While the total value of the farms
in the United States is put down at.
$9,202,803,301, the value ill the above
small-farm States foots us $3,407,587,-
178, or nearly three-tifths of the total
—and this, too, while the area of t he
States is leas than one-tenth of the
area of the whole country. No more
conclusive exhibit, of the practical su
l>eriority of the small-farm system
could be given than this.
While this record is of interest to
those engaged in farms, the following
table, collected from our agricultural
reports, is of hardly less interest.

The census returns of Massachus
etts, although not yet complete, will
probably snow that Bostou has a
population of 335,000; Worcester. 50,-
000; Lowell, 48,000; Fall River, from
43,000 to 45,000, and Cambridge some
what more than Fall ltiver. All the
cities of t he State, save Newburyport,
and Salem, have increased in popula
tion since 1870.
Conductors on the Pennsylvania
Railroad are required to wear a uni
form without pockets, and to carry a
satchel into which tickets and money
must ho deposited, and which cannot
be unlocked except at the end of the
conductor’s run by a special agent.
A cashmere shawl is to lie present- i
ed to the Princess of Wales on the
occasion of her visit to India, it is
now being made at Srenuggur, and
will cost $4,000.
