IHg DAILY TIMES, Columbna, WEDNESDAY KEPTKJIBEK 22. 1H75. wbamca HiSSS] ll. WIIXIAMII. ) LARGEST DAILY OIROULATIOH In Vtiy nwd Wuhurh, i;x r elections—Ohio au<l lowa Ofctober 12. • -- Boston has had unothcr million dollarh Are. Micawmehu In bUhlnoHS—men who do not advertise. A Louisiana farmer has succeeded In raising a crop of tea. Col. Mount Is going to open a luw office in Washington. Ohkecc will participate In the Cen tennial Exhibition; Thk friends of Gov. Allen, of Oliio, claim his election by 30,000 majority. I n b W* * NkW Yohk, Maine, Maryland and Nebraska declare for hard money and reform. Farms from 100 acres to 600 uores can he bought almost anywhere in Georgia at cheap rates, and on long time If good security be given. EtiGßAMALia— “War consists in ac complishing some direct result.” "War is cruelty and you can not refine it."— General Sherman. JgmmsoN Davis recontly Informed a reporter of the Bt. Louis Republi can that during his whole life ho had never delivered a written speech. — • Mbs. J. E. B. Stuart, the widow of the noted Confederate general of cav alry, has become an instructor in the Southern Female College, Richmond, Virginia. — - • ♦ • Thk Government of the United States puts a tariff of sixty per cent, on foreign silks. The bulk ocoupled by a thousand dollars’ worth of rich silks is so small, that the temptation to make six hundred dollars by smug gling it in free of duty, is very great. Here is how shy Ham Bowles of the Hprlngfield Republican puts its: “If the people go on voting Democratic State and Congressional tickets in this careless way, what is to become of the great Republican party? They should think of this.” Church Music in New York. —The largest annual salary paid a choir organist in New York city is $2,500, and the largest paid a singer Is *1,500; while the' total amount paid by the churches for tlioir choirs Is not loss than hair a million dollars a year. Prince Goutschakofk thinks that the solution of the Eastern question will not be immediate, hut will event ually consist in the granting of auto nomy to Bosnia and Herzegovina under Archduke Salvador or Server Tacha. The New York Democracy have de clared for hard money. In the .Syra cuse Convention the declaration against repudiation was greeted with a hearty outburst of applause. “No centralization” also met with high favor. - If Secretary Bristow waits for gold Vo coma down to 100 or 108 before ho begins to make payments In silver he will probably wait some time. If silver payments depend on gold being kept at this price, it Is as great folly to attempt it now as it is to force speeie payments by Jan. 1879. The Nashville American calls Ham Bard u tuneless lyre. But Samuel is used to that sort of compliments. The only objection that wo have to the conclusion of the American is as to his orthography. The final word of the first sonteuco is not properly spelled. A National University.—Some of the New York newspapers are dis cussing the propriety of the govern ment founding a National University at Washington. The Herald in its continents upon this pithily says: What might have been impossible to an Adams would be entirely feasible to a Grant. Professor Leroy Broun, of the University of Georgia, is to be math ematical professor in Vanderbilt Uni versity at Nashville, Tenn. His ap pointment completes tho faculty of the institution, which will open Oc tober 4. The faculty of tho University of Georgia have a faculty of losing tho best men belonging to the faculty. A great discovery of sulphur is made on Rabbit Hole Mountain, on the Central Pacific R. R. in Humboldt eouuty, Nevada. Tho mountain is a mass of sulphur, and, so far yields 92 to w> per cent, of the pure article. It is shipped to Oarsou and Han Fran cisco mints at the rate of 10 to 20 tons u week, and is used iu the manufac ture of sulphuric acid. It is pre ferred to the article Imported from Sicily and Japan, and also by farmers making a wash for sheep. We would like to ask our old friend Dr. H. If this discovery ought not to cheui>en commercial fertilizers. In alluding to the efforts of Jay Gould to get control of the Western Union Telegruph Compuny, the New York Herald thus diseourseth ; Now to put such a man in charge of our telegraphs is to give him a dangerous control over our business and commerce, our private, political and social life. The telegraph sys tem Cis only another phase of the postal system. It Is the improved postoffb-e. The time must come when we will have to consider whether it is not necessary for the good of the people that the govern ment should control this great ma chine. The surest way to bring that time about is to allow it to fail into the hands of a rapacious aud datper ate gambler like Jay Gould. The alms and purposesof Republi cans are as pure and worthy now as they ever were.