Half a mile south of the Vinlalid
Baptist church stands a farm house
on the west side of the road, on a
slight knoll, somewhat back from
the beautiful “ridge road” which
traverses that romantic locality. It
was here that occurred a little bit of
romance on Bunday, which com
menced witli a horsewhipping, had
a runaway for im interlude, and
wound up with u wedding. A widow
lady resides ill the aforemciiiioned
mansion wit li her daughters, one of
whom lias arrived at a marriageable
ago, and of course are the recipients
of more or less attention from hope-1
fill and expectant young men of mar- [
riogcablc intentions.
Mary Jane was a young lady of]
seventeen summers, rutliernttractive, |
and had molted the stony heart or a j
young man named C—a carpen
ter by trade, formerly of this city,
but who at present resides in Fond
du laic. C—- lmd made frequent
visits to tiie house and courted alary
Jane to the displeasure of the old
lady, who finally secured a horsewhip,
which she concealed In the usual
hiding plaoe— the mattress of the
bod—and threatened if “V liever
eame near the’ouse again she would
thrash im within a hiueii ot 'is life."
Last Sunday, however, the young
gentleman hud come all the way
from Fond du Isic to visit the object
of his uudyiog Hume. He drove,
with a siKUiking new rig. through
the guteand ill' the drive-way to tin
house. Tiie old lady hud lire in her
eye. While Mary Jane was busily
eiigaged In roliiug herself lh her pret
tiest habiliments, tier mogu-r i
pounced upon her waiting lover lfiN
a Ku-Klux on a Southern sehoolmas
ter, and proceeded to warm him in a
way that ho thought very peculiar.
The old lady has the nerve of a lion, j
and she laid down the blows thick]
and fast ; young C kept driving
round and round, trying to shield j
himself in the eurtuqge-top. It was ]
no go; she was getting the nest of
him. He finally drove to the gate,
and as he jumped out to open it she
caught him by the throat, cut him
fearfully over the face and head with
the whip, and used the fellow up
completely.
By this time Mary Jane lmd np
peered on the seem*, and hastened to
tiie little front gate, where she waited
until C had once more jumped
into tiie carriage, when in she jump
ed beside him, and away they sped
down the road, leaving the irate mo
ther blank with rage and astonish-I
inent,
Tiie action of the old lady had
brought matters to a climax, and it
was either do or die. Tiie conse
quence was they drove straight, to
Fond du Lae, and that night they
were married. T’lie affair caused
quite a ripple on the surface of so
ciety in tiie town of Vinlaud, and
created much gossip and excitement
in that usually quiet vicinity.
Y \l>le Will*.
During the revolution in Poland
which followed tiie revolt of Thud- j
ileus Kosieusko, many of the truest
and best of the sons of that ill-fated ]
country were forced to llee for their i
lives, forsaking home and friends, t
Of those who had been most eager
for the liberty of Poland and most 1
bitter in the enmity against Russia and
Prussia, was MichaelSobieski, whose
ancestors had been king a hundred
and llfty years before. Bobieski hud
two sons fn the patriot ranks, and fa
ther and sous hail been of those who
had persisted in what tiie ltussians
had been pleased to term rebellion,
uniin price had been set upon their
heads. The Archduke Constantine j
was eager to apprehend Michael So
bieski, and learned that the wife of j
the Polish hero was at home in Cra
cow, and he waited ujioii her. “Ms-;
dam,” he said, speaking tiolitely, "1
think you know where your husband
and sons are hiding?” “1 know, sir.”
“If you tell me where your husband!
is, your sons shall lie pardoned.” j
“And shall lie safe?” “Yes Madam, i
swear it. Tell me where your hus
band is concealed, and both you and
your sons shall be safe and unharm
ed.” "Then, sir,” answered the
nolde woman, rising with a dignity
sublime, and laying her hum! upon
her Ikwoui, “he lies concealed in
the heart of his wife and you will
have to tear this heart out to Mud
him.” Tyrant as lie wits, t lie Arch
duke admired the answer, and (In
spirit, which had inspirited it, and
deeming the good will of such a wo
man worth securing, lie forthwith j
published a pardon of the father and j
sons.
