Irrigation in imliu and Httyiit.
Prof. Goorgo Davidson, in n letter
to tile San Francisco Call, dated Tu
rin, July lith, thus speaks of the
matters which have engaged his at
tention after leaving Japan:
In India I traveled over 8,800 miles,
and examined seven of the great
schemes of irrigation, whore the
works were in various stages of pro
gress, as well as complete. It is mar
vellous what they have done, ns well
as what they have projected; and 1
feel that by this personal examina
tion of the details and a cat-etui study
of the great projects, 1 have gathered
a vast amount of information useful
to our needs of irrigation from liHt|
degrees meridian to the Pacific.
Every facility and assistance was
afforded me l>y the Viceroy and the
lioyal engineers who have charge of
the different works. I had no reason
to think that any information was
withheld. On the contrary, had 1
been two months earlier, I would
have been shown all the works of the
southern and eastern coasts toward
Madras, and some of the inundation
works near Lahore. But from those
I visited I gathered all that was ab
solutely necessary to comprehend
their works beyond the dry outlines
of the books.
In Egypt T traveled 1,250 miles,
and gave up thirty-eight days to ex
amining the Suez Canal and the in
undation work of Egypt. At the re
quest of General Stone, I extended
my inquires far up the Nile, and
wrote him a long latter expressing
my views of the best system for the
country. He expressed himself great
ly pleased therewith, and perhaps
more especially as it was in eoutliet
with the (English) Fowler scheme,
which proposed to turn the whole
Nile out of its bed. and $:i3, 000,000
outoftho Khedive’s Treasury. The
English project would "swamp" the
nation financially, and perhaps ag
riculturally, every few years. My
project will be placed, word forward,
before the Khedive, and lam not
afraid to have it criticised severely
as an engineering and commercial
project.
To-morrow 1 visit the great "Fa
vour Canal,” that irrigates the great
er part of Lombardy, and with one
of the Italian engineers. I examine
the works at Ohivasso, Lolluga and
Mereelli. Afterwards 1 shall exam
ine the great pumping works near
Ferrern, for drainage etc. All this
work has given me liule time for
sight-seeing, and I see a vast amount
of work yet to bo done before l cross
tho Atlantic. But I cannot lose this
opportunity of learning from actual
works what may be of value to our
citisons of the Paeifte Coast. I have
got over 22,18)0 miles of Lint l and wa
ter since 1 left. San Francisco, and
will cover about 13,1KK) more before
returning. Yours, very sincerely,
Glioma: Davidsox.

Memphis claims proprietorship in
a plan for jail building which is cer
tainly novel ami lias every appear
ance of being valuable. The walls of
the jail are hollow and flUcd with dry
sana, while a huge tank of sand on
the root is connected with the hollow
in the walls. If any opening is made
into the walls the sand will immedi
ately pour into it in a resistless vol
ume, and if the hapless individual,
who has brought this shower on him
self by attempting to escape, lie not
rescued shortly, In- smothers. To
prevent this catastrophe a weight is
placed on top of the sand in the tank,
and as soon as the sand begins to
sink the weight touches a spring
which sets an alarm bell ringing and
the jailor is thereby notified that his
services are required. Tho cost of t his
ingenious device is not stated, but it:
ought to be comparatively cheap to
insure it the preference, over the
keeping of a competent force to pre
vent jail-breaking by watchfulness.

recognized ever since classic ages, when a sound
mind in a sound body was held as the perfection

from alcoholic indulgence or too free use of to
bacco, suffer from tremor, palpitation of nervous
