NMW ■ W*rl Culture. It is best to o*Vango wheat grown uu troeatone for that grown on lime' stone, and vioe versa. Smut in seed wheat may bo pre vented by washing the wheat in strong brine, and drying it in wood ashes, or air slaked lime. The more sprouting of the kernel is not fatal to tli seed, but heating to any considerable extent, either in the mow or in idles of threshed grain, is ruinous. Before sowing, tests were m il" by placing soil in a pan, and |d anting in It a known nnmberof kernels to tost the question of vitnlity. Avery large percentage failed to germinate under these very favorable circumstances. It is always best to exchange seed, if only for a'few miles, of any grain, but particularly wheat, which be comes as farmers enll ft, tired. This has been known by frequent practical experiments to make a difference of from two to ten bushels per acre in the yield. A careful selection of the most up proved varieties as seed, and a cer tainty that it is free from smut and foul seeds, is very important in the effort to grow a good wheat crop, if seed is old, or has been heated in the mow or bin, the germ maybe injured or distroyed, and in that ease will fail to pyrdttce a full and vigroous wrowth of plants. Seed wheat should be graded—that is, the small kernels should be in some way separated front the large and perfect ones, and only the best sown. This may be done by raising up the front end of tlie fanning mill, thus slanting the sieves in the direct ion of the blast of wind, and feeding the mill slowly, turning fast and blowing hard, driving halt or more of the grain over the sieves, and thus allowing only the plump, heavy ker nels to come forward of the mill for seed .—Rural I Vorlt l. • ♦ • Lot'ist AKA Sugar Chops Increasing. The sugar and molasses crops of Louisiana an; yearly increased in amount, though the prospects are not at all fair for them soon to reach the .inanities produced in ante-war times. The New Orleans I’iia' Currei d esti mates the sugar crop for 187t-’sat 11(1,- 867 hogsheads, against Hit,-PIS the pre ceding season, and the molasses crop at 11,51(1,828 gallons; while the grow ing crop never looked better, and is expected to exceed that of last year. As the country consumes now about •■l.OUo.ooojXHl pounds of sugar of all descriptions i.-r annum, and as an immense number of the llnest sugar estates in Cuba have been destroyed bv lire tiiis season, prices must rule high, and the United States cannot afford to see that struggle which so touches the pockets of her con sumers much longer continued. —• . How it Works--" Yen sir." said a gentlemanly looking man on Wash ington street, Saturday, "tile panic will have to come no preventing it. You see that tiinn jitst going away? Well, he has a bill against me, and he says if I will pay him that ho can pav some oue else, or, in other words, that if each man will pay what he owes, the other can pay, and that thus, under the rules of political economy, the tiling will travel around in a circle, lint lie didn't calculate that the tiling must have a bottom or the circle a break.
