The total debt is $3,800,000,000, on
which we pay $225,000,000 a year. In
addition to this, the annuul taxation
of $765,000,000 amounts to $l7 for each
man, woman and child, or to SHS for
each man in the country. Tho annual
taxes then, leaving out tho interest
account, amount to 5J por cent, of the
total assessed value of real and per
sonal estates In the United States.
Meanwhile, tho industries of the

Ohio From a Kaillrnl Ntamlpnlnt.
A victory in Ohio, to-day, means
also, a tendency towards order in the
Mouth. Tho hand-writing will be
seen on the wall, by those who were
inflated with the success of last year,
and again, quiet will reign within the
borders of the Southern States,
except in a few distrlcis. These lat
ter will never be purified until the
strong hand is laid on them resolute
ly ,and with tho intention to extermi
nate, if law is not regarded and main
tained.
The above, from the Washington
Chronicle, is a most significant para
graph. As the views of a journalist,
it is not a matter of unusual impor
tance, us a journalist is but an indi
vidual like other men. But us tin
views of a journalist whoso puper is
ono of the chief organs of the Admin
Istration, it foreshadows the inteu
tlons of Gen. Grant toward the South,
if he should bo re-elected. "These
laller will never be purified until the
strong hand is laid on them resolutely,
and unlh the intention to ertermi
nate, if the law is not regarded amt
maintained." These aro hard words,
leading tho mind to reflect upou hard
er facts. Wlmt. the Radicals of the
Grant stripe consider “law” is not
what Bluckstone taught, or the
“Fathers of the Republic" sought to
inauicate. It is very far from the
teachings of Fenn, in whose State ol
Pennsylvania the bitterest essence of
Radical malignity is found. It is not
the construction placed upou it by
Webster, Adams, or even Alexander
Hamilton, and very, very far from
the magnanimous spirit of the words,
“With malice toward none, and char
ity for all, etc,” uttered by Abraham
Lincoln. It is the grasping spirit ol
centralism, tho thirst for inordinate
power, the manacling of the limbs of
a prone Titan who is “overcome but
not conquered.” It is well that the
cloven hoof has been shown thus ear
ly. It is well that the divided De
mocracy will again be united aguinst
the wrongs of this corrupt Adminis
tration. The currency question is
not settled, and will never be settled
until tho rights of the massesshall be
regarded. Gen. Toombs well says:
“Tho Bible nowhere tells us to take
cure of the rich, but the Bible every
where tells us to take care of the
poor.” But henceforth the divisions
in the Democracy, in tho West ami
Mouth at least, will cease, and the
great party will reunite its forces in
order to defeat the success of the
Radicals, and overthrow n party
which has si* throttled liherty, and
trodden u|>on the rights of the States
and of the people. To check the
wrongs that characterize the present
Administration, and re assert the de
termination of the people to be true
to the traditions of the Republic, is
tho first and chief mission of the De
mocracy.
The Whole in a Nutshell.—This
is the concise way with which the
New York Sun lays down the Demo
cratic platform. It is brains pueked
Into one sentence:
“Wo expect to see the army reduced
to 10,000 men; the navy converted in
to an arm of defence, Instead of being
as it now is, a nursery of idle pension -
ers and a collection of pleasure
yachts; the Indian appropriations
honestly applied uud reduced one
htilf; subsidies stopped;' contracts
overhauled; jobbery smashed; and
the whole rotten system purged of Its
Impurities. Forty or fifty millions a
year may bo saved, the bulk of which
is now stolon und divided.”
A French gentleman, who supposed
he had mastered the English lan
guage, was sadly puzzled one day
when a friend looked at him and
said, "How do you do?" “Do vat?”
"I mean now do you find yourself?”
"Shire, I never looses myself.” "Bui
how do vou feel?” "Smoot—you just
feel me?’
This reminds us of an English gen
tleman at a dining iu Geneva, Swit
land, desired to say "I would if I
could, but I can’t.” This is how he
did it: “Jo rowtrais si je confd-rais
maisjeona’t )*is pas,” and the pen
mnu only found out that he had
spoken incorrectly by the laughter
which followed his ridiculous attempt
to speak French.
One by one the States are coming
to udopt the same date, or nearly the
same, far holding their Gubernato
rial elections. Among tint results of
the election iu Connecticut, was the
adoption of a O-oustitutioual amend
ment making the state election occur
in November, and extending the term
of ofiee of the Governor to two years.
This will greatly lessen the impor
tance of the elections; for, occurring
hereattcr, as they will, at tue ame
time with those of other and 1 rger
States, tbeir rxditicai significance will
be almost lost.

Tho result of yesterday’s elections

accuracy to show that the Republican
party lias everywhere recovered from
its reverses of last year. Large gains

large gains even iu tho municipal
