Rice Culture In tlie Mouth. From the New York Bulletin, 34 iust.f Though feotton ts the mainstay or the South and the chief source of its prosiHirtty, the rice tnido is of uo lit tle importance, end ought not to bo overlooked In reckoning the agricul tural wealth of that section. This trade is steadily progressing, and promises well for the future. Taking Louisiana, for example, the follow ing statistics show a gradual increase since 1804: Uhls. Uhls. 1864-65 9,800 1870 71 37,500 1805 (16 11,000 1871 73 30,000 1866- 30,450 1873 73 53,000 1867- 31,600 1873 74 90,000 1868 09 9,000 187-1 75 101,000 1869 70...... 5,800 1875-70,e5t.300,000 Thus we have a steady improve ment, which is most gratifying, es pecially when it is considered that the yield before the war was so in considerable that no statistics were kept. Bnt the planters evidently do not mean to rest here. During' the present season, which is classified as that of 1875 6, there lias been a much larger acreage planted than ever be fore, and, with favorable weather for harvesting, which lias already commenced, it is given as a reasona ble estimate that the yield will reach 200,000 barrels. To show to what extent some of the plunters in Louisiana are engag ed in this culture, it may bo stated ■that one grower who lias control of three plantations in the parishes of St. Bernard and Plaquemines, lias about B,ouo acres ia rice. It is sta ted us a fact that notwithstanding some drawbacks, the cultivation of this staple is fully as remunerative as any other crop, if not more so. Yet we are told that thousands of rich bottom lands, entirely suitable for the cultivation of rice and easy of irrigation, are now lying idle in that State. Much depends upon the river, as too much of an overflow or too low water, never fails to have a marked effect on tho yield. In 1874, if it had not hud boon for the floods, where 90,500 barrels were harvested, there might have been (according to plan ters’ estimates.) 150,000 barrels. The planters, however, lost uo money that season, fair prices repaying them for their time. The parishes engag ed in rice growing, are Plaquemines, St. Bernard, Orleans, Jefferson, St. Charles, St. John, St. James, Ascen sion, Assumption and Lafourche. St. Mary is ulso trying its hand at it in tlie lied Biver bottom lands. The Carolinas and Georgia are also making steady progress in tlie same field of industry, but not so rapidly as Louisiana. The enormous destruc tion of property in those States dur ing the war. By which rice planta tions suffered severely, threw the in dustry many years behind, and caus ed a falling off in the annual yield of fully 125,000 casks. Before the war, theeropin the Carolinas and Geor gia reached from 189,000 to 210,000 casks eacli season, tun variation be ing due to favorable or unfavorable weather. The yield in the Atlantic States during the past live years has been as follows: 4871. 1573. IKM. *.74, Casks. Cusks. (’asks. (’auk*. Georgia 11.200 19.874 23,700 2*2,000 H, Carolina. 4 2,272 47.240 Ju.200 N. Carolina. .*4OO 000 Total 54,602 67.714 <>7,380 72,200 There is considerable less acreage in rice in the Carolinas and Georgia than before the war. When a lice field is left uncultivated fora num ber of years, as during the rebellion, it takes much time to get it in good yielding order again. A steady im- j proveraent, however, from now on may be looked for. The Carolinas, for the season just ending, have pr<> duced about the same as last year, and during the season about to begin | a handsome increase is expected. Thenj, hits been a good business in rice doing in this market lately, and prices have been firm at quotations a little above those current at this time last year. Rome small lots of the new crop have arrived at Charleston and New Orleans and have brought , full prices. j T. S. SPEAR, No. 101 Broad St., Columbus, Ga. Language fulls when attempting to describe the sufferings of per sons whose kidneys are out of order ; gravel, back-ache, inflammation of the bladder and of the (ielicate membranes of the urinary organs are the j result if the water is not regularly and properly carried through the kidneys. The Cordial Balm of Syricum is effectual in promoting the secretion of tho wa tery and uunutritious portions of the food, aud in carrying it off by its proper outlets. Whatever portion of our food is unserviceable should be paused off in the water In sweat, and from Hie bowels.
