From Mr. Randall, on "sheep hus- 1
buudry in the South,” wo Rot some
idea of the progress of wool growing;
in Australis and Vuu Pieman s Land.|
He says: “In 18K' the export of wool
from Australia and Van Diemen's
I-and was 167 pounds; In 1833 it hail !
reached 3.516,860 pouuds. In 1813 It 1
amounted to 16,336,400 pounds." In !
1848 it had increased to 30,1)34,567
imunds. Iu 1871 the cron of Austra
lia, Tasmania and New /-calami was
168,785.993 pounds. Tltero is no tea-1
son why, with proper protection,
Georßia may not show a proportion- 1
ate increase in the next decade.
The effects of warm climates ami
their porreenlul herbage upon wool,
bear a marked analogy to those of
warm climates upon vegetation, glv
inß increased vißor of Rrowth, length,
uniformity ami streiißth of fibre, and
consequently Rreater weight to the
wool.
Consider in tills connection the
difference in the cost of keeping
sheep in warm and cold climates,
and we find that wartn climates have
decidedly the advantage.
rOn this subject correspondents j
shall speak from their experience.
Mr. David Ayers, of Camilla,!
Mitchell county, in Southwestern
Georgia, when' snow Sever falls ami i
the ground seldom freezes, and
where the original pine forest is car
peted with native grass, says his
sheen—3,s<io in number—cost him an
ti ually.Awto'" cents tier head, clip
threi• pounds of unwashed wool,
which sells at thirty cents per pound,
giving a clear profit of ninety percent,
on the money ami labor invested in !
sheep. Lands suited to sheep mis-,
ing can tie purchased in this section !
of the State for from 51.50 to Sin per
acre according to location. Mr.
Ayers does not feed his sheep at any!
time during the year, neither has he j
introduced the improved breeds, I
using only what is known ns the na- i
tive shsep.
Mr. Ayers complains of the rava- 1
ges of dogs on the sheep, and of hogs i
and eagles on lambs.
Mr. John McDowell, of Washing
ton county, Pennsylvania, keeps 650
highly improved sheep, which coat
annually, $1.54 per nead t,o keep
them. Realms tonmke his wool clip
clear, which averages 4 lbs. of brock
washed wool tier sheep, and Hold this
year at fifty-ri.r cents per lb., or $3.‘24 j
for each sheep sheared ; tint the last I
crop cost, oil account of the severe ;
wiuter, fifteen cents per lb., which i
makes his net income per sheep,
$1.60. His sheep arc worth $3.50 pet
head, and his net profits are forty-elr
per cent, on the capital invested in
them.
The land on which Mr. McDowell
I mat tires his sheep is worth about 111-!
ty dollars per acre, or fully ten times
the value of that on which Mr. Ayer’s
flock feed.
In other words, Mr McDowell, in
the fine forming regions of Pennsyl
vania, must invest, supposing that In
keeps two sheep to the acre ami Mr. j
Ayers one, five times as much In I
land as Mr. Avers, to make one-half
the profit on the money invested in
sheep.
It will thus appear, that where
sheep-husbandry Is made as|wclaltv.
Southern Georgia has a decided ad
vantage over Pennsylvania.
.
Wapnlron s Trratmrnt of His Crnernls.
He was born a king, if to command
the obedience of rnen be the whole
art of king-ship, which may perharps
be doubted. He seems In general to
have acted on the plan of Frederick
the Great; that is, ho demanded
nothing butsuocoss from his lieuten
ants, and was careless of the means
they took to obtain it. Only failure
he would pever forgive. It was a hi
vorite saying of his that he never
judged men but by results. It was
to no purpose that Massemi gave ex
cellent reasons for his defeat by
Wellington; Napoleon wanted vic
tories, ami not explanations. There
is a foolish story to which so em
inent a man as Southey could give
credence, to the effect that- Admiral
Villenenve was assassinated by order
of the Em|>eror after his disgrace at
Trafalgar. There can bo no serious
doubt that the unfortunate commun
dor eommited suicide in sheer terror
at the idea of an interview with the
stern master whose plans he had
caused to miscarry.
It is fair to add that those of the
captains who were successful had no
need to complain that their services
were insufficiently appreciated.
Even Massena had acquired an in
come of $lOO,OOO, while hlsstur was in
tiie ascendant. Si Hilt hud $60.0011;
Davoust $180,000; while Borthier,
Prince of Neuchatel, enjoyed a
princely revenue of some $270,000.
"They will no longer tight,” Najsile
on once exelaimed in ft moment of
dejection, referring to his generals,
•*T have made them too rich.
It may be nuniiected that it wan
ruther from luotires of policy than of
gratitude that Napoleon thus created
the f-irtunes of hiH marshals in a day.
He was anxious to establish as u sup
port. to his throne a powerful aristoc
racy which in splendor and (to ilo
him justice; iu the brilliancy of its
achievements should rival the old
nobility of France. He forgot, how
ever, that though monarchy and de
ruooracv can exist and have existed
without prescription, an aristocracy
to bo venerable must absolutely bear
the seal of antiquity. In none of tils
projects bud Cron-well failed more
helplessly than In his attempt to re
construct the House of Lords in Eng
land. Napoleon, ip is true, did not
propose "to confer legislative func
tions on fiia nobles as such; never
theless he Intended them to be a priv
ileged class, and this alone was a
more courageous than wise idea on
the morrow of 1789. -The Galaxy.
