THE FAST MAIL TK UN*. An Initial Trip Over llir I'rniiHylvantn llallrimit. COI,. SCOTT STARTING Ills TRAIN WITH 23,000 NE'V YORK NEWSPAPERS, BIT NO MAILS —THROUGH TO CHICAUO IN TWEN TY SIX HOURS. The fust train awaited the uarty ut the depot. There was only a locomo tive, a newspaper ear, a pure white mail ear, ami the private ear, of the railroad officials. In the newspaper ear were over 25,000 copies of the morning newspapers to be delivered at Philadelphia or to bo flung out at the stations along the way. Be sides there were 3,500 copies to bo distributed in Cincinnati, Louisville, Chicago, and St. Louis. This repre sented the development of a business which eighteen mouths ago was ac commodated by a train which carried :s,ooo copies to Philadelphia. There are no compartments in the newspa per car, and at starting the floor was strewn knee deep with awkward packages, which the dexterous dis tributer piled into regular heaps rep resenting the villages and cities the train would pass. The postal ear was ready for its lirst trip, but was to go empty. It was built for a special pur pose, and all the devices which inven tion have designed are added to it. From the outer door hangs a long iron bar and hook which can be, when occasion requires, t hrown out to catch mail bags while the train is at full speed. Within are compart ments for the assorting of mail mat ter, so that it can be divided tirst ac cording to grand routes and thrown into large chutes, then subdivided into large boxes for cities and coun ties, and again into smaller divisous for minor places. A compartment at one end of the ear affords room for the book-keeper, who casts his ac counts of mails received and mails delivered, and strikes an exact bal ance when his journey is at an end. The postal car was carried merely as a trophy, for no mails are to be despatched by it until Thursday mourning. It marked, through, the officers said, the impatience of the company to adopt the now postal schemes, la the third car wore beds, which at half past 4 in the morning had a seductive look, a stove on which a pot of coffee was boiling, and a handsomely lifted drawing room. At ten minutes before 5 the train left the Jersey City depot, and ton minutes Inter 2,000 newspapers were thrown out upon the platfrom of the Newark station. Thenc-e to Phila delphia the train rolled on without a stop at a steady rate of forty-five miles an hour. The head-light of a freight train that followed the ex press from Jersey City was reflected upon the wet surface of the rails, and tied tlie two trains together by a double band of lire, but the connec tion wns drawn out longer and longer, and when it seemed about, to snap, the express train dashed around a sharp curve and rolled oil along, try ing to overtake the glare of its own headlight. A half hour out from Jersey City there was a shrill whistle of alarm and a hasty turning of brakes, but, without stopping the train in a mo ment regained its speed. A watch man had swung out his lantern wit h out, a light, and at a distance its color could not be seen. One hour out, the locomotive, at Monmouth Junction, took up water while at full speed from a trough between the rails, and in doing so threw out a cloud of spray on either side. “That’s what raises the devil with the tramps,” said a brakeman. "You see, the poor fel lows climb up to ride on the bumpers of freight oars, and as they are enjoy ing a snooze t tie engine ploughs through one of these troughs, and generally brings down n ducking on their heads.”—.Yen' York Ban. Theodore Tilton begins his lecture season at Port Jervis, with Ills new lecture “The Problem of Life.” His engagements will take him to a number of the interior cities and towns of New York, until the evening of the. 29t,h of September, when he will lecture in New York City, it being the same night appointed for the reception of Mr, Beecher in Brooklyn Academy. Mr. Tilton re ceives JUKI per night for his serviscs, and in the large cities more. His agents have received applications for J 0 nights, but he will not lecture more than 250 nights omitting Sun days and Christmas. Mr. Tilton will not refer in the remotest way to the scandal, and does not allow his most intimate friends to broach the sub ject. • ♦ • A Clear Kxm.anation. They were husband and wife, and as they stood before the Soldiers’ Monument she asked: “What’s that Agger on top?” “That’s a goddess,” he answered. “And what's a goddess?” “A woman that holds her tongue,” he replied. She looked side-ways at him and began planning to make a peach pie with tile pits in it for the beneilt of his sore tooth. T. S. SPEAR, No. 101 Broad St., Columbus, Ga. A false delicacy withholds a knowledge in regard to vio lation of Physiological