l**Ul In ilie *urauc Houk. 't&L*s<cieiiliflc Aqmrtnaa sajra: TmWwanother proSnSHriuMe or in fant mortality to which wo wish now to direct special attenion, nuiualy, the patent nursing bottle. Itoonsists of a rubber tube, one cud of which is held in the child’s mouth; the other end, passed Uifough aoo(k, is attach ed to * alsf *)d which <lr*oeiwis to the belusti iifti boa !-■ of so called milk. We niight write a column on the dangers that reside in the milk, unless special care lies been taken to obtain it fresh or by suitably diluting our condens 'd mlik. Hut tlds dan ger is well known, and our business is at present with the bottle, or rather its dirty tube, which should never be used more than oneo, then thrown away and a uew one bought. Even when new, these white tubes, impreg nated us they are with oxide of zinc, ura not uuobjeetuble. Tar worse are they when saturated with sour tnilk, germsof putrefaction, decay and dis ease. Some of these ohild-murdering Yankee inventions have reached Her lin, and have called fourth the fol lowing from a practising physician ot that city : “The suppos ’d advantage ofThq£e bottles oouslsts in tiiis, that they can bo placed beside the infant in bed, while other bottles must lie held In the hand all the time. What seusible mother would leave her child with a bottle without watching it? The danger of the bottle consists in this, that it is absolutely impossible to cleansest. When sucked on, lit tle particles of milk become attached to the tube and cork; these curdle and soon turn sour. If some of this deposit be placed under a microscope, we see innumerable bacteria, organic beings which indicate decomposition nnd decay. At every meal the child draws in thousands of these germs. The decontiKising process acts upon what it finds in the mouth, esophag us and stomach, and the result is diarrhea.oleii* ritifantinn, etc. I will here expressly ivtuat k that the usual method of placing tho apparatus in water, or-merely rinsing it out with a stream of water, is in no way suftl cient. Some dealers sell a suitable little wire brush with the bottle, but even this does not answer the l>ur psoe, for the apparatus is not clean by a tone wav atTcer drawing the brush-lUfougll it siiTOral times; and yhioitfilpake file trouble ttfelean it so tlfofmighlV oitfht to ten times a day? How much time it would re quire! Another disadvantage is that the bottle was air-tight and a partial vacuarn is formed which ren ders sucking so difficult as|co exhaust the Child, mid it stops before its hun ger is satistied. Hence, parents, ye who are compelled to feed young children with a bottle, throw away this upiiartus, whk-li can only bring instruction upon yonr children, and either select a bottle with a glass mouth-piece, which is filled from lie low, or take a largo rubber mouth piece, which is perforated by a small hole and can be drawn directly over tlie neck oi the glass bottle. The large mouth-piece or nipple can read ily be turned inside out and thor oughly cleaned and rubbed wtih dry salt. i.EO\ 111. C. I.HVI, Jr., Attorney na Iniinselliir at Uw. Commissioner of IN.
