JOHN KEAOAN DEAI.
Mr. Feagaii’H death has bwjn expected
for some time. For nearly two years he
has been in bad health. Since May ilant it
has been evident that the f*ll destroyer,
consumption, had laid his relentless Imnd
upon honest John Feagan. He died yes
terday morning about 2 o'clock. His age
was thirty-eight years. He came to this
country about twenty years ago from
Ireland, and for sixteen years has been
living in Columbus. During the war he
fought gallantly for his adopted land. He
was a member of Company K, 4dth Geor
gia Regiment, commanded by Col. P. H-
Colquitt. He lias lawn on the police force
about six years. He leaves a wife and
two children to mourn his loss. A good
soldier, a good citizen, a faithful police
man, an honest man is gone.
His remains will be borne from tho
Catholic church, of which he was a worthy
member, this morning at 10 o'clock.
A HhS Death by Hurnlßg.
Again we are called upon to chronicle
the death of an estimable lady in our
midst. Yesterday afternoon Miss Sarah
Appleyard, a daughter of Mr. John Apple
yard, wits, with her sister, engaged in
making soap in the back-yard of her
father's premises. About 3 o'clock the
younger sister left Miss Surah alone at
the soap-boiliug. In a few minutes after,
a near neighbor, Mr. Reeves, was called
by his wife to hurry into Mr. A.’s yard, as
someone was screaming. Upon going
to the door, Mr. R. discovered a heart
rending sight. Miss Sarah Appleyard was
LYING IN THE FUUfi,
her clothing burning rapidly, and she was
unconscious! It is supposed that as soon
as her drens caught lire, she became so
badly frightened that she fainted aud fell
iu the lire, inhaling the tlaiuo.
It was the work of an instant to throw
a ixMl-quilt upon the form of Miss Apple
yard, and drawing her out, to extinguish
the flames. Alas! it was too late. After
excruciating agony, lusting for several
hours, the unfortunate young iady expired
at 7 o'clock p. m. Hhe was twenty-eight
years of age.
Petly lr**y.
The crime of petty larceny is fearfully j
on the increase, and unless the hundreds !
of Idle ones are forced to work, tho pro- |
duoer will be robbed of em*ything he
maktw. It is almost next to an iiupossi- :
bility to raise anything iu this immediate
neighborhood. If you have a tine hog or
calf, the first thiag you know is that they
fail to come up—and your hog or calf is i
lost. It is the little things that are pil
fered from you that keeps you worried
almost to death, and in constant dread
that everything you have will gradually
go luider the dutch of the thief.
No remedy yet provided has proven ad
equate to the task of preventing stealing,
and none will ever be; but we think tho
vagrant laws might !>*• made more strin
gent, and tho convict ion of offenders ren
dered more certain. If anything can per
fect the law against stealing, we believe
tho above will 6omo as ne?ir, if not nearer,
toward accomplishing it tiiau any other.
Let us have rigid vagrant laws and speedy
convictions.

OOLUMULN GROWING.
B<veral wetiks ago a gentleman visited
Columbus on a prospecting tour, with a
view to locating a hugging factory. Af
ter looking over the city, and calculating
its importance us a manufactur ng centre,
he lelt highly phased with Columbus aud
her people. From a gentleman here who
lias heard from him, we l**arn he will in
i few days Im here with his machinery

work. Another gentleman has Just left
here, after surveying the outlook with
the intention of locating a broom factory.
He says his attention was directed to Co
lumbus by repeated extracts regarding
Columbus published iu Northern journ
als, and clipped from the Tiues. He w<s j
highly pleased, and we tn t he will find
it to his inUsrest to locate among us.
With the certain addition of the hug
ging factory, and the prospect of the
iroom factory, mav not i tie merchants of
Columbus feel encouraged for ihe future.
We have an abiding faith in the great fu
ture of Columbus and hope to see j ohr
hopes fully realized.
Our W• rehu*••,
Columbus has as elegant and commodi-1
ous warehouses as cun be found in the'
.South, and they do all in their power to
help the fanners. In a recent issue of the
Times we remarked ou the reduced prices
of handling cotton that were iu operutiou
iu Eufaula. We published it iu our paper,
not with a view to advertising Eufaula, or
in any way iujuring the business of our
warehouses, but solely to keep them post
hJ, that they might know what other peo
ple were doing, and could better shape
their business arrangements to meet the
urgency of the cafe. The merchants aud
factors of Eufaula are doing their level
U*st to control the river trade, and are
even bad enough to eome into our legiti
mate territory and solicit trade. It be
hooves nil interested to note the strides
Unit are being taken to direct the trade
from Columbus.

glory of Its freshly painted fronts, tempt

stream of uulmated Isiauty, nttrueted by
this lovely weather, much to the delight
of smiling clerks, aud reductive of despair

