TMK FARM.
itormtia corn.
Clean out orib thoroughly, and
|>alnt over the inside with coal tar, it
weevils are troublesome. Gather
oorn as soon as it is dry, to prevent
rotting and destruction by vermin.
Feed very economically note, that
you may bo able to food more liber,
ally next May and .Tune, The dispo
sition to bo lavish and extravagant is
very great on a (Southern farm, when
the crons have just been gathered
one feels so rich, after lmviug been
pinched ami stinted for months.
PEA CROP.
An abundant supply of seed, at
least, should bo gathered. They
will bo needed both for planting the
next crop ami Tor sowing on wheat
and oat stubble. Don’t trust to buy
ing them "in town” they will be
source and high, money not over
plentiful, and you will not get as
many as you ought to have. Mow or
pull up the vines, thresh out the
peas, store them away in a 000 l cel
lar, and put away the vines for for
age, or use them for litter in the
stalls, and the land will still get the
benefit of them. Krerybotly admits
the value of the pea us a fertilizer,
and yet how few make full use of it.
SWEET POTATO.
Dig before a hard frost, and if pos
sible iu dry. cloudy weather. Han
dle carefully, put in old-fashioned
“hills" or banks, leave an “air-hole,”
and cover lightly for some weeks,
aud vh in the weather gets cold pile
on the dirt at least <m foot thick.
When the “sweat” is over, close "air
hole,” aud be sure that the potatoes
are kept from getting net.
FOIIDEB AND HAY.
As the stacks of these have had
ample time to cure, fodder and hay
should be housed before the winter
rains set in. During long rainy
spells, water is almost sure to pene
trate the stacks, and cause mere or
less damage.
STOCK.
As pastures begin to fail, com
mence at once feeding stock. Keep
them fat, if you wish to winter them
easily auil economically. Animals
kept fat all the time will eat less in
the long run. Have hogs fat and
ready for the knife when the first
“hog-killing spell” in November
comes. The meat will cure better j
than if killisl later, and the corn crib i
will be decidedly the gainer thereby.
—Southern Cultivator.
It was the Fourth National Bank
of Chicago that stepped down and
out last Saturday and hurried on
toward the glorious haven of specie
payments.
