Chamber of Commerce.
A large and Interesting mooting of the
Chamber of (kimmoreo wah hold lawt night
at the Court House; MaJ. A. M. Allen,
President, in tho chair.
Mr. EbUjb, from tho committee on im
proving tho roads lending from Colum
bia, by convict labor, reported that In a
rooent trip U> ('uoaota and Lumpkin, in the
interest of (he movement, he met with
groat tuioouragefluont from ti*o {xxiple of
Chattahoochee and Htcwart counties, and
that they woro all willing and anxious to
get tho movement under way of combining
the chain-gangs of the counties to work
those roads.
On motion of Mr. Redd tho committee
was continued and Instructed to try and
get some legislation by the Btate authori
ties to allow all tho convicts from these
counties to bo put together for this pur
pose.*
MaJ.: Allen, from the Committee on
Transportation, reported that he had by
correspondence, had the rate on cotton re
duced so as to make Columbus able to
compete with Montgomery.
Dr. Hood mode some sensible and well
timed remarks on transportation, and
thought that if all else failed to get fair
rates, that the matter could bo reached
through tho Grangers by legislation to
make a limit to the rates that railroads
could charge.
Mr. Cawley stated that he had assur
ance in New York from the agent of the
Pennsylvania Central Railroad that if Co
lumbus would give it all its business, that
they would reduce the rates—say 831* per
centum and make the light for one year.
MaJ. Allen stated that he would appoint
a permanent Committee on Transporta
tion tomorrow, to look after all such mat
ters, and to sec if all discriminations
against Columbus can not be done away
with.
Messrs. Redd, Estes and Hood thought
this committee could succeed in reducing
freights so as to compete with neighboring
(titles.
Major Allen called Mr. Estes to
the chair, and after a very sensi
ble and able speech, which was lis
tened to with marked atttention, by the
Chamber, introduced the following resolu
tions, which were unanimously adopted:
Resolved, that a committee of four in*
appointed, of which the President shall be
one, whoixAluty shall be to consider our
Interests In the North A Mouth Railroad,
and to present to this body the best plan
whereby said interest cun be best pro
moted. Tt shall also be the duty of said
committee to represent this body in a
railroad meeting to be held at Greenville,
On., 10th of October next.
Recognizing the fact that the agricultur
al, manufacturing and commercial inter
ests aro the great basis and instrumental
ities upon and through which our country
into progress, and each dependent upon
the other for trinmrogress; therefore,
Be it resolved, That this body is always
ready to unite, In eouncll or otherwis**,
with able and t rue organizations for the
promotion of these great interests.
Be it further resolved, That we deplore
any action, in any direction, which has a
tendency to array In hostility either of
these interests.
Our aim shall le so to manage our busi
ness as to help build up the agricultural
ami mechanical Interests of the country.
After much other discussion from vari
ous members, the Board adjourned to the
regular meeting in October.

A year or two ago, a negro with a high
sounding name, “sorter” like George
Washington or Andrew Jackson, was
caught driving a cow into town without
the consent of the owner. He was arrest
ed, and iti duo course of time it was de
veloped before a Jury of twelve upright
citizens that, tho said George had appro
priated a fine cow belonging to Mr. Frazer,
ex-tax collector of this county. Tho proof
was conclusive, and George was required
to atone for tho offense of which ho had
been convicted by serving the State of
Georgia in tho capacity of a day laborer.
Arriving at headquarters he was delivered
over to a party of gentlemen living in
Washington county, who proposed that.
Georgo should assist them in tilling the
soil and raising tho fleecy staple. George
yearned for more cows to capture, and
one night, while the guard was dreaming
of sweet home, fie made an abrupt depart
ure. Since that time George lias traveled,
but ho could not refrain from coming back
to tho scones of his rougtsh freaks, so
while perambulating on the banks of the
Chattahoochee ho was recaptured byofll
cors Moore and Smith, and deposited in
the guard-house. George languished
there several days, but yesterday lie was
released from those familiar quarters and
carried back to Washington county. So
George has about arrived with his pres
ent owners, and will bo required to remain
just twice as long as he was originally re
quested to do. Such a life! But such are
the experiences of all thieves that stop
! around Columbus. Home of our officers

Yesterday a pair of ambitious young
oxen, which were driven to a little two
wheel cart, became excited by the heat and
panted for tho shade of the side walk.
They did not care for consequences, but
made direct for the Virginia Store to in
vest in cheap goods, but the carriage of
Dr. Ware was in the way. After turning
over the carriage and breaking the king
I bolt, they were “headed” by a popular hat
| man, who found himself In adollma, for in
fact lie had the bull by the horns. Ho
turned them loose and they made fora
shady spot and there remained, notwith
standing the violent entreaties of the
owner to go forward. In the cool of the
evening they chewed the cud of satisfac
| tion and wore persuaded home.

THK END OF A TRAGEDY THE HLAYKU AT
LABOR.
Several days ago wc mad** mmtion of
the fact that Mr. Poindexter Cherry tiad
been shot and dangerously wounded by
two gentlemen named Cain. The result of
tlio shooting was tho death of Mr. Cherry
yesterday morning from his wounds. It
seems that tho Cain brothers hod been
renting land from Mr. Cherry on shares.
After tho corn got ripe they used some of
it for their table. Mr. Cherry claimed it
was without his consent, and they refus
ing to make reparation, he swore out a
warrant against them for lareency. The
trial ended in tho discharge of the Cain
brothers. Then ('horry ordered them not
to come on his plod*. Report says they
word advised by their attorneys that they
had the right to return, gather the crop,
and remain to the end of the year. Ac
cordingly they went bock upon the place,
and were notified by Cherry to leave. They
declined to leave, and armed themselves.
Cherry appeared on tho place, and when
found was shot down. Near him was
found his own gun discharged. The Cains
say he first fired on them, and they re
turned the fire, shooting him down.
We are told there were no witnesses to
the tragedy. The above is the report of
the case as we received it from a gentle
man living in Lumpkin. Mr. Cherry was
well thought of by those who knew him
best. The Cain that did the shooting used
to reside here, and was for a time em
ployed by Dr. Tuggle as a collecting agent.