— Boston Aerertiser. Just about. Boston Post, OI K HIHTKM OP ■•I)PI!I,.tK KIM PA TIO*. The Philadelphia Press complains that, children are sent to school when too young, and deprecates the blun der of allowing them to bring the school home with them. It says: “When the doors of the school house close In thooftornoon upon the school children, they should literally close out from them all that pertains to school until tho opening next morn lug. A teacher should be a teacher, not simply a mere hearer of recita tions. Lessons should be taught und learned at Bcbool—never at home. The teacher has no right to Impose upon parents the most annoying part of her work. Hhe has no right to take from tho child a single moment of tho few hours It has out of school.” Wo do not know that we ever road any suggestions more pertinent than the above. If there be an evil in our social life that demands reform, it Is that of the undue importance given to mental training in comparison witli that accorded to physical devel opment. Our great men very often have illustrated ttie truth of this as sertion. Andrew Johnson learned to rend and write after he had attained his majority-; and many of our most eminent lawyers, merchants aud rep resentative men passed but a few years in tho school-room. Life is itself but a school, and there is but a given capacity in each individual to work out the problem of life. "Menu mna in eorpore nano” was a maxim current among the ancients, and the thousand years which have lapsed since then have not reversed the flat proclaimed to every thinking mind by the laws of nature. When we send j our children to school at the tender age of live years, at which time they ought to be chasing butterflies and working their little muscles into con dition fit for the great, demands to be made upon them in the battle of life, we war agaiust nature. All animal life hi similar, and no one is so insane as to eon line a young colt so that it can not take the exercise which na ture prompts, and expect healthful results. Next to tlie mistake of sending children to school too young, is that of confining them too much to this sedentary life after they commence. Every man, nearly, can recollect the time wlicn, for having "missed his lesson,” the little boy was “kept in” at dinner, and it no better result attended the after recitation lie wus “kept in” until the shudes of twilight i made it Impossible to see the letters in his book. Here are laid the seeds of dyspepsia-tlie great American malady which, if not checked then, clogs the machine all througli life, In spite of frequent oiling. Tlie boy becomes a proficient in repeating Greek, Latin, and Belles Lettres—as a parrot would -but the listless eye, the depressed look, the premature weakness, suggests that the great maxim of the Latins has been utterly Ignored. Is this system rational ? is it desirable ? “Tho child is father to the man.” The child, who carried his books home at, nightfall to study them after supper in order to lie ready for tlie recitations to commence at 8 o’clock the following day, grad ually grows up, becomes an adult, witli tlie conviction that “life is earnest,” without allowing himself *the relaxation necessary to perfect health. The business cares which have burdened him during the day, he refuses to leave in his counting room, and bears them with him to his fireside, where his wife and children ] insensibly feel tlie effect of this i depression. Our system is false, and should be j remedied. Wo work at improper | hours; our children attend school at j an improper age; aud tlie result is premature ago, a constant hurry, and j a burning of the taper of life at botli ends. - - - - - (nllioriUn. The following from a Han Francisco exchange gives the clue to the won derful prosperity of California far mers. It Is this: Only the richest soils are worked, in California. Now let any one reflect upon how prosperous our farmers would bo if they only worked rich land, and if, owing to i free labor, only rich land or Valleys ! had been cleared, and lie will at once realize that Georgia can be made as rich a mine of wealth to the farmor as is California. Owing to slavery, the profit of wliioh consisted