A WOMAN WHOSE MOTHKU UHKL) TO CAUUY
U)VE LETTERS FOR LORD BYRON INHER
ITS AN ENOLISH FORTUNE.
Just, above tho Leighton depot, bo
tweuathe railroad and tho river, in
n small and comfortless look!ug hut,
lives George Bu worth, an English
man, who carries on a small truck
farm. His wife’s maiden name was
Barker, and her mother was one of
a family of live. Johu Holmes, who
died some eighteen month ago. is
one of the cousin's eld! io ■ "t this
family, and his prooen v t- to be di
vided among Itis eotisins. Mrs. Ua
wortli some time ago receive i nolill
eatiou that Johu was dead ami that
she was one of his heirs. With the
notification came a blank power of
attorney, which she signed and re
turned, and Inst January received her
portion of the proceeds from the sale
ot the i>ersoual property of the
Holmes estate. How much this share
amounts to site seems unwilling to
state, but says the personal property
brought about thirty thousand
pounds. The real property has not
boon settled yet, but it Is estimated at
from eighty" thousand pounds up
ward, or about four hundred thou
sand dollars. How much of this wiil
bo hor share Mrs. Haworth will not
give an estimate, but says she will not
need to work any more. The family
are considerably farther from poverty
now than their appearance and man
ner would Indicate. For this little
farm they ]>aid some $4,000, and eluim
tliut. it lias nearly doubled in value
in tho four years since they bought it.
Tho heiress appears to be about lifty
years of ago. With her husband she
came to this country in 1821, lived in
Bureau county, 111., fourteen years,
in Ohio four years, and since then on
tho truck farm at Leighton.
Mrs. Haworth attends market here
regularly in an old truck wagon, ami
for years has been seldom missed
from among the vem lots of produce.
Hor share of the Holmes estate is es
timated to be about $1)0.000. On other
subjects than that of her fortune site
is uuile communicative. Her moth
er’s family, site says, were near
neighbors of Lord Byron, and her
mother and the poet were school
mates, Byron and Mary Ohevvorth,
tile daughter of o>wealthy gentleman,
it will ho remembered, wore only pre
vented from marriage by tho stern
opposition of the lady's father. He
forbade Mary to see or eommunieate
with Byron; but Mrs. Haworth’s
mother used to carry the tender miss
ives back amt forth, and so n corres
pondence was for some time kept tip
without being suspected. But the
paternal Cheworth’s opposition pre
vailed, and Mary afterwards married
a man Who proved to be even more
wild and reckless than Byron, whose
wild and dissolute ways had been the
cause of Mr. Cheworth’s opposition.
Byron's poetical tribute to Mary will
be remembered by all. Mrs. Ha worth
also fells, with evident satisfaction,
that in her youth site knew Byron’s
daughter, Lady Lovelace, well.—

How few people are found without some indi

recognized ever since classic ages, when a sound

from alcoholic indulgence or too free use of to
