 have heard a Queen’s counsel catch up such an illusion and dwell upon it in such a way that showed a most minute acquaintance with tho very text of the Bible itself. Another proof of this general knowledge of religious matters and interest In them is the com motion excited lately by Tyndall, Huxley, and their school, still later by Sir. Gladstone on the Popery question, and tiie combat now raging over ritualism in the church. Of course, religious feeling is not nec essarily incompatible with immoral conduct, but I am bound to say that if Eugiishmen aro immoral they at least the decency to hide the fact, so that it is not so apparent to a stranger as it is on tile Continent. “Cutting u Dido." This is a phrase older than most people imagine. Do you call to mind tho story of Dido, Princess of Tyre? Her husband, Aeorbas, priest of Her cules, was murdered for his wealth by the King of Pygmalion, brother to Dido. The widowed princess was en abled to escape from Tyre, bearing with her the wealth of her husliaml, and accompanied by a number of dis affected nobles. After a variety of adventures they landed upon tile coast of Africa, where Dido bargained with natives for as much land as she could inclose in a bull's hide. Selecting a large, tough hide, she caused it to be cut into the smallest possible threads, with which she enclosed a large t met of country, on which the city of Car thage soon began to rise. The natives were bound by the let ter of their bargain, ami allowed the cunning queen to have her own way ; and after that, when any one played off a sharp trick, they said lie had “cuta Dido.” That was almost three thousand years ago, and the saying haseomo down to our day. A New Y’ork woman, twenty-five years ago, wrote to tho postmaster of San Francisco, who was an entire stranger to her, stating that she was poor and wanted to go to California to teach. Several gentlemen made up a purse for her, and she went, proved a capital teacher, refunded the money, married another post master, and when he was removed lit out for Washington, where she got him reinstated pretty quick. “What’s your verdict, gentlemen of the jury,” asked a Montgomery justice, as the jury entered. "Well, boss! said the intelligent foreman, squirting a stream of tobacco juice over tie; clerk’s head,“the defendant looked sorter o’ guilty, and so we’ve found him guilty.” Pine Knot Springs, Eighteen mile* from Columbus, Board pftf mouth s2> 00 “ “ week 8 A “ “ day 2 oo Lodging or meal 50 Liberal reduction lor families or by the season.
