Yesterday at sun down the Hebrews in
tills city, and those everywhere else, re
paired to their respective places of wor
ship to commence the celebration of the
Feast of Itosh Hashana. This means the
civil year SG3G of the creation of the world
An Interesting feature of the services is
the blowing of Shofar in the morning of
the iirst and second day of the seventh
mouth of Tisllri, as commanded in tlw
Peutateueh. These days tills year cor
respond to the noth of Bepteml>er and tin*
Ist of October. The solemnities of the
feast are greatly enhanced on these days
by the fact that Israelites who are very
lax and indifferent in the observance of
Jewish precepts and customs through the
whole year, join their more faithful breth
ren in strictly abstaining from all secular
labor on these days of spiritual reflection.
We will also state that while Israelites of
other countries, as well as those in the
Holy Land, strictly observe tho tradi
tional two days, Itosh Hashana, the so
called progressive reform congregations
of this country keep but one day. To-day
business will be suspended by all of the
Jewish faith in the city, and the time will
be devoted to spiritual contemplations
and religious exercises.
A reporter of our paper encountered
one of tho numerous army of “poor but
respectable” men who had no visible
means of support. The foEowihgnoiloquy
ensued:
Reporter Are you in favor of inflation ?
Inflation! Creation! Of course I am.
Reporter But what limit would you
give to the movement V
Respectability I would make it as Illim
itable as tho universe, sir. i would dint ri
bnto It like a prince; and I would pay all
my debts Jlrnl thing I i want to carry a
packet-full at a time, and not care a cent
whether a breakfast costs one dollar or
one hundred dollars.
Reporter—But how would you make this
illimitable currency ultimately good ?
Respectability “Sufficient unto the clay
is the evil thereof.”
We left him, wondering which extreme
was worse the evils that wo now endure,
or t hose which we seek but know not. We
were dazed by that “poor but respectable”
man.
