S. census of 1870. gives tbe number of sheep in Georgia, as 419,- 485. According to the returns of the Tax Receivers, collected under the auspices of this Department, the number now in the State is 819,- 323. This shows a decrease from 1860 to 1870 of 93.153, and from 1870 to 1875, of 100,142 sheep in the Slate, or a decrease; hi fifteen years, of 193,295, or a 38 per cent, decrease during a pe ri's) in which tiiere suould have been 100 per cent. Increase. These are startling facts wliich demand the careful cooaldcra ti<m of tho statesman and legislator. Indiana. 1875, 2,408,- 6.37; 1874 , 3,869,878 Illinois. 1875. 2, 809.989; 1874, 3,455,591. The State Auditor of Indiana, Hon. E. Hender son, states that the returns were very imperfect, many counties failing to make a report. In reply to our en quiry whether such counties were represented in the aggregate given, the State Auditor advises us that the counties failing to report are put down at the same number as the .pre vious year.
