Iron Intrrrat of the Hnuili. There hna been tt steady develop ment In this industry since the war, and the (Treat mineral State of the South. Alabama, now freely boasts of belntr the chief seat in the Southern States of the manufacture of hot blast charcoal Iron, her furnaces be ing situated on the Selma, Dalton & Borne Bond, from which point ship ments to England have been made and sold at £7 to f s t>er ton. Speci mens from other mines, which have been sent forward, are classed by the prominent English manufacturers as ''Best Best” while the highest grade of iron is only ‘‘Best Beat Best.” This iron trade'is furnishing steady employment to many hundred native whites and blacks, and a good many English, Scotch and Swedes, who are building up the South, increasing the mining of hard coat, and using annu ally millions of bushels of charcoal burnt in the forests near the mines. Charcoal costing 6to 7e. and coke u to 100., the South must furnish a very considerable part of the J.uoo.ikki tons of iron made in ‘he United States. This is indicated by the number of furnaces now in blast, and projected, in South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee ami Alabama. [Charleston Courier. ■■■ ■ ♦ A citizen of South Carolina has token the pains to ascertain from the census reports of 1860 and 1870 how many white people, natives of the Northern States, were living in the South in those years respectively. He finds, rather unexpectedly, that fewer of such persons by more than 10,000 were living in the South in 1870 than in 1860. The Slates in which the number of non-natives has materially increased are: Arkansas, where the increase is about 45 per cent., or from 11,000 to 15,000; Florida, which has gained in about the same proportion, or from 1,000 to ‘1,900; Kentucky, where the advance Is from 11,000 to 49,01 K); and Tennessee, which had 18,000 Northern people in 1870 against 12,000 in 1860. The decline in num bers of natives of Northern States is greatest in Virginia, which had 36,0ne such residents in 1860, but only 13,000 In 1870. The State of Louisiana, where the decline in numbers of resi dents from Northern States was from 14,000 to 10,000, and Texas, whieh had lost about 2,000 of such citizens, having had 21,000 in 1860. but only 18,000 in 1870. In the other Southern States thechange was slight. On the other hand, the number of persons of Southern birth living in the North increased between 1860 and 1870 more than 56,000. The increase was great est in Kansas. Nebraska, Illinois, Minnesota, lorfX and Oregon, amt the numbers declined most sensibly in Ohio and Indiana. In the other States there was no very noticeable change.—Wall Street Review JOHN BLACKIAR rfON-BOARD Insurance Agency, Gunby’s Building, St. Clair St. American, of Philadelphia. EstabUsb-d 1810.
