FOUR HUOTH AND A LITTLE BLOOD.
Yesh’rday there occurred on Broad
Rtroet a shooting affair, in which two
young men of this city engaged, and which
created groat excitement at the time. For
tunately, the results were not a* aerloua
as It Hocum natural that they should have
been.
PARTIES ENGAGED.
The parties engaged in the difficulty
wero Mr. LeGrand Wright and Mr. James
Barbour. It seem* that they were only
slightly acquainted, and tho origin of the
affair appearw somewhat involved In mys
tery. From the best source* of Informa
tion at our command, wo gathered the fol
io g facts:
FACTS AH GATHERED.
It seems that Mr. Barbour bad heard of
tho arrest of some citizens at Seale, Als.,
by United States Revenue officers, and
had said that “some of tho boys” up here
would also be arrested. Barbour is re
ported to lavo said that Wright had a
warrant for him, and if ho presented it, he
would kill him.
The day before the shooting, Barbour
went into Wright’s office, at Bedell A Go's
store, and commenced to talk alxmt him
to Mr. Garrett, of tho firm of Bedell A Cos.
Some words passed between Mr. Garrett
and Mr. Barbour, when the latter loft the
store. When Mr. Wright came in Mr.
Garrett told him of Mr. Barbour’s visit
and what he had said about him.
THREATS.
Yesterday about two o’clock Barbour
again went to Wright’s office, lie and
Wright entered into conversation, when
the subject of what Barbour had said to
Mr. Garret* was brought up. Wright
callod up Mr. George Andrews, who was
standing in the store, and osk<*d him to
witness what was said. Wright told Bar
bour that ho was armed and spoke of
what ho bad said about him tho day be
fore, tolling him that it was as good a
time as they could find to settle the mat
ter. Barbour used some approbious epi
thets to Wright and both men caught
each other. Barbour but his hand in
Wright’s collar and a little scuffle ensued.
Barbour drew a large single-barrel pistol,
(what is known as a horse pistol,) and
Wright drew a revolver. As soon as
Wright drew his weapon ho reached
around Mr. Andrews, who was between
him and Barbour, and llred, the ball
hitting Barbour in his right hip, but in
flicting only a slight wound. Andrews
was soon out from between the antago
nists and then Barbour fired at Wright,
rnissinffkhim. Wright then pulled trigger
again, while very close to Barbour, but
tiie cartridge failed to explode. By this
time Wright was |on the edge of the side
walk and fired again at Barbour, who was
still in tho store, but missed him. He then
stepped back a fow feet ami told Barbour
not to advance towards hirn.
H EVA RATED.
By tills time a large crowd bad gather
ed, and they rushed in and seized both par
ties. Barbour did not know bo was struck
until a bystander inform*! him. Both par
tios were arrested, but both soon gave
ball and were released. Barbour’s wound
is very slight. Wright was not touched
and it was impossible to discover where
the ball from Barliour’s pistol took effect.
But one fact is shrouded in mystery, and
that is “did the first shot come from the
wall.”
AFFAIR REGRETTED.
The affair is to be regretted, as it dis
turbed the peace of the community and
may add to the fame of Columbus as a
place for violence. We give the tacts as
we heard them from by-stanoors soon
after tho difficulty. A preliminary trial
will probably be had in a few days, and
the full facts developed. In this as in
all affairs of the kind there are rumors
of all kinds and it is difficult to make the
account of the circumstances accord with
every individual version.
Mr. Wright is a highly respected
man, was iu his office nt the time of the
attack, his headquarters being with
Mers. Bedel, A Cos. Mr. Janies Barbour
we learn, is not seriously hurt, and will
shortly recover BThe exact origin of the
difficulty no one knows.

Camp Meeting.
The largo Central Camp Meeting began
at the grounds, throe miles from Geneva,
last Thursday night. Great preparations
had been made by the px>plo of Talbot
and adjoining counties for the success of
meeting, and every possible arrangement
was made for the accommodation of all
who should attend. We have not yet heard
how the meeting opened, but we presume
it is well attended, of course. A large
number of ministers from all parts of the
district will necessarily attend. The Civ
lumbus Methodist preachers will be there
at different stages of tho meeting.
We believe a large number of the people
of Columbus ami the vicinity would like to
go down Sunday, if there wore any means
of transportation over the railroad. The
authorities must have determined not to
run any special train to-morrow, ns no no
tice has boon given. It would have paid
to have run the train if halt-fare tickets
hail been furnished. We will all have to
go to church at homo to-morrow, while
more fortunate mortals who have plenty
of leisure have gone on down to the camp
meeting, and are tenting there to enjoy its
many pleasures ami tie refreshed by the
recreations of country life for a few days.
To-morrow will be a day long to be re
membered by the country people for milt's
around the camp ground.

There is a large number of young men
from all parts of the neighboring country
in the city, who are seeking employment,
some of them in particular branches of
business, but most of them asking for
anything honorable, by which they cun
make a livelihood. Very few of these
young men succeed in obtaining perma
nent position*, for almost every utcixdiaut
has just as many clerks as he wants.
New establishments do not spring up
very fast here and it is much more difficult
for young men to work themselves into
pofdtion than in cities that are growing
faster. Wo heard a merchant say yester
day that he had had no less than fifty ap
plications for positions in the last ten
! days. Most of the applicants are boys
and young men from farms, who have
| grown weary of that life and long for the
j change which the excitement of city life
I brings.

very Important In a town of this size.
The great New York houses have lately
inado enormous sales of prints and dry
goods. The gnjatest sale of prints ever
made In America was concluded at the es
tablishment of If. B. Olafin A Cos., in New
York, on Friday last. In connection with
some sales which were made on tho pre
vious day, over seven thousand oases of
the most oelobrated brands wero disposed
of at prices lower than ever made before,
ranging from 5% to cents, the terms
being net sixty days, or two per writ, off
ten days. Every Htato In the South and
Southwest was represented at the sale.
This enormous amount of calico is beyond
tho comprehension of an ordinary indi
vidual. Those seven thousand cases con
tainer! enough prints to clothe thousands
and tens of thousundH of female forms.
Where In the world are they going to get
women enough to put all that calico
around?
Fine Nchiiul,
By reference to an advertisement in an
other column, tho public will learn that
we are to have another school in our
midst, and of a superior order.
Rev. Mr. Parker, pastor of the Girard
Baptist Church, is tho teacher. His meth
od of teaching is entirely dissimilar from

of the latest ways of teaching. He pays

Cotton.
Atlanta reporters are interviewing cot
ton men in that city to find their opin
ions as to whether the staple is apt to
go up, or down, or remain where It now
is. With not a single exception the gen
tlemen whose opinions are published say
they do not think cotton Ims yet reached
its lowest point, unices a fair demand
ran lie had for cotton fabrics. They seem
to fear thatj it will f go lower and still
lower, until it gets to a point from which
it must rise. We nail 11% cents tolerably
