What is described as ‘a very remark
uhle novel,’ by Belot, has been pub
lished lutely in Paris, and which is
said by the correspondent of Appleton
to be interesting as containing sun
dry eurious details reapeetlng the
houses for female eorrectin or femi
nine prisons of France. The work
forms the fourth volume of a series
entitled “Mundane Mysteries,'' and
hours the name af “line Maisou Can
trale des Femmes:” The details re
specting the regulations of such
houses have been carefully collected
from authentic sources, ami the work
abounds in curious information and
authentic anecdotes. Xu these pris
ons for women absolute silence forms
a portion of the punishment. Any
infraction of this enforced dumbness
is severely punished. Even during
recreation, which is merely n prome
nade in the yard, it.is forbidden to the
prisoners to communicate with each
other. The greatest favor that can be
eonforcod on them is to restore to
them, if but for a moment, their lib
erty of speech; yet it is said, they
rarely fail to abuse the privilege. As I
an instance it is related that when M. {
Bailie, the director of the most im
portant of these prisons, was, in lHiis,
Invited to the fetes at Oompiegne, he
was ipiestioned by the Empress res-1
pee ting certain details relative to the
regulations of the establishment of
which he was the director. On learn
ing the rule of enforced silence the
Empress suid, pityingly, "Poor wo
men! that is a severe punishment. I
desire that your sojourn here and my
conversation with you should be of
some service to them, and I request
you to permit your prisoners to con
verse freely together for twenty-four
hours.” OfeoiuseM. Bailie wasobligt
ed to give orders to that effect. At
once uuumborof private conversations
were organized. But one hour later
the conversations were changed into
arguments. Cries and screams sue
needed, heat grew hot and all these
unhappy creatures, habituated to si
lence, beeumedruukou with their own
words like a usually sober man whom
one glass of wine intoxicates. They
disputed, they quarrelled, theystruuk
each other, they fluug the earthen
vessels at each other’s heads. It be
came necessary to summon the turn
keys, and they were saluted with
cries of “Vive la lls|Hibli<|ue.“ That
we have been |(emitted to talk, the
prisoners had said among each other,
is a sign that great events have taken
place -the Empire must have been
overturned, and the Republic pro
claimed. Lot us salute his new rev
olution. It was hard to persuade
them that Napoleon Hi still occupied
tlie same throne of Franco, and that
it was to the intervention of the Em
press titai they owed the favor whicli
they had just abused.— Ercluauie.
