*...>:• 111 HIUMIKV n UKURKI.I. ■ ili|Nirt :,nt to Fnr.-.. r unll l-ofi.lnfur. BY THE COMMISSIONER OP AOMCTLTCRE (Coutiuued.) We will supposo this area to bi pluutoU In cotton, anil that wlthou the sheep inunure it would protlnei one half of a halo of cotton per aero The iiii'ieutw on that urea would b 12,772 bales of cotton, worth, at iO uoL [a*r bale, $6118,600. Xf there were 2,000,000 sheep ii Georgia, as then' would be if prop erly protected, the increased predic tion from the effects of their uiunuiv at the above rates, would be wort I t4iUUO,OOO per annum, or one half tin amount of the Stale debt. It is hoped and believed that tin Legislature will, at its next session adopt such measures as will lemuv. the present obstacles to this inns, important enterprise. If t his is doue thousands of farm ors in Georgia will immediately cm hark in sheep husbandry, and mil lions of acres of land now idle and at expense to their owners will be ren deled protltuble as sheep walks, am gradually improved in fertility. I' will open the Way for a tide of immi gration into Georgia of thousands ol the tiest, most quiet, peaceable, in dustrions and prolltable laborers wh • nearly double their number an nually, ouou a laborer is the sheep, the best and cheapest in the world. Is it not remarkable that such la borers cannot lie down to rest at night in a civilized community with out risking their lives at the hands (or rather, the mouths of their id I* and lawless neighbors, the dogs, who spend the day in idleness or sloop, and the night in murder and theft? The small farmer, who would keep only from ti ft y to one hundred sheep, cannot thus safely invest his money unless his farm is si arranged that his flock can be kept near his house and securely penned ut night. This necessity generally prevents the utilization of his best pasture lands and greatly increases the ex pense of keeping sheep. It is therefore the small farmers, constituting the great mass of the agriculturalists of Georgia, who suf fer from the neglect of our law-mak ers t - afford the necessary protection to mis most profitable branch ol their legitimate business. The ilrst question then for his consideration is. as to the requisite pasturage or range. If this is abundant, he must considerwell if with his surroundings, the probable loss by dogs and steal ing will leave a margin for profit. Ii his sheen ean be protected from rogues, both quadrupl'd awl bijx’il, without too much cramping the pas turage or increasing the expense, u handsome profit is assured. The keeper of as many as tno or suo sheen is independent of dogs and rogues since he ean afford to employ a herds man to accompany the flock, and not only protect them, but economize by herding them on uncultivated land that could not be otherwise utilized. • -e • Taking tin 1 link. The oilier day a colored resident of Vicksburg found a bottle of whis key in the suburbs of the city, and habiug a pedestrian, lie inquired : “Dat’s whiskey, ain’t it .-' “Smells like it, and 1 guess it is.” was the reply. “And dere ain’t no pizen in it?” “ Well, there may be ! can't iell: I shoulden’t want to drink it.” "If dere was pizen I’de be a dead nigger, eh?” "And if dere wasn’t Tiny pizen Ida be wasting a pint of good whiskey?” “Yes.” The tinder turned the bottle ovci and over, smelled of the contents three or four times, and Anally made readv to drink, saying: "Cere’s heaps of pizen lyin’nround loose, but dere’s also heaps oh nig gers in Vicksburg, an Ize gwine to tip up de bottle an’ run de chance!” —Vieksburg Herald.
