Tii? nestrwMon at Llakon. A writer iu Lipt-incott’s gives tlie following ilesc-rii-tiiin of the ilestrihi tion of Liebou: The morning of No vember 1 dawned serene, but tl;o heaVeti* were hazv; situ-e midnight the thermometer bail risen one de gree, lleiiumir. As it was the feast of '•all saints,” the churches were thronged from an early hour, and all their altars brilliantly illuminated with thousands of tupers. and deco rated with trurlauds of various timed muslins nud thin silks. At a quarter of ten o’clock the tlrst shock was felt. It was so slight that many attributed it to the passage of heavy wagons in the street, uini even to mere fancy. Three minutes afterward a second shock occurred, so violent that it seemed as if the heavens and earth were passing awuv. This agitation lasted fully ten minutes, and ere it diminished the greater |irtioii of the city was in ruins. The dust, rusted obseured the sun ; an Egyptian dark ness prevailed, and to add to t lie uni versal.horror the fearful sereams of the living and the groans of the dying rose through the air. In t wenty minutes all was calm again, and people began to look around them and consider the best means of escape. Some were for go ing to the hills, hut were soon dis couraged from so doing tiv rumors that those who had already gone thither were suffocating from the effects of the dense fog of dust which stilt rose from the falling buildings. Then they rushed toward the quays, which line a part of the Tagus, but only to learn tlie horrible news that these had sunk Into the earth, with all the people and edifices upon them. Those who thought to put out to sea were told to look at the river, and lot in its centre they beheld a whirlpool which was sucking in till the vessels ami boats in its vicinity, and not a fragment of them ever be ing seen again. The royal palace had been entirely swallowed up. and over the site is now the vast square of the Paco, or Black Horse, ; oue of the largest public places in Europe. The great library of the holy ghost was in flames, and its priceless Moorish anil Hebrew manuscripts fast becoming ashes. The opera house hud fallen in, the inquisition was no more, and the great church of San Domingo was but a heap of stones beneath wliich lay crushed to atoms the entire congregation. The Irish church ofSt. Paul was the death-place of one thousand persons, and tlie palace of Betnposta. where Catharine of Btuguiizu, widow of Charles 11., lived and died, had fall en over from the heights on which it was built, and uttetlv destroyed the poor blit populous part of the town which lay beneath tt. In <• word, where bat an hour since was Lisbon was now nothing but desolation. As to the people, who can describe their condition? At lent 7u,otK) persons had perished, and the majority of the survivors were cruel lv wounded and in agony of mind and body. Some went mail with fright, some lost for ever the power of speech ; sinners went.about confessing their secret crimes, and fanatics, believing the last day had come, cried out to the horror stricken multitude to "repent, for that, Christ was coming to judge the quick and dead.” Ki nturk nn. Ui'ttinx vtsiri-tetl In tint - ana. "Stoii that bout,” was the cry on tlie Louisville waff at 10 o’clock Thursday night, hut the cry came too lute, fur the ferryboat had cut loose from iter fastenings and was steaming proudly up the river, fully a hundred feet front the Kentucky allure. Tlie cry came from two tueit who bud hotly chased a young man and his sweetheart from a buck couutv in the State to the river and there lost titem by tieing about two minutes too late, for they were safe itt the boat sitting side by side each other in a carriage. The horses putted and the lovers sighed and congratulated themselves on their escape from the datk and bloody ground and their cruel parents. When the boat landed at our whart tlie horses were given the reins, the whip applied, and oIT dashed the bridal party for Charleston, tlie county seat. 'The pursuers were too close to tarry at Jeffersonville. A brisk, rapid drive of an hour and fifteen minutes brought them to Charlestown. County Clerk Ingram was aroused trotn pleasant dreams and the marriage license obtained. Next Elder Howe was awakened train his slumbers, and in less time than it takes to tell it Mr. Okana Owens was the true and lawful husband of Miss L. Jessie Perrettt. After spend ing ,-t pleasant hour the newly 'mar ried pair left Charlestown, returned though Jeffers tinvi lie slower titan they went up, notch less disturbed iu mind, and as Imppy as a newly elevated country squire. How those Kentucky lovers do laugh tit lock smiths. Jeffersonville Ledger. Advertising for a Wife. — A Mel bourne widower, with something of a family and a goodly bank ace..unt, advertised for a wife over a fictitious signature. Several answers were n-- reived. among which was one that particularly pleased him. The chi rographs was delicate and graceful, the language chaste, aud the signa ture. like his own, fictitious. After a brief and mutually agreeable corres pondence, a time and place were fixed upon fora meeting. At the hour no poiuted the gentleman was. waiting in u private parlor at u certain fash ionable hotel, and shortly after ward lady entered, thickly veiled. Kite came in trembling, and did not venture to look up until Un voice of the gentlemen, ill respect fill greeting fell upon her ear, at which site started convulsively, raised her eves to the face of her swuin, she tiieu uttered a surpressed cry—a cry, the tone of which struck upon the gentleman’s ear with a sound not unfamiliar. He lifted the veil and looked uiion the seared face of 1 1 is own daughter, whom lie had sup posed industriously pursuing her studies in a town some distance west wari from Melvourne. The voting lady hits since been installed as housekeeper in the paternal man sion, and Iter papa is not likely to advertise for a wife again, until his daughter is married. It.