laws, and life-wrecks shattered humanity, insanity, amt premature graves till the world. No race, nation or posi tion is exempt from the soul-destroying scourge. Sleepless nights, twitching ol the muscles, trembling of the limbs, poor appetite, easily dis turbed by noise or excitement, pimples and blotches on the face, desire to avoid company, pe culiar sensation over the whole body are among the difficulties which attend this complviut. The Cordial Balm of Syricum and Tonic Pills will in a short time so cleanse the blood and soothe tne nerves, and restore strength to the body, as to make life enjoyable and happy. EPILEPSY OH FITS. No other remedy will cure Epilepsy or Fits so quickly as the Cordial Halm of Hyrieum ami Tonic Pills. Kidney Diseases ami many other difficulties are cured by the use of the Cordial Halm of Syrup and Tonic Pills. If the watery portions of our food are not pass ed off, they must, when retained in the system, produce serious difficulties. Language fails when attempting to describe the suffi rings of per sons whose kidneys are out of order ; gravel, hack-ache, inflammation of the bladder and of the delicate membranes of the urinary organs are the result It the water is not regularly and properly carried through the kidneys. The Cordial Balm of Syricum is effectual in promoting the secretion of the wa tery and nnuutntious portions of the food, and in carrying it off by its proper outlets. Whatever portion of our food is unserviceable should be passed off in the water in sweat, and from the bowels. If these useless mutters are retained disease is sure to follow, for then the blood becomes poisoned with the impurities which should pass off in their proper channels. The Cordial Balm of Syricum and Tonic Pills is a powerful cleanser of the blood; it starts the liver ami kidneys into active operation, and acts on all the secretions of the body. It carries off old and foul elements in the blood, which are slow and sure death if allowed to remain in the system. ID XT TJJNT BLUMIi^SS. THE COBDIAL BALM OF BYBI CUM AND TONIC FILLS is the only remedy that has ever proved by prac tical experience u hem tit to tliose who suffer from over-indulgence in Alcoholic Liquors, it com pletely destroys the tastes for them, ami restores the victim to health and vigor. A single trial will prove it to be Inst what it is recommended to be. MOrtPIIIKTE. THE COBDIAL BALM OF SYItl- CUM AND TONIC FILLS is a sure cure for the habitual use of Mor phine, so extensively used in this country as a Htimulunt. It will in a very short time com pletely destroy the desire for tnis narcototic. We have many testimonials front the first fami lies in Europe ami America, who testify to its efficacy. OPIU M. The alarming increase of the use of this most pernicious drug as a stimulant, by male ami fe male, aud its peculiar effects, completely destroy ing the digestive apparatus and shattering the nervous system, effeminating and debasing the mind, renders The Cordial Balm of Syricum and Tonic Pills of inestimable value, as it completely destroys all desire for this most baneful drug, ami restores the nerves to a perfectly healthy state, even In eases where opium has been used in large quanti ties and for a number of years. [Davenport Democrat, Davenport, lowa.] How few people are found without Home iudi catioiiM of nervous disease. Boston, .July 15. 1H74. Dr. G. E. Loth nop: Dear Bir—l beg to inform you that I have been troubled with Nervous Debility for the. past twelve years, and have been unable to obtain any relief until I purchased a Kickage of the Cordial Balm of Hyricuin at Mr. uucan's drug store, corner ol Leverett and Green streets. The benefit derived from the use of one package *o far exceeded my expectations that I address you this for publication, that other suffers may avail themselves of the oppor tunity to fx: cured. Your* truly, John Tuttle, Boston P. O. Lancaster, May 14, 1873. Dn. G. E. Loth nor: Dear Sir—l have used up all the Cordial Balm of Hyrieum and Tonic Pills that you let me have when you first undertook my cure, and I am glad to be able to inform you that, thus far, 1 have derived greater benefit from it than from any other medicine I have ever taken in my life. I sleep better, and daily go about my work without hesitation or fear. My nerves are getting steadier every day, and if I continue to improve as fast as I have done for the last few mouths since I have been taking yonr medicine, I have no doubt but that J shall soon agaiu be a well man. With many thanks for the good yon have done me, I enclose $25 for which please send me as before, five more bottles of the Hyrieum and Pills, as I intend to keep np the use of them until fully cured, as I believe I shall be.
