One of these gentlemen, who tins recently returned from a trip for Thistle Uros. & Cos., of Boston, did not show a very largo exhibition of orders to balance the liberal expense account allowed him by the firm, and Mr. Thistle, after looking over his re turn, said: “Mr. Rataplan, lam afraid you do not approach the dealer in the right way. I used to l>e very successful in this line. Now just suppose me to be Mr. Higher, of Sellout, 111., and show me the way you introduce the house,” Accordingly Rataplan stepped out of the counting room, and returned, hat in hand inquiring: "Is Mr. Higher in V" "That’s my name,” said Mr. This tle, urbanely. “My name is Rataplan, sir; I rep resent the house of Thistle Hros. A Cos., of Boston. (Thistlein his char acter of Western merchant, here arose and offered the salesman a chair, and expressed a pleasure at seeing him.) lam stopping with Overcharge at theSticken House, and have a line unspoken lot of samples, which I should like to show you; I think 1 can offer you some special advantages, etc.” And Mr. Rataplan delivered him self of a neat speech iu professional style. “Very well, very well,” said This tle, “I don’t see but that you under stand the way to get customers,’ “Excuse me Mr. Thistle,” said Rat aplan. “I am afraid you do not un derstand the style of the Western merchants, just how. Suppose you change places with me, and repeat this rehcrsal V” “Certainly,” said Thistle, and incit ing up his hat he stepped out. Re turning, he found Rataplan, with ids chair tipped back, hat cocked fierce ly over his riirht eye, his heels plant ed on Thistle’s polished desk, and a lighted cigar between his teeth. Thistle looked a little staggered, but nevertheless lie commenced : "Is Mr. Higher iu?” “Yes. he is,” responded Rataplan, blowing a cloud of pure Conneticut into Thistle's eyes. "Who in— -are you?” “I represent the house of Thistle, Hros. A: C 0.,” said the astonished em ployer, coughing, out about a quart of smoko from Ids throat. "The blazes you do. Arc you one of that concern?” “No sir, lam not, said Mr. This tle.” “Well, it’s d-d lucky you are not, for I’ve had two drummers to one customer in my store for the last two months, aud if I could get hold of one of the blasted fools that sent ’em out this time, I'm darned if I would’nt boot, him clean out of the town of Sellout.” "That'll do, Mr. Rataplan.” said Thistle. “I have no doubt you did the best you could for the interest of your house. Trade Is a little dull.” Er ■hniirje.