in the in crease of slaves, not in llie product of their labor, lands have been “cleared” that never ought to have beeu cleared. Gradually the small farmers will buy j portions of ricli plantations, and I poorer lands will bo returned to na ture’s recuperative process. Then ! will our farmers prosper. Wo can not reiterate too often the truth that wo feed twice as many mules and hands as we ought, aud cultivate five I times as many acres as ought to be j cultivated In cotton, or crops that de- j maud continuous clean culture: A test was next made with tho ee- j reals, which proved equally satisfae- I tory. Average crops are harvested in nearly all the little valleys where theronad been u planting, from fif teen to thirty bushels of wheat, ami a still better yield of barley being cut from the acre. In consequence, de population has been arrested, and a reflux fide commenced, which augurs well for the stability and future pros perity of many sections which were at one time thinned out, and pre sented all the unsightly evidences of decay. No parts of the State are bet ter adapted to vineyards than the foothills below the snow-belt, and wine making is beiug pursued in ! t hese regions as a profitable industry. This year the accounts from these red soils are generally of a cheering nature, mid tlie discovery of their ca pability for vegetable growth gives I assurance that even though the mines were nearly worked out, the country is still rich in promise to the ! frugal and industrious farmer. A reporter of tlie Constitution j called at the Executive Department to ascertain the facts. Col. Alexan-; der informed us that Judge Johnson 1 probably intends to resign and likely Sir. Crawford might bo appointed. Atlanta Constitution. Col. Crawford has received his com mission. He state emphatically that Judge Johnson has resigned, and Col. Crawford has been appointed to suc ceed him. THK TIMES: WEDNESDAY MORNING, SEPTEMBER 22, 1875. Mevrrdy Join,.on Hjiraka, The concluding portion of Hon. Roverdy Johnson’s address to the Conservative Democrats of Baltimore in favor of Carrol and Reform Is ns j follows: It Is, therefore, tlie clear duty of every Marylander, who loves his State and his country, to give no vote which shall encourage l he party now in power in Washington. It seems to mo to be most extraordinary that any reflecting man should fail to per ceive that a continuance In power of the present dominant party is not only pregnant witli danger to our material interests, but to the very forms of government under which, for so many years, we have lived in prosperity and peace. Do then, as I am sure you will, roll up such ma jorities for your candidates as was re cently done bv your Democratic as sociates in California for theirs, thus carrying dismay and assuring a sig nal defeat to the present dominant party and satisfying tlie good men of all parties that our Institutions will be preserved from farther encroach ment and enlightened liberty main tained. • California Coffee Culture. —The results of recent experiments in cof fee culture in California conclusively prove that coffee Can be raised in every portion of that Htate where the soil is congenial. Hnow does not ap pear to have any material injurious effect on the plant. California plants produce twenty-two shoots, while those of Europe produce but one. The soil also is t hought to be more fa vorable, as, unlike that of Europe- j an countries, it needs no irrigation, j The following explains the general term enr-load : Seventy barrels of suit, 70 of lime, 90 of (tour, 60 of wkiskey, 200 sacks of flour, 6 cords of soft wood, j 18 to 20 head of cattle, 50 to 60 head of | hogs, 80 to 100 head of sheep, 9,01 K) feet of solid boards, 17,000 feet of sid ing, lii.ooo feet of flooring, 40,000 shingles, one-half less of hard lum ber, one-fourth less of green lumber, one-tenth of joists, scatling, and all other large timber, 340 bushels of wheat, 800 of corn, GBO of oats, 400 of barley, 350 of flaxseed, 360 of Irish po tatoes, 360 of sweet potatoes, 1,000 bushels of brand. A heavy box car ! weight about ln.ooo pounds. When legislation (lermits expan sion, and, despite it, contraction en sues; when, instead of adding a pos sible Issue of nearly one hundred millions, tho natural workings of trade gradually produce contraction, the assertion that the industries of the country are languishing because of a scarcity of our currency for busi ness purposes does not convince peo ple who do their own thinking.— .itemph is.