Klitors Daily Time* I have been'fAiked
so many questions about Florida, by so
many parties since iby return home, that
I will take this method of answering them,
if ymi will allow me a small space in your
columns.
The country around Ricoe’s Bluff (the
polist wliere wo were at) is very low and
fiat, and, as one of the natives describes it,
seems tote a thin crust of laud floating
on water, os the slightest rain will cause
all the low lands to be submerged in wa
ter. The soil is a light sandy one, aud
well adapted to the cultivation of <cotton,
[>ea*, potatoes, cane, Ac. In fact, I never
naw finer cane or potatoes anywhere, and
! the cotton will compare favorably with
I any you can find on the boat Georgia plan
tations. Bice is also cultivated on the
swamp lands with great suwtsh, and veg
etables. as fine as you will see anywhere,
can te had at least one month earlier than
we got the same In Columbus*; but the
chief production, and one that now seems
to be al>sorbing the entire interest of the
resident planter, is oranges. Every house ,
you pass Is surrounded by orange trees, |
. and in many places you will see large
orange groves with the trees loaded down
I with fruit which is ripening just at this!
time. PerhaffS one of the moat beoutltu) j
nights a parson can look at is one of these j
large orange groves at this season, the |
dark groc of tho trees affording a splen-1
dto contrast to the bright yellow of the
partially ripe fruit; snd 1 believe it is uni
versally considered that the orange is the
most beautiful of all trees.
Lemons, bananas, and other tropical
fruits also thrive well tn this section of
country, and in the future will undoubted
ly prove a source of great revenue to those
who are eugoged in their culture.
One advantage which the farmer in this
section has over those who areengagi and in
the business farther north is. that the ear
liest front seldom comes sooner than De
cember or January, and even then but very
light, and all vegetation has a much lon- i
ger time to come to maturity, and, of
course, arrives at much greater perfec
tion.
Ah a stock raising country, Florida
equals or oven surpasses Texas, the wit ©
grass affording splendid pasturage, while
young and teuder, and the thousand ot her
varieties of grass, hertmge, and cane an
swering well for fail and winter food. Mr.
W. H. Neil, on whose place we were camp
ed, estimated the number of his stK*k at
20,000 to 30,000 head, and he then gave only
the lowest estimate, as his neighbors put
the number much larger. Other parties
In the neighborhood are also raising cat
tle with equal success.
Game and fish, of all varieties, are
very plentiful ami a person thinks noth- j
ing of going uut at any time for killing a
bear or deer, or for catching 50 to 100 lbs
ef fish during the day. Turkeys, ducks,
aud other small game also atxnuid In
great numbers, and afford splendid sport
to hunting parties during the winter
months.
Iticue's Bluff is situated on the Appa
lac’iicola River, about half way between
Oiatlah *oehie and Appalachicola, Flori
da -that Is, 61 miles from each. The
country, along the river is unhealthy,'
b it back from the river, on the pine lands
It is reported quite healthy and free from
chills or any disease produced by malaria.
It is very thinly settled except a line ex- j
tending up aud down the river about a
mile back, which is well settled up, or at
le-ist the houses are only about one mile
apart ; from that line it is a perfect unin
habited wilderness for 40 miles or more
back into the interior of low pine forests j
and impenetrable swamps and ty-ty |
thickets, which abound in all kind of I
game, snakes, alligators, Ac.
Uncleared lands in this county, (Liberty) j
sell at one dollar and twenty-five rente
per acre, but they are extremely hard to
clear, b wing to the interhieiNl roots of the
cabbage paJraeto, which penetrates deep
in the soil and baa to be grabbed up tie
ore the land is fit for use. Clean! lands
are hard to get, at any price and are hold
at from twenty to twenty-five dollars per
acre. On the opposite id the river in Cal
houn county lands can be had from the
Government at sixteen dollars for i)0
acree, and they are equally as good as
those in Liberty county, but it Is said to
be more unhealthy than on this side of
the river.
Columbus is tho only place at which the
people of thie section of the country will
f rode; they also send all their products
here, and if the country is settled up and
developed as rapidly as the people here
think it will be, their trade in time will be
a groat source or revenue to our city—if
wo can only manage to krep it. Savan
nah, Macon and Eufaula are all striving
for it, aud bid fair to distance Columbus
iu the race unless she exerts herself.
Before closing ~h order to show the
profits of orange culture—l will state that
from one tree alone sllO worth of oranges
were soli; besides, the family had enough
to eat from off the name tree during the
season. This is vouched for by at least
twenty of t!*o roost respectable people in
Liberty county.
I may write you again in reference to
Florida, giving many points more in de- j
tail ; also giving a description of dpaap j
life iu Florida, ami of hunting bear and
deer through cypress swampe and tie-tie
thickets, and the incidents connected ?here

an organ. JLs it a bund organ, shajiod like
a club!
“What are you doing there; why don’t
you go to work?” asked a father of his
son. "I'm like Micawbcr," replied the
youth, ‘‘waiting for something to turn
up.” The boy was placed across the pa
ternal knee, and received the usual mild
admonition. He believe* now that some
thing has turned up in a double sense,
entirely different from what he expected.
It is about time that some self sacri

“Will you do It?” she said, twisting one
end of the strap around her hand and
fetching hini a “stinger” across the
shoulders with the other. He squirmed
and looked frantically at the keyhole of
the door, as if he oould crawl through It ]
“Will you do It?” she said, aiming two or
three at the calves of ins legs, while he
skipped around likes great Northwestern
grasshopper with the jim-jams. “Will
you do it?” she repeated, concentrating her
energies for a terific swoop, and doling
him a blinder over the eyebrows that
made the cold perspiratiou start out of
every pore io his body. *1 will” he roared in

HEARTY BLOOMING WIDOW.
Marietta. Ga., March 9, 1870.
Messrs. BmdJlelH A (to..
Gentlemen—You will please ship us an
other supply of your invaluable Female
Regulator, and forward bill by mail. We
are happy to state that this remedy gives
better satisfaction than any article wc
sell. We have been selling it since 1868,
amt witnessed m&uy remarkable cures b>
it. Among othtire. there was a iady
friend of ours who was sallow and sickly
until she was twenty-six years old, when
she was married. Her husband lived two
years and died. She continued in had
health; in fact, she has never been what
a woman ought to be. A few months
after the death of her husband she saw
your advertisement, and came to our
store and bought a bottle of your Regula

rections. It has cured her sound and
well, brought tier regular monthly peri
ods on, ami to-day she is a hearty, bloom
ing widow—with the use of but two bot
tles of your Regulator, ousting her only
three dollars, when she had tried several
physicians and spent a great deal of
money without any benefit. Wishing you
great success with your valuable reme
