THE TIMEB: SKUOIY MORN 1 NO, OCTOBER 24, 1875, rttOM HAMILTON. Hamilton, llaukib County, Ga., i October 23,1875. f Editors Times: Although I write from this place, whero I am now sojourning, you know rno for an old citizen of Colum bus, and one keenly alive to anything touching her fate and prosperity. When the North A South Railroad was llrst projected, I was opposed to the city's taking stock in it- -believing, and contend ing, that railroads, like other enterprises, should depend upon private capital. I would be still opposed to the city, as a corporation, donating money for its exten sion ; still I am firmly convinced that Co lumbus is largely interested in the com pletion of the road to the point over the Pino Mountain, called “Chipley,” if no farther. When 'he road reach** that far, it will tap a region that will contribute, at least, from 8,000 to 10,000 more bah* of cotton yearly to our town, and consequent trade. A careful estimate, I understand, has been made, which proves that the de sirable object can bo reached, at a cash expenditure of about $55,000. This small sum arises from the fact that the road is nearly, and completely, graded to the point mentioned. Surely, then, a successful effort should be made by interested citi zens to secure to Columbus the benefits at hand. The Pine Mountain is a barrier which must be overcome, before a large trade can reach you which now goes else where. This trade originally sought Co lumbus, notwithstanding the Mountain's ruggedness, and continued until more in viting Helds were opened. You will have it again, when you can offer anything like equal facilities of transportation. Let your people move without sluggish ness to attain an object so desirable. Cot ton Is now being hurried to market almost as first as it Is ginned and packed. This arises from the necessity of the farmers to meet their obligations, and not from their satisfaction at the price. The crop In this county is very largely below the average. *** TUP. GREAT SHOW. HOWES’ GREAT LONDON CIRCUS AND MENAGERIE. fFroro the Memphis AvsUnrhe.) Never, except on the celebration of Mur al Gras, has our city witnessed such a gathering of people as that which assem bled on the streets yesterday to witness the advent of Howes’ Great London Cir cus and Menagerie. Long before the hour appointed for the appearance of the grand cavalcade peoplo began to assem ble on tho principal streets, along the pro posed lino of march, and when the first notes of the band, which headed the pro cession, were heard, every available space which could afford a good veiw was occupied. Windows, balconies, awnings and sidewalks were crammed with people eager to see the street display, about the magnificence of which so much had been said. That they were not disappointed was manifested by the exclamations of surprise and admiration that greeted tho living panorama at every point. Unques tionably it was more beautiful than any similar street entertainment ever offered US our people, and was but the foretaste of tho Inimitable performance that was seen later under the canvas. The caval cade was many squares in length, and was composed of cavaliers, knights and ladies on horseback, Roman chariots, drawn by horses four abreast, a cage full of African hyenas, among which fearless ly sat the negro keeper, Iroquis Indians, dressed in their fantastic costumes* pain ted, and carrying implements of Indian warfare, the fivo performing elephants and a camel, a number of wagons on which were beautifully painted allegori cal pictures, and containing the wild ani mals belonging to Sanger’s English Men agerie. The striking features of the dis play were two magnificent chariots, drawn by richly caparisoned horses. These chariots were handsomely painted and gilded, and displayed on the sides u number of mirrors, which, as they moved along, multiplied and reflected the gorge ous pageantry, producing a pleasant ef fect on the beholders. To attempt a min ute description of the display would be almost an endless task, as each feature of it presented something entirely new and far eclipsing any circus display ever made in the South. It is not often that a journalist is called upon to record a more distressing acci dent than befell Miss Fannie Arthur, the devoted step daughter of old man Tom Butler, who is tho bridge keeper on the Southwestern Railroad at Flint River bridge. From Conductor Dense, we learn she was run over by a pole car at the end of the bridge. She saw the car coming, and ran backwards across the track, in chikl-ltkegh*?, as she bad often done. The car ran over her. killing her instantly, and throwing the car from tho track, seri ously injuring two negroes on it.
