Williams, near t his place heard one of his wife’s ducks making a noise as if something was after it; he got out. of bed ami went to where she was, but could not see or hear anything. Ho went the second time, but with the same re sult. He told his wife he guessed the ducks had gone crazy. Next morn ing he went to where the old duck was sitting uiuin her eggs, under a brush pile and, imagine his astonish ment, he saw a large black snake coiled up under the duck. His snake ship having swallowed twelve eggs, Mr. Williams cut his head off, out it open, took the eggs out and placed them under the duck, and eleven of that dozen eggs hatched Mr. Wil liams’s word is as good as his bond. Owen (California) A'eirs. The throo greatest grain produc ing countries in the world are Itussla, the United States and France, in the order named. The satisfies of 1870 show that liussia produced 4(>o,(kh),ooo bushels of wheat, the United States •286,000,000, arid France about the same. Russia exported one-eight hof her grain, the United States one fourth and France none. The Uni ted States, however, grows an enor mous amount of corn, which the oth ers do not. It is likely, also, that Australia will soon rival the two last named countries, or at least when her land is more generally taken up and cultivated. South Australia alone announces this year that she has 200,000 tons of surplus wheat 45,- 000 tons of which have already been exported, while the remainder is ready for shipment. T. S.