Yesterday we chanced In a magistrate’s
office, ami gazed on an affecting scene.
Around a table covered with dusty law
txxiks, a few old peus, inkstand, Ac., sat
four young lawyers, a magistrate, a bailiff,
and the plaintiff and defendant. They
gazed at each other long and steadily, un
til someone proposed to settle the case
about to be Investigated. The proposition
was acceded to, and forthwith the defend
ant drew from his pocket the amount in
dispute and placed it in the hands of the
Court. The Court gravely announced the
case settled, as soon as the cost bill was
deducted. At this point of the pnx*eed
iugs, the bailiff looked happy, and tho
lawyers wise. Boon the cost was deduct
ed, and from thirty dollars tho thr<* law
yers aud the plantiff received six dollars.
The wheels of justice have to move, and
the litigants have to furnish the grease.
The plaintiff disposed of his six dollars at
a neighboring bar by treating the crowd.
The Diver Trade.
If the merchants of Columbus could have
been present yesterday morning when the
boat left the wharf, and aeon the immense
freight for the landings on tho river, and
in Florida, they would all foci more san
guine and hopeful of tho future. The boat
was loaded almost to the water's edge
with the groceries and dry goods shipped
from our stores; while on board were a
large quantity of human freight.
Columbus must control the river and
Florida trade. Atlanta, Mocon, Savannah
and Montgomery Are reaching out for it,
and offering extra inducements; but so
far in the season Columbus Is in tho as
eendcncy. It w*ll require a strict watch
on the part of our merchants to retain
this trade, but we express the Iwlief they
will be equal to the task.

men, whose name* are in every one’s mouth, aud
of whose live* every one is curious to ku-.w the
particular*. Great battle* have been fought aud
important siege* maintained, of which the de
tails are a* yet preserved only in the newspaper*
or in the traimient publications of the day, but
which ought now to take their place in perma- ■
nentand authentic history.
Iu preparing the present edition for the prens.
it has accordingly been the aim of the editors to j
bring dowu the information to the latest posiii- j
ble date*, and to fund*!} au accurate account of j
the most recent discoveries in science, of every ;
fresh production In literature, and ot the newest |
inventions iu the practical arts, as well as to give j
a suneiuct aud original record of the progress of j
political and historical event*.
The work ha* been begun arter long and care
ful preliminary labor, aud with the most ample
raMircn lor carrying it on to a auoceasful term
ination.
None of the orlgiual stereotype plat. * have)
been used, hut every page has been printed on
new type, loriulQg iu iact a uew Cyclopedia, with
the same plan aud coinpas* as its predecessor, ,
but with a far greater pecuniary expenditure, |
and with such improvements iu its composition j
as have been suggested by longer experience and |
enkargcil kuowludge.
XU© illustrations which aro introduced lor the
first time in the present edition have bceu added
not for the sake of pictorial effect, but to give
greater lucidity and lorce to the explanation* lu
the text. They embrace all branches of science
and of natural history, and depict the most I
famous and remarkable feature* of scenery,
architecture aud art. as well as the various pro-|
ceases of uicehaniea and manufacture*. I
Although intended for instruction rather than
einheiiahnitiut, no pains have been spared to in- ,
sure their artistic excellence; tho cost of their j
execution i* enormous, and it is believed they
will find a welcome reception ax an admirable
feature of the Cyclopedia, and worthy of it* j
high character.
This work 1* sold to HnlMicribcrs only, payable
on delivery of each volume. It will be completed |
iu sixteen large octavo volumes, each containing
about B<*> jage* fully illustrated with several
thousand Wood Engra\iuga. aud w ith numerous

Jordan's Joyous Julep.
A Specific for Neuralgia.
TESTIMONIALS.
PmanOMt Va., Jan. 20th, 1873.
John L. Jordan, Esq.—Dear Sir: So well plcaaed
am l with your Joyous Julep, that I hereby tes
i tify to the superior merit of your uneqnaled
. preparation tor Neuralgia. I *bal] esteem my
self happy should even one of tht worst ot ail
classes of sufferer* be h-d through me to take the
Julep. My wife ha* for ten (10J years been a mar
tyr to the most malignant and persistent neural
gic tortnre, without being able to find any relief
except from your preparation. She waa relieved
by the second dose a* per direction*, and has not
had a return of it for two months. To some 1
may seem strangely sanguine about your medi
cine. but I have * right to be ao. It ia not rea
sonable to Muppose this malignant malady would
have died of sheer exhaustion of capacity for
sustaining itself, and that too iu a minute and
the very minute your medicine vu taken, if so,
it is a most remarkable, simple coincidence, and
I prefer givmg th credit, iu your favor of the
best testimony rnan can ever have—experience.
, Vary truly yours,
JAMES T TOSH
Coi.CJtßrs, Jan nary 18,1*75.

I and used all the usual remedies with little sue-
I cess. I can with much confidence hope for s per-
I manent cure. It t* only two days since we began
i the use of it, and it le apparently of permanent
I benefit. Ysurs, with respect,
