Vfj J and <mu-las tm*- I. riulniiit in ('ottwi ami Hinurr. Editor Southern UidtiwUir lilt, year I planted in cotton a few ucres of old Ucld, thut luul not boon tilled in thirty years. Gray pine lund, with a seatterijig sprinkle of sassafras hushes, and subsoil ou putt. of it iu miitull sn?rfd clay.; It wus nut Imrat oft at aft; hut turned oVer shallow with au Allen plough two falls iu succession. The laud wus preimred with a four luoh scooter, and left level; the cotton rows three feet ami a quarter wide, running North and South. The cotton was planted the 14th of May, and well manured in the drill with a cum I Hist of straw and leaves, and a very small quautity of cottou seed, stable and hog-|H‘ti mu .nitre. One hundred and eleven 'pounds of Menyman’s ammoninted dissolved bones to the acre, were scattered in tile drill. As soon us it rained, the cottou grew very rapidly; didn't take time to spread, but shot up like corn stalk, lit July we had a drought, more re markable for its excessive heat and 'constant winds tliau it lack of moist ure ; though the latter was sadly deii cieut. After the drought was over, 1 visited my cotton, and on ull the for ward stalks from bottom to top, I dis covered what seemed to be dean squares even on green-looking plants. Upon close inspection, 1 found them to be young bolls about the size ol the end of my fore-huger. My guano wus put out by a youuu hiullallo by the name of Ike. One corner of my patch joined a neigh bor’s cotton. Several weeks aftet plaining, 1 noticed Unit theeottou oi this corner was twice as large us the balance, and I imagined that I could ainiiisy see u grow. Meeting up with Ike shortly after wards, I inquired. Want's the mallei with that corner? - "O, 1 can ex pinnate to you,” said he; “you knows as now I thinks lots of you, and so I jisl wanted your cotton dure vvilare it jiues the Doctor's to heal him all holler, as 1 knows he’s a great barg any way, so you see when I kum to dat corner where It jiues his I jist I on red down twice us muon gUiaiiiin.” 15ul this comer was des tirttd *" pate tliroogh a liery ordeal, wirfi Is‘jutfibs. of xjerrytiiuu to tiie acre: The tft-ofljfßP with its scorch ing sun and scalding wiuds came on in Julv, and took hold of tliis cornei iu all its glory, and lert scarcely noth ing behind but the .cuVucr; and ii the latter had been made out of gua noed cotton, it would now be •■when the woodbine twiucth." It is non the sorriest, cotton in the field and ir ru tied beyouud ledompiion, Tin guotiu killed the cotton so dead tli i even the barn yard manure and ruin cannot galvanize into spasmodic no tion a solitary muscle! If the hum had been broke quite deep and onl\ lift 1 pounds of guano used to Liu Hers, there would hen good deal more bagging needed in the end. Allovei the crop, wherever the guano fcl, the hea\ lent, the cotton has gone no way of the corner;and every guano de crop of cotton In this section bus gono the way of the corner! A Held close by mine, that was not allotted to taste the dessert, looks healthy aim is loaded with forms and bolls, though the Stalk is stlli.il. Last year f planted the same kind of land; failed to get any guano; used weak barn-yard manure. Cot ton grew very slowly for u long time ; was, unpromising ; but it kei t uutk ing progress slowly, and linallv at tabled the usual size; became loade > down with bolls, and kept green till frost; und ultimately made the best cotton that I have ever made.—- Jas. The alarming increase of the use of this most pernicious drug as a stimulant, by ftlaie aud fe male, aud its peculiar effects, completely destroy ing the digestive apparatus aud shattering the nervous system, effeminating and debasing the mind, renders The Cordial Balm of Syricum and Tonic Pills of inestimable valne, as it completely destroys all desire for this most baneful drug, and restores , the nerves to a perfectly healthy state, even in cases where opium lias been used in large quanti ties and for a number of years. [Davenport Democrat, Daveuport, lowa.j How few people are found without some indi cations of nervous disease. This truth has been recognized ever since classic ages, when a sound mind in a sound body was held as the perfection of human existence. Home from congenial dia ase, others from youthful indiscretions, some from sicoholic indulgence or too free use of to bacco, suffer from tremor, palpitation of nervous excitement—all of which can be removed and per manently cured by ths English Remedy, the Cor dial Balm of Byricum, which has long been in the old country the favorite remedy, aud which, since its Introduction into this country, has dis tanced all other medicines having the same ob ject in view.
