THE BAROV* COFFIN.
THE ECCENTRICITIES OF A VIENNESE NO
BLEMAN.
The Baron Von Hcnnlngstoin is
one of the characters of Vienna. He
is a banker and bachelor, and lives
in grand style. As ha has thus far
escaped matrimony, it is not likely
Hint his heart can be captured. But
it would be a splendid catch, as be is
rich—cannot forever live and she
whom he marries will be u Baroness
all her life long. Some time ago I
had the honor of an invitation to
dine at his house in a party of half a
dozen persons. After dinner ho took
mo round to show me his paintings
and bri-a-brao. The collection was
an excellent, one; and there was one
thing that was exceedingly bizarre in
its way. In one of the parlors ho ap
proached what appeared to be tne
solid wall, touched a spring, and
pushed open a door, which was con
cealed at its edges by the peculiar
pattern of the decorations. Passing
through the doorway-, he asked
mo to follow. I did so, and
ttie door closed behind us;
and where do you think I found my
self? We were in what tho French
call a chapletto ardente —a sort of
mortuary chamber, littod up like a
chapel. There were a few sacred
pictures on the wall, a couple ol'
lamps were bilrning rather dimly,
and giving just enough of light to
ntako the place and its contents visi
ble. In the centre of the little
apartment, and resting on a nar
row table, was an cinptv coffin, ole
guntly and richly constructed ami
evidently constructed in accordance
with the tine taste of my host. Over
the head of tho oolTin hung the es
cutcheon of tlie baron, ami beneath
it was printed his name and date of
birth, followed by the words, ‘'Hied
—,187—.” The whole scone was so
novel and had taken me so much by
surprise that I did not know what to
ay. While I was looking around
snd silent tho baron said :
"How do you like this?”
I was at a loss for a proper remark
to make, as I had not been accus
tomed to speak to gentlemen in com
mendation of their taste in arranging
their own coffins. I said the llrst
thing I could lilt upon, and thought
I had done it rather neatly, but, it
turned out that I hud bunglod tho
business altogether. Calling atten
tion to tho “Died - , 187—,” 1 said :
‘‘ln a few years you will have to
change your ‘7’ for an ‘B.’” "And
why not to a ‘9’ and so on,” lie re
plied, rather mortified, evidently, at
my unintended intimation that lie
might dio in one of the years between
1000 and 1890. 1 came to my own res
cue bv suggesting t oat t lie year should
have been altogether blank, us it was
only a short time to 1900, which would
require an alteration of all the figures
but one. Their baron immediately
after led tho way out of his coffin
room, and we rejoined the guests in
the parlor, lie was us gay and lively
as one could wish. He does not often
exhibit this room; I doubt if thoro are
many is'rsons who have ever been
there, but I am told tho coffin has
been ready and waiting for it.s occu
pant more than twenty years. At
one time he was in declining health,
and Ills doctors told him lie could hot
livelong. He made all his prepara
tions regarding hiss property, ami
wound thorn up by ordering liis* cof
fin. The coffin was brought, and
from the day it entered the house, lie
began toreeover. When his health
was restored lie was inclined to at
tribute it to the presence of his coffin,
and so he fitted up this little chapel
for its reception. —Londnn pictorial

Sleepless nights, twitching of the muscles,

If the watery portions of our food are not puss

produce serious difficulties. Language fails
when attempting to describe the sufferings of per
sons whose kidneys are out of order ; gravel,
back ache, inflammation of the bladder and of tho
delicate membranes of the urinary organs are the
result if tho water is not regularly and properly
carried through the kidneys.
The Cordial Balm of Syricum
is effectual in promoGng the secretion of the wa

in carrying it off by its proper outlets.
Whatever portion of our food is unserviceable
should be passed off in tho water in sweat, aud
from the bowels. If these useless mutters are
retained disease is sure to follow, for then tho
blood becomes poisoned with the impurities
which should pass off in their proper clianuels.
The Cordial Balm of Syricum and Tonic Pills
is a powerful cleanser of the blood; it Blurts the
liver and kidneys into active operation, and acts
on all the secretions of the body. It carries off
old and foul elements in the blood, which are
slow and sure death if allowed to remain in the

How few people are found without some indi
cation* of nervous disease. This truth has been
recognised ever since classic ages, when a sound
mind in a sound body was held oh the perfection
of human existence. Some from congenial dis
ease, others from youthful indiscretions, some
from alcoholic indulgence or too free use of to
baeco, suffer from tremor, palpitation of nervous
excitement—all of which can be removed and per
manently cured by the English Remedy, the Cor
dial Balm of Syricum, which ha* long been in the
old country the favorite remedy, and which,
since its introduction into this country, ha* dis
tanced all other medicines having the same ob
