Last night, Just as every honest man was eeeking tho repose of his couch, the room of Mr. James H. Blanchard was in vaded by a host of friends, who insisted upon caning him. Overpowered, ho was forced to submit to th dictates of the as sembled friends. A popular member of the Legislature, in an elegant address, presented tho cane in behalf of his suffer ing friends, Messrs. W. If. Thomas, Clar ence Knowles and Charles Nash. It seems they were provoked to tho assault by rea son of Mr. B’s propensity for borrowing overy man’s cane he chanced to moet, and forgetting to return it. They especially had been sufferers at his hand. In order to rid thorn selves of this inconvenience, they conceived the Idea of a cane presentation. Mr. Blanchard is a host wiicn he strikes a fellow that wants to buy a bill of has, but last night demonstrated the fact that he was an eloquent speaker, as shown in his beautiful response. It was a happy occasion, andwillbe long remembered by the entire party as a bright oasis In the Journey of life. Ail Industrial Mchool fur Women Mrs. Westmoreland, of Atlanta, is writing for the Atlanta Herald a series of very interesting articles on the above sub ject. She treats It with a master hand, and seems thoroughly In earnest in nn en deavor to create such an institution in At lanta. There never was u more urgent cause than the one that proposes work for tho hundreds of deserving women of this land, for aside from all other reasons, viewed from a political point, no country or community can ever truly to prosper ous where almost one-half of its popula tion is shut out by false pride from earn ing a living. Tho subject might, bo treat ed at length, and a strong argument made In favor of its morality. What Mrs. West moreland proposes to do in Atlanta can to accomplished In every city. All wo have to do is to lirst lay aside all false ideas of pride, and recognize the filet that to labor is honorable. How many more happy fe males would there be If the women who want to work could procure suitable situ ations. There is many a struggling hus band and father, and many nn orphan girl and widow who stand In need of help, in order to sustain themselves. When a man, towed down by adversity, has a large family of girls to support, It would to a privilege to tho girls to do their part in helping. Mrs. Westmoreland proposes to have a building or set of rooms where these ladies may congregate to receive whatever work thill has been left for them to do. Who ever had it in charge could secure such work as they could do in the way of copy ing, embroidering, sewing, Ac. The to ginning would be small, Iml us soon as those people who are able to iiave such work done found out they could thus aid an honorable undertaking, they would regularly leave t.lieir work there to to done. We hope she may succeed, and thus demonstrate the feasibility of her under taking. •I uni Ice's Court.
