Time to tut tiraiui.
The hay crop, according to tho last
census, cannot bo estimated at loss
than $400,000,000, and this Immense
aggregate bliows the importance of
husbanding the great resource in tho
best manner. Wo shall not overstate
the fact if we say that 25 per cent, of
the hay crop is lost by late cutting.
Nature, in her effort to perfect the
seeds in all our cereal grains and
grasses, accomplishes this at the ex
pense of the nutriment contained in
the stulk. In fact, it may be nssumed
as true, that at the time or blossom
ing the stalk contains all the nutri
ment that the seed and stalk contain
after ripening, and therefore that
nothing has been gained by allowing
the seod to ripen, unless in the ease
of cereal grains, which are most valu
able for their seed. As the seed
ripens, the soluble food constituents
are taken from tho stalk to perfect
the seed. Chemical analysis lias
shown that clover, just before blos
soming, contained only 28 per cent, of
insoluble woody fibre, but immedi
ately after blossoming 48 por cent, of
insoluble ilbre. All experiments tend
to show that our grass crops intended
for fodder should be cut and oured into
hay before nature has commenced tho
formation of seed. Therefore, the
proper time for cutting grass for hay
is the commencement of blossoming.
There ismoro sap in it at this time, and
consequently it requires more curing:
but each ton of hay cured is worth at
least 23 per cent, more as nutriment
for stock than after the seed forms.
Hay is also injured by being too
much exposed to the rays of the sun.
This causes the volatile aroma to
escape, und also dissipates much of
tho coloring matter, as may be scon
by the bleaching, and also by feeding
to milch cows, from which the milk
nnd butter will be light-colored.
Here eoines in tho value of tho hay
cap, which protects tiie hay cock
from the rays of the sun, and allows
it. to cure with tho tine green color
preserved.
We write thus early that our readers
may havo their attention called to
this important matter in season.
It is one of those subjects that seem
to require reiteration more than
almost any other. The farmer is
conservative of old habits. He lias
heard many say that ripe hay goes
further —spends better. Yes, and
brush would last still longer for fod
der. The poorest fodder undoubt
dly lasts the longest, but not the
cattle. — Fanner's Union.
Harvest Prospect* la Knirlauil.
Mr. Jas. Sanderson, said to be relia
ble authority, writes to the London
Times under a late date :
“The numerous predictions of an
early harvest this year have not been
fulfilled. The almost continuous
rainfall during the last fortnight hus
greatly retarded the maturing of llie
crops, and even with the most favor
able weather harvest will not be gen
eral in the southern, eastern and mid
land counties before tile middle of
August. The wheat crop has suffer
ed severely from the heavy rains of
tho present week, and is more twist
ed and beaten down than any crop
since 186'J. On the extensive Fen
area--usually the best wheat produc
ing area- the damage is very serious.
The crop is laid flat to the ground, as
if rotted, and the finest weather will
not raise itagain. Wheat, generally,
is thinly planted, and apart from the
damage by rain its yield would have
been short of the greatly overestima
ted crop of last year. As it is. the
yield must beamier average, and the
quality inferior. From the excess of
moisture and the absence of bright
sunshine rust is prevailing.”

Kidney Diseases
and many other difficulties are cured by the use
of the Cordial Balm of Syrup ami Tonic Pills.
If the watery portions of our food are not pass
ed off, they must, when retained in the system,
produce serious difficulties. Language fails
when attempting to describe the sufferings of per
sons whose kidneys are out of order : gravel,
back-ache, inflammation of the bladder and of the
delicate membranes of tho urinary organs are the
result if the water is not regularly and properly
carried through the kidneys.
The Cordial Balm of Syricum
is effectual in promoting the secretion of the wa
tery ami uunutritious portions of the food, and
in carrying it <>ff by its proper outlets.
Whatever portion of our food is una#viceable
should be passed off in the water in sweat, and
from the bowels. If these useless matters are
retained disease is sure to follow, for then the
blood becomes poisoned with the impurities
which should puss off in their proper channels.
The Cordial Balm of Syricum and Tonic Pills
Is a powerful cleanser of the blood; It starts the.
liver aud kidneys into active operation, and acts
on all the secretions of the body, it carries off
old and foul elements in the blood, which are
slow ami sure death if allowed to remain in the
system.
