Sept. :i, Post and \ Mail.] An unsuccssfui attempt has been j made to suppress the particulars of a burglary at the Flteh-aherman man sion on Eugenia street, but as it has failed, I send you au account of it: About daybreak on Tuesday morn ing a bold attempt was made to bur flarizo the residence of Lieut. Fitch, I. S. N. Mrs. O’Grady, the house keeper of the establishment, was aroused by a slight noise, and after staring around nor for a few mo ents she dimly distinguished the tiig uro of a man not fur from her bed. Bhe satistied herself that there was only one of him, and thou determin ed to capture him alive. Jnumping out of bed, she made a dash at him, and paying no attention to a pistol which he [minted at her, site caught hold of him. .The scene must hare been eminently romantic as Un couple soufllod around the room. The burglar was too shrewd, of course, to use his pistol, knowing that the noise might result in his capture be fore he could get out of the nouse, and then it would go hard witli him. Oh tne other hand. Ins dimlnutiv size made the lady quite a match for him, without odds, and he could do no bet ter t ban to dunce and dodge around, catching a whack iiere and a scratch there, until he got to the window. Dashing through it on the porch, lit- 1 called aloud to a confederate, "Cook , your pistol, Bill." Mrs. O’Grady did j hot care to take her chances with a j fellow armed with a pistol and out of ; her reach, so she let upon tin-pur suit and began to yell. The Imrglar, meanwhile, dropped down to the ground and made off. Lieut. Fitch was awaken by the screaming, and ran out, pistol in hand, but was just a few' seconds Lm late to get a oluuiee to puncture somebody. It was found that the burglar had climbed up to the high porch and gained entrance to Mrs. O’Orady’s room by cutting out j They, of course, got no booty. The police were notified, and Mrs. i O’GraoX gave such an accurate de scription of the scoundrel whom she | had warmed up that he was at onco some slats and opening the shutters, recognized as a young ex-convict named Tom ’Whaling, who was sent to the penitentiary some t ime ago tor grand larceny, but who was pardon ed out. Immediately on receiving his pardon he had gone tollot Springs, in company with another fellow, named William L. Hendder. for his health. Only a day or two ago these worthies returned to St.. Louis, and they had already been spotted by the detectives. Detectives Kahili, Eggs and Stewart were sent out, and in a few hours they brought in both the men. The ex-convict was positively indentified by Mrs. O’Grady as tin man she wanted, and both the lads were committed to jail, charged w-ith burglary aud attempted larceny. ItlMtk-. And in a corner of my house I have books! the miracle of all my posses sions, more wonderful than the wiah ing-oap of tlie Arabian Tales; for they transport me instantly, not only to all places, bat to all times. By my books I can conjure up to vivid existence be fore me all the great and good men of antiquity; and for my individual sat isfaction I can make them act over again the most renowned -if their ex ploits. The orutars proclaim for me; the historians recite; the poets sing; in a word, from the Equator to the Polo, and from the beginning of time until now.'bv my book* I fly whither I please. This picture is not. over charged, and might be much extend ed,- -Arnott’i) P/nfslv*. In books we find the dead as if alive : in books we foresee things to come; in books warlike affairs are methodized ; in books the rights of peace proceed. , All things are corrupted and decay with time. Saturn eeaseth riot to de vour his offspring, and oblivion cov erelh the glory of the world, if God hud not porviih-d a remedy in books. *“ * To books how easily, how secretly, how safely, may we expose the nakedness of human ignorance, without putting it to shame. These are the masters who instruct us with out rods, without anger, without re ward. If you approach them they arc not asleep, if you iuterlogate them they do not conceal, if you mistake them they do not murmur, if you are ignorant they do not. laugh. Leisure without books is the sepul ture of the soul. - Sene, a, ThkChildben. The Baltimore tla ze.tte says: A child beginning to read becomes delighted with a newspaper, because he reads of names and t iiings which ure familiar, and he will pro gress accordingly. A newspaper one year is worth a quarter’s schooling to a child. Every father must consider that information is connected with advancement. The mother of a fam ily being one of its heads, and having a more immediate charge of children should herself be instructed. A mind occupied becomes fortified against the ills of life, and is braced for emer gencies. Children amused by read i rig or study are ofttime-s more consid erate and more easily governed.’ True as the gospel according to Ht. Luke.
